To ask what you think is a reasonable price to pay for a bed?

DM and DF have just ordered a new bed which cost £6000 I was rather shocked as I'd be hard pressed to spend that on a car
They offered me their old mattress which is still in ok condition I looked it up to see if it was suitable for use on my pine frame bed and sadly it's not - however that was £1500 at current price
This isn't about what they spend their money on that is up to them (although they are not that well off) but about is it really worth it?
I sleep ok on a memory foam mattress which cost me around £200 at the time and would still cost me less than £300 if I needed to replace it in the near future

Apparently previous mattress not suitable for a solid or slatted base as base itself needs to be sprung
Whereas my bed is pine frame so would be too uncomfortable and wouldn't last very long

I got given my superking silentnight divan bed 10 years ago by someone who bought it, decided it was too big for their room but had spilled a cup of tea on the mattress so didn't want to sell it. I think it was around the £1000 mark then. She donated it to a furniture charity and i just happened to be the lucky recipient, had just moved into a council house from furnished private so had very little. 10 years and the mattress is still amazing. If it feels a bit funny, i just turn it over and around and it's like a brand new mattress. If i ever have to buy a new bed, i'll get this one again. Everyone who has ever slept in it lives it. My mum spent 2 years trying to persuade me to swap with her. I love my bed deeply.

Whathaveilost · 18/04/2016 22:22

While we are talking about bes and mattress, those that are saying how fabulous their beds are can you recommend me a king size. I have a decentbitofmineyti spend. I just want a really comfortable bed for me and DH. He is a lot larger than me.

Op, hope you dont mind the hijack.

Whathaveilost · 18/04/2016 22:23

Op! Why not buy yourself a new base unit and hen you can use the mattress?

peggyundercrackers · 18/04/2016 22:24

If they can afford it why not spend their money the way they want to? all that matter is they like it and think it's worth it.

JaceLancs · 18/04/2016 22:28

I did think about that but my bed matches rest of my furniture and also has drawers underneath
Sprung divans tend not to and I don't like the way they look
It's also a bit too soft for me
I have asked around a few friends as don't want it to go to waste if not local charity will benefit instead

4k for ours, LOVE it. It was dh's 40 th birthday present 😁

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 18/04/2016 22:32

And yes, definitely worth it.

Tartsamazeballs · 18/04/2016 22:36

£200 for a bed frame and £280 for a mattress from IKEA. Mattress has a 25 year guarantee (although I don't know which dirty scummers are keeping their mattresses that long!).

Went round bensons, next and furniture villiage, our favourite mattress was a £2000 mammoth brand mattress, and bed was around £1500 on top. No way!

IKEA FTW!

UterusUterusGhali · 18/04/2016 22:38

Apparently you needn't spend on the frame but the mattress is v important.

I an very lucky that I was given a brand new v expensive mattress by my neighbours after they ordered one and two were delivered. (The company didn't take it back after months.)
It was literally life-changing.
I'll never buy a cheap mattress again.

What someone spends on their bed is subjective.

AvaLeStrange · 18/04/2016 22:40

We ordered our new bed last week £2500 including the headboard and 2 x iGel pillows.

Tbf I would have been happy enough with something cheaper, but DH & I have very different tastes so we were just pleased to find something that we both love - it's so comfy in comparison to ours. It's also the first completely new bed we've ever had after 20 years together. Our current bed is absolutely clapped out and we've been waiting over a year to order this one as we had to pay off something else (we've done it on interest free credit).

As an added bonus its also made in the UK Smile.

GreenMarkerPen · 18/04/2016 22:42

the german 'which' has tested matresses and bases recently and the result was that a flat hard surface for the matress is best. i.e. slats are great as they also allow for ventilation below.

About £3k. If we keep it for 10 years (which we did with the last one) it'll be about £1 a night.

It's a lot but our kids are terrible sleepers and so the time I do get to spend in bed I want to be as good as possible.

UptownFunk00 · 18/04/2016 22:47

Like hobby we got a new one for 1k and we thought we'd spent a lot.

newmumwithquestions · 18/04/2016 22:52

Bed - 350ish from ikea. Mattress - 900 reduced from 1800. Nice and firm.

I didn't think about the problem of getting a new firm mattress just before getting pregnant. Was not very comfortable on the hips then! Now I love it again 😊. Am lying here very comfortably.

twirlypoo · 18/04/2016 23:00

My mattress was £80 from ikea about 10 years ago, and it said on it that it was for occasional use. I am replacing it this summer and I can't wait!

sw15mum · 18/04/2016 23:11

OP- we're using an expensive mattress that was originally on a Divan bed on a slatted bed now- Tis fine.

SistersOfPercy · 18/04/2016 23:26

I had this conversation with dh at the weekend when he gave me a £300 budget for a new mattress. I spend half my life in it, I have hms, scoliosis and fibromyalgia and I need comfort.
A poor nights sleep doth a miserable Percy make.

Anyway, eventually we ordered one at £550 which I'm happy with. If I had the cash I'd have gone for the £2k one in there every day of the week and you'd need to prize me out to go to work Grin

A good pair of shoes and a good bed, my nana would say. If you're not in one you're in the other!

janetmoore · 19/04/2016 00:11

I spent £300 for a double bed.

FuckSanta · 19/04/2016 00:13

Our superking storage bed was £2k without the headboard. I had it made with a deeper base and opted for the hardest mattress they had.

ephemeralfairy · 19/04/2016 00:20

Mine was free from a friend who was moving house! I forced her boyfriend and my flatmate to carry the solid frame through the streets of Camberwell and Brixton. We followed with the mattress on our heads. That was in 2009, it has survived two moves and DP and I are still very comfortable in it.

pinkcan · 19/04/2016 00:23

Where are you getting these snazzy mattresses from. I have an old ikea cheapy but would like to upgrade to a really good one.

BackforGood · 19/04/2016 00:37

Wow! I was going to say £2 - £3 HUNDRED.... not even thousand Grin

I mean, I know you spend a lot of your life in bed, but that is a colossal amount of money for something you can buy for such a fraction of the price.

OrangeFluff · 19/04/2016 00:49

We got a new bed a few months ago. We thought we'd spent a lot, but after reading this thread, maybe not! The frame was about £300 from Ikea, and the mattress was £800 from Dreams, although it was in the half price sale so worth £1600. After 8 years on a cheap Argos bed, it feels amazing!
