I think he must have something wrong with him. Is he a narcissistic psychopath or something like that?

Seriously. What kind of head does this sort of rubbish come from? I simply do not understand his appeal. I feel like I must inhabit a parallel universe or something.

What a tosser. He's not alone in his view unfortunately, I was told that God would punish me for having an abortion and that I'd suffer for all eternity in hell because of it. I didn't go to that church again....

FannyFifer · 01/04/2016 14:12

Only need to look closer to home to see women being punished for abortion.
Ireland carries a jail term of up to 14 years.

MartinaJ · 01/04/2016 14:14

He is a narcissist psychopath. Doesn't give a damn about people, women are only playthings which should have big tits and empty skulls so they don't bore him with their talk while he's shagging them.

Letter in today's Guardian

Why all the outrage about Donald Trump saying women who have illegal abortions should be punished (Report, 31 March)? Here in the UK this has been the situation since 1861 and nothing changed with the passing of the 1967 Abortion Act. All that act did was make some exceptions from the Victorian legislation – many of them about women and doctors filling in the relevant bits of paper correctly. So around a century and a half later, flying in the face of all the advancements in women’s rights and medical technology, a young Durham mother last year was imprisoned for two and a half years for “inducing a miscarriage” using pills bought online. Currently, in Northern Ireland, a mother and her daughter are facing trial that theoretically could result in imprisonment for life for respectively obtaining and taking abortion pills. That is why the British Pregnancy Advisory Service has launched a campaign (“we trust women”) to bring our laws into the 21st century. Meanwhile, those who are castigating Trump for his misogyny should remember, as my grandmother would have said, that people who live in glass houses should not throw stones.

The more worrying thing for the rest of the world, imo, is that the Democrats don't have a stronger candidate which means whichever mad republican stands is likely to win. I can't see how Hilary can win with her history of lying, financial irregularity and lack security.

You mean 'with the whisper campaign that the Republicans have very successfully used to convince the gullible that she has broken the law and cannot be trusted...'

BeALert · 01/04/2016 17:00

I live in the US and I'm pretty horrified at the thought of Trump as president. But here's what consoles me...

First - there's almost zero chance he can win the election. He is universally hated, and either of the Democrat candidates could easily beat him according to pretty much every single poll you can find.

Second - even if he did get into power, the president actually can't do much without the support of the House and the Senate and the Supreme Court. Right now most of the Republican House and Senate reps who are up for re-election in anything other than totally safe states are wondering how the hell to play this - do they openly support Trump but probably lose their seats, or do they openly condemn him and keep their seats, but lose any positions of power if he does get in.

Third - most of what he is proposing is unconstitutional and won't happen. You can't just deport all Mexicans, you can't just make abortions illegal. The Supreme Court has the final say here, not the president.

The reason most Republicans are so horrified that Trump is likely to win the nomination is because they know it will lose them the Presidency.

He is tearing the Republican party apart. He is making them look even more ignorant, racist, misogynistic and plain dumb than even Sarah Palin managed. If anything, he is a gift to liberals.

VestalVirgin · 01/04/2016 17:33

Making abortion illegal punishes women enough. By killing doctors who know how to perform safe abortions, you indirectly kill women who are then forced to try to do abortions at home.

And that's the only reason why conservatives don't say aloud that they want women who get abortions punished: It make it harder to see that they hate women, while the harm done to women is not meaningfully reduced.

Besides, imprisoning all women who had an abortion would be less effective in reducing the availability of safe abortions than threatening the people with the skills and knowledge.

If a woman has a safe abortion, and you imprison her, then this will not keep other women from accessing safe abortions - after all, not even the risk of death keeps women from trying unsafe abortions at home, so a prison sentence is unlikely to have any effect.

The medical professionals are not that desperate, and may stop providing abortions if threatened enough.

I admit, I am quite the bit surprised that conservatives don't like what Trump said, and he probably is, too. I suppose it is a good thing there's a limit to the woman-hating that the public will tolerate, but I wouldn't have hoped for it.

