Butter on croissants (lighthearted)

Boogers · 10/04/2016 14:15

For the last 2 weeks DD has gone to her grandparents' house for breakfast with a pack of croissants which I didn't think anything of; they have jam, they have marmalade, all good with a croissant.

Cue me asking DD how she wanted her croissant this morning, to which she said 'sliced in half with butter on each half, like how grandma and grandad do it'.

WTAF?! Who puts butter on a croissant? It's like smearing Marmite on it! Who, just who, does that?! DD apparently loves it, but she loves butter so I'm in a no-win situation here.

Am I being unreasonable or is DD?

Croissants and hot chocolate doesn't compute for me, croissants are a breakfast food and hot chocolate is for coming in from the cold or a drink before bed, never at breakfast.

Yseulte · 10/04/2016 19:10

Of course you put butter on croissant, otherwise it would be too dry and flaky.

You eat scones and hot cross buns with butter on no? They've got butter in too.

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 10/04/2016 19:22

I have a close relation who went nc with a son's girlfriend when she asked for cheese with her morning croissant Grin

We used to have crispy bacon and brie croissants on Christmas morning. Glorious, but only for one day a year.

FuckSanta · 10/04/2016 19:28

The proportions are completely different. And no, I never put butter on a scone. Just plenty of clotted cream and jam.

WhoKnowsWhereTheT1meGoes · 10/04/2016 19:33

Given a choice I'd have butter rather than clotted cream with jam on a scone.

lonelymum72 · 10/04/2016 19:44

Grew up with butter and jam, but now love marscepone (sp?) cheese with raspberry jam. Good quality jam, or even fresh raspberries. Mmmm. Oh and they have to be warmed through.

serin · 10/04/2016 19:44

I will happily eat any croissant, with or without butter, with or without preserves or Nutella.

I have even put ham, cheese and rocket on them!

WilburIsSomePig · 10/04/2016 19:45

You don't put butter on a croissant?

What madness is this???

MartinaJ · 10/04/2016 19:48

it has to be butter! and strawberry jam!

GrumpyOldBag · 10/04/2016 19:50

About 25 years ago a fantastic deli in Leadenhall Market sold croissant sandwiches.

My favourite was a croissant split in 2 with prosciutto, cheese, and a lettuce leaf to make it healthy. Mmmmmm!

LifeofI · 10/04/2016 19:53

i eat mine plain never tried with jam

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 10/04/2016 19:56

I was a "tear them into sections and put jam on them" kinda girl.

Then one day MIL made us croissants that were sliced in half lengthways, toasted under the grill with proper salted butter on them. It was life-changing. Things have never been the same since the day I was introduced to the Cholesterol Sandwich.

applecatchers36 · 10/04/2016 19:56

Of course I put butter on croissants you can never have enough butter Grin

Pippidoeswhatshewants · 10/04/2016 19:59

Tear, then add butter and Nutella Halo

Unfortunately you can only have croissants every 5 years as the are approx. 7 million calories each. I can't remember the last time I had a croissant, but I am salivating now.

CatchIt · 10/04/2016 20:41

You heathen!! Butter belongs in croissants, Nutella does not, only jam/marmalade.

Good lord, whatever next? Bacon in hot cross buns? Yes sainsburys I'm eye narrowing at you there.

Tequilamockinbird · 10/04/2016 20:45

I thought you were supposed to put butter on croissants ConfusedBlush

Pandora2016 · 10/04/2016 21:04

The correct way to eat them is to stuff them with cooked bacon and cheese before grilling them.

Croissant toasties are amazing.

Another one who tears and butters.

Pipbin · 10/04/2016 21:33

Things have never been the same since the day I was introduced to the Cholesterol Sandwich.

When I was little, before we knew about things like healthy eating and cholesterol, my mother would buy a lardy cake, spilt it, spread it with butter and put it in the Rayburn. It was enough calories for your entire life.

Waitrose still make a lardy cake.

ProseccoPoppy · 10/04/2016 21:45

If you ever make croissants (which, having seen a friend do it I would not recommend) you can see just how much butter goes into them. It's frightening (but delicious Grin). I have to avoid dairy right now and croissants are what I miss the most Sad

pearlylum · 10/04/2016 21:47

Nope sorry, no croissant or butter here. So much fat either way. I enjoy being a size 10 too much.

BreconBeBuggered · 10/04/2016 21:49

What you really need to do with a croissant to make it healthier is to slather it in cream cheese then put pineapple on the top. Fruit, innit.

No butter.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 10/04/2016 21:53

Pipbin Wonder if Scharr will consider making a gluten free version of lardy cake next? I'm eternally grateful to them for GF croissants but damn I need that lardy cake in my life! Grin

Archaea · 10/04/2016 21:53

You croissant non-butterers don't know what you are missing! Also like a croissant with bacon and melted Gouda then one with Nutella for afters
