Putting on your bra behind your back!

skislope · 13/04/2016 19:13

I remember reading a thead (or three) a while back that divided opinion about how people put their bras on. It was pretty much 50/50 that some fastened them behind their backs and some fastened them under boob then twisted round. I am in the latter camp and it did puzzle me how it's possible to do up your bra behind your back... Blush
However, I was at an aerobics class a few days ago, and the instructor asked us all to link our own hands behind our backs and connect them (if that makes sense!) which I couldn't do - neither could a lot of people (I noted as I was stood at the back observing!). We were all people of differing statures and weights (so not a 'long arm' issue) - so I wondered if the world's back bra fasteners are the same people that can connect their hands behind their backs?!

Yes, AA only really makes sense as a measurement if you're using the add four inches method.

leedy · 14/04/2016 16:50

"I think if you can twist it round it can't fit you properly as the band is supposed to be quite tight."

Nope, I can twist around bras that are pretty firm or even too tight once they're properly on. As I said upthread, I twist them well below the bit of my back where they eventually sit, which is quite a bit wider.

ELaunch · 14/04/2016 17:11

I have always fastened my bra at the back. I just can't work out which way to fasten it at the front so that it is the right way up after twisting it round!!

Having said that, I have a bra fitting business and I am amazed by the number of women who put their bras on by fastening at the front and twisting. To me, it looks complicated, must hurt if the rubs whilst twisting it and I'm sure it isn't good for the bra to be pulled like that either!

BadlyWrittenPoem · 14/04/2016 18:44

I front fasten as it's never occurred to me to do it differently. My current bra is starting to feel a bit tight on band size (due to pregnancy) and it hasn't taken me skin off yet. If I'm taking my bra off with clothes on I'll undo it at the back but otherwise I twist it to take off. I'm sure if I chose to I could become just as good at doing it the other way but see no reason to change. :)

Ilovetorrentialrain · 14/04/2016 18:56

I'm late to this thread and confused! Sorry I know it's moved on but...

For those who are front fasteners do you do so at waist level? I do. I put my bra on round my waist with the clasp near my belly button then twist round and pull up. How can this drag the skin?

Would love to be a back fastener. It just looks better (and I take my bra off from the back) but I've never changed how I put my bra on since I was about 12!

I'm even more perplexed now having realised there are two different ways to measure, traditional and modern and bra companies apply sizes inconsistently. It's no wonder measurements different from shop to shop.

Pastamancer · 14/04/2016 19:58

The traditional method only applies to bras with no stretch so should not be used any more. It is outdated but unfortunately still being used by the high street to put people in illfitting bras.

ProcrastinatorGeneral · 14/04/2016 20:16

Morbidly obese back fastener here. Can't do it the other way, it hurts.

I've lost four stone recently. Was gutted to find my boobs aren't shrinking very much. Lumpy fuckers need to be gone!

Hotcrossbunsandcheese · 14/04/2016 21:18

I have to do at the front and twist as a result of a frozen shoulder

Hotcrossbunsandcheese · 14/04/2016 21:22

Amelia Blue the best bra fitting I have ever had was by sight - Rigby & Peller

WhiskyTangoAlphaFoxtrot · 14/04/2016 21:26

Always behind my back, my mind boggles at even the though of trying to do it front - seri spiky, I would have no view there either, cos of the boobs!

WhiskyTangoAlphaFoxtrot · 14/04/2016 21:26

*seriously

HostaFireandIce · 14/04/2016 21:31

I'm actually quite shaken to realise that people I thought I knew might actually be fastening their bras at the front and then twisting them round! This thread has been an eye-opener.

Ilovetorrentialrain · 14/04/2016 21:56

Hosta 😀

Ilovetorrentialrain · 14/04/2016 21:58

I wonder if there is a divide in terms of boob size. Mine are pretty tiny, certainly not a lot to lean forward and scoop into a bra. Pulling my bra up my body and hoping it actually stops at my boobs instead of flying past them is my method! If I had bigger ones who knows.

Orwellschild · 14/04/2016 22:03

Honestly thought everyone in the world was a back fastener. Love that they're not. Excellent thread :)

LucyBabs · 14/04/2016 22:11

Not sure if it's been mentioned..
I was a front fastener when I was a b cup (before I had dc)

I'm now a DD cup and I'm a back fastener also three dress sizes bigger sob

2rebecca · 14/04/2016 22:22

I've always done mine up behind my back. I find it easy. It's adjusting bra straps that is difficult, all bra straps should have the adjustable bit at the front, especially for sports bras where shoulder straps slipping down can be a pain.

I can only fasten my bra at the back but can't do the joining hand thing!

Ideally back fastening is best as it puts less stress on the bra. Swivelling is ok if you really must but the 'flipping' method mentioned up thread by Idstillratherbeknitting is really bad for bending the bra wires out of shape and should be avoided at all costs.
Fastening the bra before putting it on?! How could that possibly begin to fit properly?!

musicposy · 15/04/2016 07:51

Wow, interesting thread!

I always do up at the front and swivel round. I'm a 32D which isn't actually that big - I have boobs but am slim so the D isn't very big on a small band.

I can't clasp my hands behind my back - in fact the very tips of my fingers only just touch. I can't do back zips up or undo them either as there's a huge bit of my back I can't reach - I always have to get DH or one of the DDs to zip it up for me.

I thought this was normal but now I realise I'm a person with very stunted arms or a freakishly large back Grin

Does anyone wear a front-fastening bra these days? You know, with a little hook & look between the boobs? Haven't seen one for years used to confuse the hell out of boys at parties Grin

PestilentialCat · 15/04/2016 08:48

*hook & loop

staceyjanegriffiths · 15/04/2016 08:58

I do the back fastening thing, and I'm really not flexible or slim, I've just always done it that way! U just find the hook and eyes, never had a problem! I've noticed quite a few ladies do the front and swivel, but I've never bothered trying myself! Whatever more comfy 4 u quite frankly - I don't think it matters!
