Butter on croissants (lighthearted)

Boogers · 10/04/2016 14:15

For the last 2 weeks DD has gone to her grandparents' house for breakfast with a pack of croissants which I didn't think anything of; they have jam, they have marmalade, all good with a croissant.

Cue me asking DD how she wanted her croissant this morning, to which she said 'sliced in half with butter on each half, like how grandma and grandad do it'.

WTAF?! Who puts butter on a croissant? It's like smearing Marmite on it! Who, just who, does that?! DD apparently loves it, but she loves butter so I'm in a no-win situation here.

Am I being unreasonable or is DD?

I made croissants the other day and despite there being a pound of butter in them, I add butter, especially if with jam

FishWithABicycle · 10/04/2016 17:58

My parents taught me that the only correct way to eat croissants is to have a knob of butter and a spoonful of jam on your plate, and to tear off (not cut) bite-sized pieces of croissant to be embellished with a tiny dab of butter and a smear of jam then popped entire into the mouth - croissants and cakes should never be bitten.

Mrsbadger77 · 10/04/2016 18:03

You can never have too much butter.

Sparkletastic · 10/04/2016 18:07

Agree with PP who stated that it is all dependent on the quality of said croissant. A fresh flakey delight from a boulangerie = no butter. Crap bready supermarket croissant = butter.

Revolting

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 10/04/2016 18:24

Yep. Depends on croissant. A good croissant is best slightly warm with no butter and apricot compote.

Redderred · 10/04/2016 18:26

Yanbu they're called all butter croissants for a reason

BennyTheBall · 10/04/2016 18:27

I avoid croissants because they're so buttery. The idea of adding butter is anathema.

Rainbunny · 10/04/2016 18:29

This is to awful to contemplate! A freshly baked croissant should be eaten alone, no toppings of any kind. Ever. What Sacrilege!

BennyTheBall · 10/04/2016 18:29

Do we need (lighthearted) on the thread title?

It's about butter and croissants Confused

WhoKnowsWhereTheT1meGoes · 10/04/2016 18:29

I always put butter and marmite on my croissants.

GertyBoo · 10/04/2016 18:34

I warm my croissants in the oven, slice them lengthways, butter both sides and add a scraping of blueberry jam. Heaven! I'm the only butterer in my entire family though.

Muskateersmummy · 10/04/2016 18:34

Warm croissants without butter?! Are you mad?! Always butter and jam on a lovely warm croissant !

CodyKing · 10/04/2016 18:34

Not croissants - but Tea cakes -

What about tea cakes?

Blueberry234 · 10/04/2016 18:38

Cheap supermarket ones need butter and proper ones need nothing but either a slice of cheese or jam

WoTmania · 10/04/2016 18:42

YANBU - no butter (or jam) but plain, possibility warmed, with black coffee or hot chocolate.

SecretNutellaFix · 10/04/2016 18:46

Proper buttery melty croissants are eaten plain with a giant mug of incredibly rich milky hot chocolate.
More basic ones are torn and then have a small dab of butter and a sharp jam applied to the torn end before being eaten. So raspberry, cherry or rhubarb jam.

Crinkle77 · 10/04/2016 18:46

I am with the grandparents. There's already shit loads of butter so what's the harm in a little bit more?

HoppingForward · 10/04/2016 18:50

We have croissants with butter and bacon on Christmas morning!

NewLife4Me · 10/04/2016 18:55

Everyone who I know who eats them butters them.
Unless you want choccy bread then there's no need.

CremeEggThief · 10/04/2016 18:58

Do some of you actually eat your croissants cold?Confused

waceystills · 10/04/2016 19:00

Another butterer here.

Tear a bit off, butter and jam, delicious.

I still remember the very first time I had them, 24 years ago.

Rainbunny · 10/04/2016 19:02

Kipper - I was instantly horrified at the thought of butter and marmite on a croissant...5 minutes later I can't stop thinking about it , it's beginning to sound strangely alluring to me...
