Butter on croissants (lighthearted)

Boogers · 10/04/2016 14:15

For the last 2 weeks DD has gone to her grandparents' house for breakfast with a pack of croissants which I didn't think anything of; they have jam, they have marmalade, all good with a croissant.

Cue me asking DD how she wanted her croissant this morning, to which she said 'sliced in half with butter on each half, like how grandma and grandad do it'.

WTAF?! Who puts butter on a croissant? It's like smearing Marmite on it! Who, just who, does that?! DD apparently loves it, but she loves butter so I'm in a no-win situation here.

Am I being unreasonable or is DD?

I used to request tablespoons of margarine to lick as a playtime treat.

I'm a butterer. Grin

newmumwithquestions · 10/04/2016 14:45

Have you never tried croissant and marmite? It's surprisingly good...

PurpleDaisies · 10/04/2016 14:46

I'm a big fan of croissants and marmite, also croissants with ham and cheese or cheese and mushrooms. I'm much more into savoury pastries than sweet.

Strokethefurrywall · 10/04/2016 14:46

I butter them too - generally don't bother cutting them, just shove the butter in the flat side, occasionally slicing through and smearing some inside too. Then I add apricot jam or orange marmalade...

Desperately want croissants now!

Nicknamegrief · 10/04/2016 14:49

Butter on croissants here too. The real problem is the croissants you get in the UK especially the ones that are made with oil and not butter.

FuckSanta · 10/04/2016 14:49

Nutella on croissants are great and it turns them into pain-au-chocolats.

It really doesn't.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 10/04/2016 14:52

Butter on croissants is the equivalent of eating a lump of lard. Shock Far too much fat for a regular breakfast.

PurpleDaisies · 10/04/2016 14:53

Let's face it ilostit croissants even without butter are hardly health food!

Starstruck2016 · 10/04/2016 14:53

I butter them so YABU!
A long time ago on my honeymoon, I asked for butter for my croissant and was told...' There's butter in them!' This became a standing joke about anything with butter in (?scone)
Am from up North so have some very common habits !

Pinkheart5915 · 10/04/2016 14:54

I put jam on mine no butter.
I often make them myself and they are buttery enough

FuckSanta · 10/04/2016 14:54

Actually, a block of butter is better for you than most breakfast cereals.

bookbook · 10/04/2016 14:56

I put butter on mine ( not that we have them often sadly ) - warmed, tear a bit off, butter on the white bit inside . :)

NancyJoan · 10/04/2016 14:56

I always have butter and jam! Break it into pieces at the joins, iykwim, dab on butter and jam. I eat them about three times a year, am really not worried about the amount of butter!

JasperDamerel · 10/04/2016 14:57

They should be eaten plain but dipped into coffee or hot chocolate.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 10/04/2016 14:59

a block of butter is better for you than most breakfast cereals

Not sure that would catch on as a healthier alternative Grin

FeelingSmurfy · 10/04/2016 15:00

I eat them as they come

Adding butter is like having butter with lemon curd (otherwise known as lemon butter...) I have unfortunately witnessed both

gingerboy1912 · 10/04/2016 15:01

Yabu butter always go on crossiants then jam or cheese etc

BeStrongAndCourageous · 10/04/2016 15:01

Ick, why would you ruin them by putting sticky sweet stuff on them? Butter all the way!

FuckSanta · 10/04/2016 15:03

Not sure that would catch on as a healthier alternative

Might be the antidote to the obesity crisis. (Bloody sugar lobby.)

Notso · 10/04/2016 15:11

Jam, marmalade and Nutella are wrong.
Butter is delicious, on its own is ok if the croissant is decent.

randomone · 10/04/2016 15:12

Got to have butter and jam in. Otherwise I wouldn't bother. If they are not too flakey (drooling a bit now) cut them lengthwise then butter and jam them. If they are quite flakey butter + jam the bottom.

MinecraftyMum · 10/04/2016 15:12

Are you joking? Of course YABU.

Toasted croissants with real salted butter on them. Jam or marmalade is just sullying the already perfect, there's just no need.

RhombusRiley · 10/04/2016 15:13

I butter a croissant and then add jam, or another version I like is tuna and tomato.

Croissant with nutella however does NOT need butter (that would be madness).

Only1scoop · 10/04/2016 15:15

Croissants are pure butter so with added butter and two weeks worth at that I'd be giving her something else....

WhoKnowsWhereTheT1meGoes · 10/04/2016 15:16

Ick to putting sweet stuff on, jam etc and as for Nutella, well that's a good croissant ruined. Soft cheese or butter only. Or on its own.
