Putting on your bra behind your back!

skislope · 13/04/2016 19:13

I remember reading a thead (or three) a while back that divided opinion about how people put their bras on. It was pretty much 50/50 that some fastened them behind their backs and some fastened them under boob then twisted round. I am in the latter camp and it did puzzle me how it's possible to do up your bra behind your back... Blush
However, I was at an aerobics class a few days ago, and the instructor asked us all to link our own hands behind our backs and connect them (if that makes sense!) which I couldn't do - neither could a lot of people (I noted as I was stood at the back observing!). We were all people of differing statures and weights (so not a 'long arm' issue) - so I wondered if the world's back bra fasteners are the same people that can connect their hands behind their backs?!

Have never done front and twist. And yes, I can do the yoga thing.

grapejuicerocks · 13/04/2016 21:11

I've never been good at doing zips up at the back.
I can't do the arm thing.

I am a front fastener but my mum was and I didn't realise there was another way when I first started wearing a bra. Perhaps my mother is short of arms too.

grapejuicerocks · 13/04/2016 21:12

To take off I grab band with thumb, pull down a bit and undo. I couldn't undo without pulling down.

grapejuicerocks · 13/04/2016 21:15

I do it up around my waist. swivel then pull up. It would be too tight to do that directly under my boobs.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 13/04/2016 21:19

Back fastener always. Big boobs, so big bras with underwires, would be too uncomfortable to fasten at front and twist round.

WhoKnowsWhereTheT1meGoes · 13/04/2016 21:21

When I try back fastening, I put my arms in, but then the cups tickle my boobs and as fast as I put one boob in the other pops out, then the straps fall down, all before I have even reached round to the fastenings. It just doesn't work as well for me as front and swivel (and my bras do fit properly, according to both Bravissimmo and the MN bra intervention method they are the right size).

Redderred · 13/04/2016 21:24

I always do it up behind.
If it's loose enough to move it round it's not the right size!

CarefullyAirbrushedPotato · 13/04/2016 21:27

I can only barely do the hand Clasp behind the back thing and am definitely a back fastener. This thread is blowing my mind, really. How do you drop your boobs into the cup if you don't, erm, drop your boobs into the cup?
I can't imagine how on earth I'd manage otherwise, dragging my bra around my chest would skin me, and I'd have to loosen both straps to get my arms in. There is no way I could do a bra up around my waist, it is not smaller than my ribcage. And putting a bra on over head like a t-shirt? The mind Boggles! How can that possibly be a good fit? There is simply no way I could get my shoulders through my fastened bra, it'd be like trying to climb through the head hole of my t-shirt Confused

CarefullyAirbrushedPotato · 13/04/2016 21:34

I am shocked that nobody else does this.
Please try it and see if it really is that bad

Flora I wish I could take a photo, I really do. I assure you it's totally impossible. I can't believe I even tried, DH and the kids are ShockConfused

candykane25 · 13/04/2016 21:35

Front twister here. If you can't twist it without scratching your ribs then the band is too tight.
Shoulder blades don't come into it as the straps are down.
I remember seeing Eyes Wide Shut and Nicole Kidman did the back fasten and I thought how exotic
I have a generous bosom so I need to fasten, twist, then scoop.

candykane25 · 13/04/2016 21:42

Oh and to take off, I pull straps through my outer garment arm holes, one arm at a time, then reach up at back to unfasten hooks and then yank up through my neck hole.
I always take my bra off before my clothes, cos it comes off as soon as I get home. So does my watch.
I like to be unencumbered at home :)

ExtraBlessings · 13/04/2016 22:51

Front fastener. But I take it off at the back.

Like candykane, back fastening seems sophisticated to me. I might have a go in the morning.

Rainatnight · 14/04/2016 07:17

Did everyone think about this thread when you were putting on your bra this morning? Grin

KatharinaRosalie · 14/04/2016 07:20

As said previously here, a bra should be so tight that you could not pull it more than an inch away from your body. A bra that does not stretch more than an inch clearly can't also easily swivel around.
If the bra is so uncomfortable you can't wait to take it off, chances are that it also does not fit properly.

toffee1000 · 14/04/2016 07:27

I'm a front fastener. But my mum reckons I do it in a weird way. For some reason, I put my bra on backwards, like my boobs are protruding out of my back, then slip my arms out, do the twist and pull the straps back up. I've always done it like that, which my mum finds odd. Mum is also front fastener. Also don't get the "twisting it round would skin me" thing. What the hell is the bottom bit on your bra made of, tiny spikes??
Does it really matter, though, how we put it on? Grin

ouryve · 14/04/2016 07:30

I can't do it up behind my back despite being hypermobile. Something always goes click in not s good way long before the hooks get anywhere near each other.

Ameliablue · 14/04/2016 07:32

Rainatnight yes I noticed my left hand is more dextrous when working behind my back than my right.

It also occurs to me for those who fasten at waist, presumably that wouldn't work when pregnant?

allowlsthinkalot · 14/04/2016 07:40

Front fastener. I can't pull my bra band more than an inch away from my body but it still swivels round no problem.

I can remember my Gran trying to give me a back fastening lesson and telling me to lean forward into my bra in a weird way! I've never managed back fastening though.

nooka · 14/04/2016 07:43

I only really wear a sports bra which is super stretchy and goes on like a t-shirt. I hate bras generally, as I find the strap much too tight across my rib cage. The MN intervention approach seemed to me likely to result in an even tighter fit too. Only an inch give surely doesn't leave much space for breathing? I find after about half an hour of wearing a bra I just want to take it off. My dd tells me that I should just get used to the feeling (sympathy of teenagers huh).

Last time we bought my dd's bras they had more front opening ones than back fittings (dd doesn't like the feel on the clasp between her breasts so wasn't happy about this). They were all fashion bras though.

StarlingMurmuration · 14/04/2016 07:45

I'm a back fastener. I can also do the reverse praying thing, and fold my arms behind my back, but I can't do the over-the-shoulder thing. I always unfasten my bra with one hand, how else do people do it?!

PageStillNotFound404 · 14/04/2016 07:52

I'm hypermobile and can clasp my elbows behind my back but am a front fastener. Mainly because my hypermobility is part of EDS and I have poor fine motor skills (can take me fricking ages to fasten a necklace) so easier if I can see what I'm doing.

Unfasten it behind my back though - less precision needed for taking off than putting on.

mmgirish · 14/04/2016 08:38

What! I thought that only people on tv back fastened their bras! I am a front fastnener...obviously

TheDowagerCuntess · 14/04/2016 08:51

I'm a back fastener.

I just tried to clasp my hands behind my back and I can't fathom how someone might not be able to. I can fold my arms behind my back, and clasp my elbows - let alone hands - comfortably.

candykane25 · 14/04/2016 10:08

I tried the back fasten this morning.

It's not for me,

dimots · 14/04/2016 10:19

I can't back fasten. But then I can't even touch hands doing the yoga thing shown, much less clasp them... I also can't do up zips at the back or scratch my own shoulder blades! I end up rubbing my back on the wall like a bear! I do have very short arms for my height. Swivelling the bra is not an issue as I swivel round my waist, which is smaller than my ribcage.