SenecaFalls · 01/04/2016 18:42

I'm really surprised that some people on this thread think he was misquoted. The pro-life position (which is supposedly now his position) is that abortion should be illegal. But what he failed to understand is that the current position of the pro-life movement in the US is that women should not be punished, just the doctors who perform abortions.

He obviously had not done his homework on his newly-found conversion to pro-life. As for his being pushed, that's laughable. He's running for president; answering tough questions, even being "pushed" comes with the territory. On this issue he was clearly not ready for prime time and he managed to piss off both pro-life and pro-choice folks, which is not all that easy to do.

raisedbyguineapigs · 01/04/2016 18:51

open I was hoping that when the actual election came, nobody would vote for him and the Democrats would be a shoe in whoever won the nomination? Who on earth in their right mind would vote for him, apart from the increasingly reactionary republicans??

raisedbyguineapigs · 01/04/2016 18:54

bealert I heard so.eone say the George W Bush was such an idiot he was basically a figurehead, surrounded by people who did actually run the country. If that is true, worse case scenario, could that happen?

BeALert · 01/04/2016 19:06

I don't know... that's an interesting question. I suspect he'd find the actual job of being president very very boring and difficult.

Thymeout · 01/04/2016 19:45

But he'd love the ceremonial and the Situation Room. It'd be like Dr Strangelove.

The Channel 4 programme said the city of Cleveland is v worried about the convention. Have increased stocks of riot gear. If the Republican establishment blocks his candidacy, there will be the mother of all riots.

OpenMe · 01/04/2016 20:01

Don't they all have so many advisors they're not really in charge? I can't Imagine dc comes up with all the policy ideas on his own.

BeALert · 01/04/2016 20:02

Yes - I wouldn't want to be in Cleveland that week.

I understand why the Republicans want to find any way possible to block his nomination, but it would be about as undemocratic as you can get considering he is quite clearly the most popular candidate.

Birdsgottafly · 01/04/2016 20:54

""A young Durham Woman was inprisoned for 'inducing a miscarriage'.

That's an unfair analogy of the abortion law being used in the UK.

She was 32-34 weeks pregnant and left her son face down in the toilet, whilst she waited for an amulance for herself.

Strictly speaking she committed murder.

The abortion law, has been used against men and family members forcing women into illegal abortions.

I find the amount of support that DT has, very scary.

Justanotherlurker · 01/04/2016 21:30

He is universally hated, and either of the Democrat candidates could easily beat him according to pretty much every single poll you can find

Regardless of the OP, this is blatantly untrue, it may be unpalatable but trump is scoring pretty high in the democrat race and was yesterday +9 on pew etc.

Ted cruz is even more bat shit than trump, he has just hidden it well, trump is bad but he is in no way universally hated.

Lweji · 01/04/2016 21:54

trump is scoring pretty high in the democrat race
?
If anything is blatantly untrue...

Bellalongstone · 01/04/2016 22:20

As I work with victims of domestic abuse, words fail me. I used to have an American boyfriend and loved the US, but if this misogynistic and racist person is elected, I fear for everyone. Nuff said.

Justanotherlurker · 01/04/2016 22:21

Oops, yeah big fuck up there re democrat.... Blush

Still, universally hated is just as untrue.. (At least give me that one) ...

BeALert · 01/04/2016 22:29

I think you might have scuppered your credibility there Justanother.

Bellalongstone · 01/04/2016 22:34

Abortion is a woman's right. BeAlert...good to hear your assurances. We can only hope that the American voters will make the right decision for them and their families and children..and their freedom of choices. Fingers crossed!

Bellalongstone · 01/04/2016 22:38

Justanotherlurker...grumpy?

Justanotherlurker · 01/04/2016 22:46

True, although your 'universally hated' comment is blatantly untrue, hence why the reason why you are in this situation, the polls also suggest otherwise, there is enough shit to throw at trump without adding hyperbole.

Bellalongstone · 01/04/2016 22:52

Apologies, Justanotherlurker...I have reactivated my account after it being on ice for at least a year so my argument base is a bit rusty. I don't want to come over as being bossy but its so nice to find someone who will challenge perceptions. Our paths will probably never cross again, but carry on having your views. I work with women who are victims of domestic abuse...and their children, so have strong views. I wish you well. Caroline X
