Putting on your bra behind your back!

skislope · 13/04/2016 19:13

I remember reading a thead (or three) a while back that divided opinion about how people put their bras on. It was pretty much 50/50 that some fastened them behind their backs and some fastened them under boob then twisted round. I am in the latter camp and it did puzzle me how it's possible to do up your bra behind your back... Blush
However, I was at an aerobics class a few days ago, and the instructor asked us all to link our own hands behind our backs and connect them (if that makes sense!) which I couldn't do - neither could a lot of people (I noted as I was stood at the back observing!). We were all people of differing statures and weights (so not a 'long arm' issue) - so I wondered if the world's back bra fasteners are the same people that can connect their hands behind their backs?!

Fish on, I fasten them by feel.

Alexa444 · 13/04/2016 19:26

I can do it behind my back if its two hooks but three forget it.

WhoKnowsWhereTheT1meGoes · 13/04/2016 19:28

Front and swivel here, it's much easier for me because that's what I've always done. No problem clasping hands behind back either, I can grasp opposite wrists at brastrap height easily.

WhoKnowsWhereTheT1meGoes · 13/04/2016 19:28

Never had any skin rub off either.

sonjadog · 13/04/2016 19:28

I also backfasten. I am really not very flexible at all but still manage it. I've always done it that way. You get to know how the hooks work by feel so it isn't any problem that you can't see. I can do it instantly too, so no time wasted. I have done the front way a couple of times when I hurt my shoulder, but I didn't like the feeling of pulling it round and I felt the whole time that it wasn't sitting quite right.

paxillin · 13/04/2016 19:29

I can connect my hands behind my back. I am also a back fastener. Front fastening is just...wrong.

AFuckOfFlora · 13/04/2016 19:30

I'm astounded.

For nigh on 20 years I have always fastened the bra before I put it on, then put it over my head and wriggle my arms through, like I would put on a sweater/ vest.

Shock

just me then?

AdoraBell · 13/04/2016 19:32

I can link my hands behind my back, even get the palms together completely if I'm up to date with Pilates, but I cannot do my bra up behind my back. Never could. DD does and always has from day one. She thinks I'm weird.

paxillin · 13/04/2016 19:32

I know someone even weirder, AFuckOfFlora. She steps into them and pulls them up, then arms through.

Trills · 13/04/2016 19:34

I can also put on earrings without looking.

skislope · 13/04/2016 19:34

I have to say from observation and also further interrogation that clasping hands at the back is no way normal (or abnormal I must add!) - Just wish I'd asked about bra fastening too! C'mon front fasteners - no need to be shy, well obviously we are shy!

Are you small of boob then, Flora? I don't think I would be able to do that. The band wouldn't go over mine on the way down.

Dutchess61 · 13/04/2016 19:35

Back fastener. I have big boobies so I lean over ease them in, stand straight then stretch the back down and fasten. (was taught how to do this by a professional bra putter onner)

honeyroar · 13/04/2016 19:35

I'm a twister too, although I can easily reach behind. I just find it easier. I'm wondering what kind of bras people wear that would hurt skin if twisted round!

I once went for a proper fitting at a posh bra shop and the owner told me off for twisting. She said it makes the structure of the bra warp.

OddSocksHighHeels · 13/04/2016 19:36

Flora don't you get stuck? The bit where my bra sits under my boobs isn't as wide as my shoulders, that doesn't sound easy. I'm so tempted to take my bra off and try it now.

allegretto · 13/04/2016 19:36

I can link my hands but I can't do up my bra!

insancerre · 13/04/2016 19:39

I fasten mine behind my back
I had no idea there was any other way

WhoKnowsWhereTheT1meGoes · 13/04/2016 19:41

I can do other things without looking (French plait my hair, earrings in, contact lenses in and out without a mirror) so I don't think it's that. When I've tried back fastening either my boobs fall out, the straps get in the way or it all ends up in the wrong place/tickling me. No such problem with twisting, pop it round ribcage, fasten, twist, first strap up and scoop boob in cup, second strap up and scoop, job done.

DoughNut12345 · 13/04/2016 19:41

I fasten at front and twist round. Which reminds me.....why is it sooooo difficult (impossible actually) to get front fastening bras? Only seen those pointy cup, thick-strapped things for older ladies with front fasteners. My two clothing holy grails are front fastening bras and LONG sleeved cotton nighties (that also aren't for old ladies....you can get plenty of those) Hmm

AugustaFinkNottle · 13/04/2016 19:42

Front fastener here, and I've never rubbed or scratched my skin moving it round.

MargotLovedTom · 13/04/2016 19:45

Indrid - how is it quicker and easier to wrap the band round you; fasten the hooks; twist the band round; get one arm in the armhole and pull up the strap; get the other arm in and pull up the strap; adjust boobs? - when you could just put both arms in the armholes; fasten it at the back and adjust boobs?

FattyNinjaOwl · 13/04/2016 19:45

I'm a back fastener. I find it quicker and easier. I've tried twisting but it's too much faff.

AliceScarlett · 13/04/2016 19:45

I wish I was a back fastener. Oh woe is me.

TrashPanda · 13/04/2016 19:46

I'm a back fastener, always have been. If you can swivel it round, put it on like a top or pull it up over your hips, it's almost certainly too big in the band. All the support should come from the band so it should be secure.

Terramirabilis · 13/04/2016 19:47

There are that many people who can't do up their bras behind their backs? Truly Shock! I knew some people fastened at the front because of finger issues but I didn't realise it was a not-being-able-to-reach thing.

I have just tried and I can not just get my hands to meet in the middle but can actually cross my arms behind my back and get my hands to emerge round the front on the wrong side (if you see what I mean). It is amazing how different we all are.

Although I do have long arms and hands so that probably helps.
