WIBU to just wash the fucking bear?

DD has a comfort blanket/bear thing
She has slept with it every night since we took her dummy away, around 11/12 months-ish, she sucks on it so now the poor fucker has no legs and is in a right old state

She also refuses to let me wash him
I have done against her wishes a few times and she has literally sat and watched him spin around the washing machine crying until he came out, then not slept properly for around 3/4 nights afterwards
So I gave up and let her crack on
He hasn't been in the wash for a few years now Blush

Now the issue is- He fucking stinks!
Really really stinks! If the heating has been on and you go in her room you can smell him! It's grim

Now DD has recently turned 5, I asked her if I could wash bear so he was fancy for her birthday - she said no so I didn't
Now I'm changing the bedding today, and DD isn't here, would I be a heartless cow if Bear accidentally got tangled up in the bedding and had a wash?
I fear it's a matter of health and safety at this point?

I wonder what mnhq will say about the post suggesting washing in the sink that has been blocked( the post not the sink). maybe mnhq have strong feeling about beats?

Broody1976 · 11/04/2016 20:46

Wash it - I have the same issue with a Kermit the frog who looks like he's got 2 club feet as all the stuffing has gone out of his legs!
DS sits & watches the washing machine too when the frog is in it... He goes mental at me for a while but eventually gets over it.

I was travelling to Australia with my mum when I was 5, just her and three young kids. When we connected through LAX I always remember how the people working there were really nice about my favourite toy elephant who they put in a shoebox to go through the scanner. Anyway it transpires that I dropped him in a corridor and my mum was frantically running up and down the corridor looking for him. The man that found him? Dustin Hoffman. Its my mum's favourite story!

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/04/2016 21:47

I did wonder why the sink post got hidden Hmm

squeak10 · 11/04/2016 22:59

My ds used to take his smelly rabbit in the bath with him occasionally, worked a treat. Ds went to nice clean bed and rabbit slept on the radiator wrapped in a towel next to his bed.

My ds used to occasionally take his smelly rabbit in the bath with him. Ds clean bed, rabbit wrapped in towel on radiator( to keep him warm!) Happy child. You say "not washed him before and he is going in" but previously said "dd cried watching him in wm" confused?? Good luck

scrappydappydoo · 11/04/2016 23:15

DD is 10 and has a bear that has never been washed - I'm too terrified to just in case. She is inconsolable almost to the point of panic attack if he can't be found before bed. She has massive self confidence issues though so if that's what she needs to help then it's fine by me although I would love to wash the bear some day. In the meantime he gets outfits from build a bear that are allowed to be washed so his body doesn't get to manky. Could you try outfits e.g pyjama onesie so the onesie foot is sucked rather than the bear?

Vigbymumparis · 11/04/2016 23:16

Too late for OP, but in case this has made others wake up to the issue: God knows what inspired me, but I told my DD, then aged about 2 1/2, that just like she needed regular baths, so did her cat. So we gave her a bath together one morning in Woolite (it's pink! It smells nice!), with lots of splashing and giggling and could the cat hold her breath under water and ooh, mustn't forget behind the ears, and then sat her on the radiator: dry by bedtime! Result! This particular cat was a house cat that wasn't sucked, so she didn't (and doesn't, 11 years later...) get dirty that quickly, but I reckon even my bloody-minded sprog quite assertive child would have been happy enough doing it sooner.

lottielou7 · 12/04/2016 02:11

You need to wash it every week and then she'll get used to it. There's no way I would tolerate a toy getting into a state just to avoid a crying child.

waitingforsomething · 12/04/2016 05:40

My daughter has a toy donkey that had been loved and dragged around all day every day for 3 years. He is in a state but she adores him. I wash him once a month at least, she cries about it every time but I do it anyway. Just wash it she'll survive.

Blu · 12/04/2016 07:55

Shock at a bear being put on a spin cycle in front of a toddler!

Bears love bubble baths, bears love to go swimming...... Where is your empathy and imagination, people?

The washing machine is not your only solution.

MissTriggs · 12/04/2016 13:05

I agree with Blu, I don't think this is a trivial issue or at all comparable to washing bed linen or clothes.

TheFlyingFauxPas · 12/04/2016 14:02

Lol at Trigger' elephant 😆

Bloody internets been playing up (I hate virgin Angry but that's another thread!)
Anyway DD had 1 very unsettled night, up and down and waking everytime the baby woke up which she's never done before, but that was it now she's back to normal Smile

I think I'm going to invite Bear into our Saturday morning bath from now on to keep ontop of it, I'm actually a bit Hmm at myself for never thinking of this before
And build a bear toys are genius but wouldn't fit our Bear unfortunately

Loving all the stories - particularly Dustin Hoffman Shock amazing claim to fame!

squeak10 not sure if your post was to me, but I didn't say I hadn't washed him before I just said I hadn't for ages a while

glad for bear about the bath.

stealthsquiggle · 12/04/2016 17:48

Bath vs washing machine does slightly depend on the character of the animal in question - some of ours see it as a thrill ride. Others prefer the faster turnaround time of washing machine and dryer vs bath and radiator. Do you really manage to get a bear dry for bedtime following a morning bath?

lottielou7 · 12/04/2016 23:41

The good thing about machine washing is that it's easier to dry afterwards because of the spin cycle. However, there is no way I'd be fannying around with a cuddly toy in the bath since I have neither the time or inclination. I guess I'm just mean, disclaimer I do have 3 kids though and one is disabled. My girls have always been happy about their favourite toy coming out smelling lovely though and were OK with the washing machine. I guess all kids are different.

Lpel · 13/04/2016 10:21

DGS is 8 and still makes a fuss if monkey has a wash. We wash and dry it same day and he has a sulk cos it doesn't smell right but it's a fait accompli.

iluvmykids28 · 16/04/2016 00:16

Wash it. Probably full of bacteria if it smells that bad which won't be good for her health. can't you wash it whilst she is at school or out somewhere?

GreaseIsNotTheWord · 16/04/2016 00:56

Ew.

Just wash the fucking bear!

RJnomore1 · 16/04/2016 01:07

Don't do it. It will smell all wrong and may fall apart. Febreze it.

coffeeisnectar · 16/04/2016 01:37

Dd 2 is 10. When she was 5 my then boyfriends daughter was working in the perfume shop and they were selling limited edition bears so she bought one for dd.

Dd has slept with that bear ever since. She has tons of bears, on her bed, in a huge bucket and on her rocking chair but Ted Peake is her true love bear.(recently name changed from just Ted due to a space obsession).

He is now grey, he has no stuffing in his tummy and is just a small floppy bear but she adores him. She looks horrified if I suggest washing him so he's only Bern washed about 5 times.

I dread Ted getting lost. There's no way I'd find a replacement.
