My DD who is 3 has been having stomach/bowel problems for the last year. Diagnose as constipation. She can not pass a stool for weeks despite fantastic diet and laxatives and weeks is in severe pain most days. She is very petite and skinny but her stomach has swollen to look 9 months pregnant. Getting no where with doctors/hospital etc.
Aibu to think this is not how a heathy child's stomach should look.

Yes, yes, yes to Lougle 's advice!

Wafflenose · 01/04/2016 23:03

Just popped back in before bed, and am so upset to see that this is still going on. You are an amazing mum, and we're all so glad that your DD has you there to fight for her. Please do not leave the hospital until this situation has resolved. Your poor little girl sounds very unwell. They need to find the blockage, treat it and work out why it's happened so that she never has to go through this pain again. Sending you strength and hugs. And yes, do start a new thread when you're able.

OeufieTheEggaphant · 01/04/2016 23:03

Have been lurking for a couple of days OP; good luck back at the hospital Flowers

whois · 01/04/2016 23:03

I would start down that line. 'Can you guarantee me that this is idiopathic constipation?' (Only a fool would say yes). 'Can you assure me that there is no possibility of harm to my DD by watching and waiting?' 'Can you assure me that there is no likelihood of structural defect in the bowel?' Can you assure me that there is no likelihood of a perforation?.....ask the questions. Show the staff that you are concerned about serious complications.

This is good.

Signoritawhocansway · 01/04/2016 23:05

Oh Op. I stopped reading the thread when the watery poo started, so was surprised to see more posts. Your poor DD. Thinking of you both.x.

VagueIdeas · 01/04/2016 23:06

Brilliant series of questions from Lougie.

Read them out, word for word, if you have to.

Crabbitface · 01/04/2016 23:10

I have seen this thread on the active board for a couple of days and thought it must have descended into a bun fight about inappropriate usage of A&E. I so wish I was right - not for a minute did I expect to read about this utter, utter incompetence. Op I am so so sorry for you and your poor wee mite. Fingers crossed for a good result soon. Flowers

Blu · 01/04/2016 23:10

I suppose it might be different x-raying an abdomen, but all this talk of radiation? My DS has had HUNDREDS (really - 14 orthopaedic operations and associated treatment) of x-rays and no-one ever mentions radiation except to re-assure me.

I so hope they quickly find the right kind of help that your little girl needs, Op.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 01/04/2016 23:14

Good luck, OP and mini OP!

Headofthehive55 · 01/04/2016 23:14

you can't guarantee anything. You also can't guarantee that intervention is risk free either.

I guess they have to weigh up risks and benefits to all treatments.

Op, I've had to administer a succession of enemas before now, sometimes they fail to work for us too.

Gileswithachainsaw · 01/04/2016 23:16

yy blu it's a cop out.

god I'm. not a dr few of us on this thread are, yet we have all had the same ideas re causes. the same things are flashing up.over and over.

if they can occur to is Wtf is the problem.that numerous medical staff can't bloody think.of them.

one sodding x ray is going to be zero risk. what so ever and they do them all the bloody time.

how can we get it but 5 yrs at uni, more if they have specialised, render someone so frickin useless.

notapizzaeater · 01/04/2016 23:17

Your poor love, agree if she's lived with the pain for so long she might not know what pain is now :-(

lougle · 01/04/2016 23:19

I agree, Headofhives, but I do think that at this stage an xray would be a risk worth taking. DD3 had an xray without a second's thought when she swallowed a 5p coin. The harm/benefit consideration there was so easy - if it was in the trachea it could cause severe breathing problems. However, the risk was no less than that posed to the OP's child.

landrover · 01/04/2016 23:20

Thankyou all xx. i have posted about this before but obviously don't want to unnecessarily worry anybody. Im absolutely sure that the OP will get it sorted. It is so very frustrating to me when I read posts that GP etc doesn't take mums worries seriously when they know their child better than anybody. It is a very rare mum that wants her child hospitalised and medicated for no reason. Why do doctors not listen to us. We get the usual "its a virus" (meaning we don't know what it is so go away without antibiotics). My 14 month old died of meningitis because the medics wouldn't believe that she had had a temp for 5 days, insisted it was viral, blah blah etc. Doctors can be wrong xxx Really hope the OP gets sorted. If her child was an adult, they wouldn't have put up with this for so long, that is the irony. The other point I always make is that a vet wouldn't allow your pet to suffer like this! But GPs think otherwise!

Hissy · 01/04/2016 23:20

Another one here thinking of you all, hugs to you all.

Do we know whereabouts you are? Do you need anything?

Spurtle · 01/04/2016 23:21

I've been following this thread too but not commented until now. I just wanted to say I'm thinking of you and your poor wee girl. Fingers crossed for you xxx

How exhausting for you all. And I think you have more confidence than you give yourself credit for.

lougles advice is sound.

BasinHaircut · 01/04/2016 23:25

I'm just Shock at this thread! Your poor DD. Hope you are getting somewhere now

landrover · 01/04/2016 23:25

Lougle, those questions are brilliant x

summerdreams · 01/04/2016 23:26

My sons had 2 xrays, a chest xray at birth and a chest xray in a&e because he kept turning blue.
I was given a chest xray 33 weeks pregnant as they believed I had a blood clot. Its all excuses to not do anything I really hope you and dd are getting taken seriously.Cake

Footle · 01/04/2016 23:26

I've had stomach ache all day from reading this. God knows how you are getting through it. All the best to your little girl.

BoatyMcBoat · 01/04/2016 23:35

I do hope they get the poor little mite sorted out on the ward, tonight. You have been shunted from pillar to post on this and it's not right. Flowers

lougle · 01/04/2016 23:40

Landrover Flowers if it is any consolation at all, I am certain that the memory of your little girl will be etched in those medics' minds forever more. I am also certain that each of those involved are now absolutely vigilant when a parent describes symptoms. We all make mistakes (although some are much, much worse than others), but as a nurse I can remember in detail the situations in which I've made mistakes, whether through assumptions, distraction, etc. (Just to reassure, I've never made a serious mistake, but I've still learned from minor mistakes). Most areas have M&M meetings now, where they look at the treatment of a patient who has died in detail, combing through the care given to see if a different outcome could have occurred, if mistakes were made and if lessons could be learned. I hope that's a small comfort.

dreame · 01/04/2016 23:41

OP so glad you're going back in (although wish there was no reason for you to have to in the first place).

I agree with others about the complaint, ESPECIALLY about the GP. I know you put one in before, but when you've got some energy back, another is warranted. You've been treated unbelievably badly.

But right now I hope your little girl is finally getting the treatment she needs. Thanks

Wilberforce2 · 01/04/2016 23:47

I have been following this for the last few days and am gobsmacked at the lack of care your dd has received, so glad to hear they wanted you both back in and I really hope you get some help tonight x
