...to not wear pantyliners often?

This just occurred to me (for absolutely no reason other than being bored in the loo)...do people actually wear them all the time? I only wear them for the tail-end of my period, and then go without until the next one. Is that normal, or am I gross?

Douching, like so many tacky American phenomenona, is a Southern thing.

mathanxiety · 14/04/2016 04:25

Another who has US experience here, and my OB/Gyn gave me a lecture on how douching is completely unnecessary. I stopped him in mid-rant to assure him I never used them. It most definitely is a Southern thing, and people whose culture is southern in the US buy them, so they are stocked in the frozen north and all over.

No liners here either.

Giggorata · 14/04/2016 09:22

Threads like this are so reassuring that the apparent eccentricities of yer bits are within normal range!
I agree about being able to smell the scented liners from a distance - yuck.
Post menopausal, so haven't used them for a while. Used them for back up during periods & post coital, then discarding later in the day...
(I bet no one used the word coital so much until Sheldon :). )

wherethefuckisthefuckingtuna · 14/04/2016 11:21

I have MS so have continence issues.

Buying Tena light liners at the age of 28 really bothered me.

A couple of years on and I'm over it. Can't go a day without them now. Never had thrush. I feel much cleaner wearing them.

Letustryagain · 14/04/2016 11:39

I used to wear them all the time, heavy discharge started when I was 14, literally the month my period started.

Eventually went to the GP at 17 and nothing wrong, was just the way I was. It got much worse when I went on the pill so definitely hormone related. Strangely since having DD and coming off the pill it seems to have eased a lot. Still there but not so much that I need to wear liners.

Not everyone is the same though so for those saying things like 'why would you need to wear them all the time?', just be grateful that you don't and leave it at that...

ArcheryAnnie · 14/04/2016 11:44

I have never routinely worn them, until recently - I am approaching the menopause, so my cycle is a bit erratic, and it helps not to be caught out. I try to use the smallest ones I can, so as not to constantly be sealing my bits in with a plastic pad, even if it's paper/cotton-covered.

The rest of my life up until now - no, not at all, and really not needed. That's what clean knickers every day are for! I also think my general health and freshness has been helped by not putting a bit of cotton-wrapped plastic up against my bits all day, every day. Plus they aren't cheap.

Some women do need them, but I think many women don't at all, but have just been sold the "freshness" angle, when it is the very opposite of fresh. With knickers, there's a chance for whatever little moisture there is to dry out naturally, but with pantyliners you are trapping the moisture between your bits and a plastic barrier, and it doesn't dry out at all. Blergh.

I can't wait until the menopause is over and I can go back to just wearing clean knickers.

Jacesmum1977 · 14/04/2016 11:48

People wear them more regularly if they are slightly incontinent otherwise when you cough/sneeze/jump etc they might have a little leak.

Housemum · 14/04/2016 11:53

People who don't ever use them, do you not have sex either? Known as drip trays here for the morning after IYSWIM....

LordoftheTits · 14/04/2016 12:35

I have a box in the house but I think I've used two out of the packet in the last year. I've never really needed them.

phoenix1973 · 14/04/2016 12:41

If you don't want to wear them then don't. Don't worry about what everyone else is doing.
I don't use them but had a mate who ALWAYS used them.
I think over a lifetime, I pay enough on sanitary protection so don't want to pay any extra for liners.

iMogster · 14/04/2016 12:41

I only use little panty liners for end of period when really light and if I'm expecting period and don't want to be caught out.
I only use the little tena lady ones when I have a cough or sneezy cold since childbirth, I'm mildly incontinent. The box says 'for those little oops moments!' Really annoying slogan.

PageStillNotFound404 · 14/04/2016 12:50

a) I only use them at the start and end of a period. I've had too many bouts of thrush in the past without using them constantly to want to risk more.
b) I do get discharge-bleach patches on my knickers. Am relieved to know I'm not alone.
c) My fanjo is a bath-water-drinker-then-spitter-outer too.

d) I wear knickers with trousers, occasionally don't bother under skirts in summer.
e) I've been to a southern US state but didn't douche.
f) I've never been to Nandos.
g) I've never been to KFC.

Is that everything?

purplevase · 14/04/2016 13:06

I wear them daily. Not the scented ones though.

kali110 · 14/04/2016 13:09

I wear them nearly every day, and the scented ones and i've never had a problem with thrush either ( except when i'm on a cycle).

angelos02 · 14/04/2016 13:15

Never worn them. 'Pons for when I'm on my period. Rest of the month...nowt.

kali110 · 14/04/2016 13:17

bm clearly some woman do have a need for them, nothing to do with being paranoid... Conpanies saw a gap in the market.

let completely agree with you. Some people use them, some don't, just like some use scented ones some don't! What's the big deal?

Judydreamsofhorses · 14/04/2016 13:23

My period tends to do an on/off trick at the end, so I assume it's finished and then it's like "ha, gotcha!". I use liners those days, and sometimes the day I know it's due on if it's not started first thing.

Diggermum85 · 14/04/2016 13:29

I only wear them if I'm going out and I know I'm going to be laughing a lot!! Smile

PheasantPluckerToADegree · 14/04/2016 15:03

CarsonTheButler - avoid douches at all costs. Such a delicate balance 'up there' which no chemicals will help at all! I use the Natracare pantyliners and tampons after hearing about traces of pesticides being found on other highstreet brands (which would explain the massive recent increase in women's cancers if you ask me). My Gyno said you literally don't even need soap down there as its self cleaning and everything it produces is water soluble, but a little bicarb in your bath water goes a long way as its antibacterial and antifungal but super super mild. Detergent + foof = recipe for thrush/bacterial vaginosis etc etc
After having years of problems with thrush and GBS I consider myself a bit of an expert 'down there' Wink

iluvmykids28 · 14/04/2016 15:36

After having my kids sometimes a couple of drops of wee come out if I cough or sneeze so wear them daily. I never used to wear them when I was younger except at the beginning/end of a period. Never had a problem with them though.

Janey50 · 14/04/2016 16:25

Lol at OddSocksGrin I am assuming that was a typo?! And Fairylea same here. I don't dare go out without one (or even a proper sanitary towel when I have a cold. If I cough or sneeze I am likely to wee myself a lot just a tiny bit.

Curviest · 14/04/2016 16:26

Never bought or used them in my life.
Like Pearlylum, I always wear ankle length skirts or dresses, and never wear knickers unless I am wearing trousers or it's a windy day and my skirt might blow up in the air. I think it's healthier to get a bit of fresh air in dem parts.

Jacesmum1977 · 14/04/2016 16:36

*thumbs up

annandale · 15/04/2016 08:14

Never wear them, get crusty at times but clearly not very much as pants are enough.

I go commando when I've been too disorganized to wash pants, but these days find the chafing is hideous without.

Always thought that some cultures which were anti contraception will develop a douching habit for birth control.

Andcake · 15/04/2016 08:31

Never wore them just thought they were marketing ploy to get women to spend money by telling us what is natural is dirty.
