Putting on your bra behind your back!

skislope · 13/04/2016 19:13

I remember reading a thead (or three) a while back that divided opinion about how people put their bras on. It was pretty much 50/50 that some fastened them behind their backs and some fastened them under boob then twisted round. I am in the latter camp and it did puzzle me how it's possible to do up your bra behind your back... Blush
However, I was at an aerobics class a few days ago, and the instructor asked us all to link our own hands behind our backs and connect them (if that makes sense!) which I couldn't do - neither could a lot of people (I noted as I was stood at the back observing!). We were all people of differing statures and weights (so not a 'long arm' issue) - so I wondered if the world's back bra fasteners are the same people that can connect their hands behind their backs?!

Flora - where are you getting measured though? A lot of places add inches to the measurement, giving you too big a band.

Pastamancer · 13/04/2016 20:17

Flora where do you get measured?

emwithme · 13/04/2016 20:18

I can put suncream on my whole back (hypermobile shoulders) but I still fasten my bra at the front. It's how my mum (and gran) did it so that's how I do it. I've tried doing it the back-fastening way but either a shoulder clunks out of place or I just get all flummoxed. I wear a 36F (and it fits properly; it's quite difficult to twist round me, I have to do a weird breathing out and rib-minimizing move) so usually 3 rows of hooks which is far harder than two rows.

AFuckOfFlora · 13/04/2016 20:18

Sn0t I don't take it off that way, funnily enough, I unhook it around the back!

Voldy always in Debenhams, as I take my teen dd there for regular measures as well (although I don't necessarily buy from there). I'm always comfortable though.

Pastamancer · 13/04/2016 20:20

Debenhams are very hit and miss with their fitting. How far away from your body can you pull the band on your bra? It should be a max of 1"

I've never swivelled it back round to take off though..does anyone do that?

HermioneWeasley · 13/04/2016 20:21

Back fastener here

I remember seeing a woman at the gym do it up at the front and swivel and was boggled. I mentioned to a friend who it turns out was a front fastener and was amazed I could it it up behind my back. It was a revelation

I used to be able to undo a partner's bra single handed in my young and "virile" days!

AFuckOfFlora · 13/04/2016 20:26

pasta not far at all, certainly not an inch. All my bras are very comfortable, no wires poking into armpits or overspill...I must admit I have never even wondered how anyone else puts on their bra, I am shocked that nobody else does this.

Please try it and see if it really is that bad Grin

FloppyRagdoll · 13/04/2016 20:26

Back fastener here, and neither slim nor particularly fit. I can do the hand clasp thing over my right shoulder, but no longer over my left shoulder, due to an old injury. I was stunned and felt like a Bad Mother, though, when I recently discovered that both of my DDs (now 21 and 23) are front fasteners. That was not how I brought my DDs up at all, at all.

Pastamancer · 13/04/2016 20:27

If you can't pull it out as far as an inch, how are you getting it over your boobs? Can you put the bra on backwards and try pulling it out as that will stop the cups from altering things

KatharinaRosalie · 13/04/2016 20:33

yeah same question - I just tried to pull my bra off without unfastening, not a chance. It doesn't go over the boobs - if it did, won't it just lift up every time you raise your arms?

AFuckOfFlora · 13/04/2016 20:33

They just stretch ...! Bra that is, not boobs. I've never done it any other way Confused

MrsKoala · 13/04/2016 20:35

You can't link your hands behind your back? Shock i must be a mutant, i can fold my arms behind my back!

I clearly am as If i do the back hand clasp thing i can grip hold of both wrists over both shoulders.

KatharinaRosalie · 13/04/2016 20:36

you just said it doesn't stretch more than an inch? If you have a tape measure, check your under bust measurement, tight. And then your bra size.

Pastamancer · 13/04/2016 20:36

What top size do you wear and what bra size if you don't mind saying on here? Debenhams get it wrong more often than they get it right

scarednoob · 13/04/2016 20:36

Front and twist here. I have stupid enormous boobs so have a million hooks to line up.

However I think my mum showed me how to do it and she was a tiny A or B cup so I don't think it is a size issue!

CheshireChat · 13/04/2016 20:41

I can do my own sunscreen as well and I can link both hands like in the picture and I do it at the back, it sounds really complicated otherwise. Also I like my bras to be very snug and preferably with that sticky band to prevent it from moving about.

proudmom135 · 13/04/2016 20:42

Hi Skilpope,

I used to fasten my bra from behind. At first, I was having the same issue as you wherein I can't do it but later on, I learned.

AFuckOfFlora · 13/04/2016 20:43

At the moment I am a size 14, and a 36 D, last measured in Sept last year.

BestIsWest · 13/04/2016 20:45

I can fold my arms behind my back too.

Just asked DD (also hypermobile) and she is a front fastener though.

FankEweVeryMuch · 13/04/2016 20:46

I used to do the front gmtsen twist because that is what my mum did. I now fasten at the back because I find that easy. I take it off using one hand to unfasten which I think is pretty slick.

My shoulders are narrow, not sure if this helps? I can do prayer hands behind my back in yoga and stuff.

newmumwithquestions · 13/04/2016 20:52

So I'm now intrigued... do all you front fasteners twist to take off as well?

hollinhurst84 · 13/04/2016 20:53

I fasten behind back. Grab bra so thumb is on middle hook and the catch is held by other thumb. Fasten middle hook first then the end ones
Can't do that link hands thing though but I can zip a dress up. Mostly. Let's not discuss the time the taxi driver had to help

Pastamancer · 13/04/2016 20:55

That does sound like you are in the wrong size. Do you have a tape measure that you could measure yourself with? I am happy for you to pm me if you want and I can help you sort out a size. Chances are your daughter is also in the wrong size
