AIBU about my DP's sandwich making weirdness? This is serious shit.

My DP made me a BLT last week. I asked for mayo, so he put mayo on one slice of bread, then butter on the other.

I didn't want butter, and thought it was weird that he considered that an integral part of sandwich making. I politely pointed this out and he said he wouldn't put butter in my sandwiches again unless I specifically requested it.

So, the other day he made me another BLT. No butter. Just mayo. All good you say? NO! Because he only put the mayo on one slice of the bread. So I had one dry slice of bread on one side of my sandwich. I went to get the mayo to add to the dry bread (because WTF?) and he now claims I am massive sandwich fascist and there's no difference between having sauce on one slice of bread rather than both.

I think he's a massive freak. Plus he always slightly toasts his bread before sandwich making. Which makes my unbuttered/unsauced slice EVEN DRIER!

Please tell me there's no one else out there this odd?

I'm on your side, OP. YANBU.

My husband made me a sandwich recently and buttered both slices of bread, no mayo. I pointed out I don't like butter in sandwiches, he didn't know. We've been together for seven years.

Of COURSE you would put mayo on both slices.

The next time he made one, in an attempt to redeem himself, he cut the cheese so thick it was gag-worthy. I laughed at him, so he sulked for a bit.

Ooo, honest, no I'm not, English as English can be, but sounds like emigration might be in order.

But why Elementary why? There's a whole load of oily, fatty goodness there already - why are you adding more, and incongruent, fat?

I mean, you don't really have to explain yourself to me, nor do I hold you responsible for all the butter/mayo crossover abominations, but I'm interested.

I have a similar issue with the husband who made me I mentioned that we could use some pate up from the fridge - he prepared pate no butter on bread - I expected butter and toast. He also cuts cheese far too thick

Thurlow · 16/03/2016 16:58

Pate on bread? Shock

diddl · 16/03/2016 17:02

I think that it's odd to use mayo as a butter alternative.

Have butter or don't have butter.

But mayo is splodged on top of the b,l&t, not spread on bread!!

OliviaStabler · 16/03/2016 17:05

A sandwich is not a sandwich without butter or at least some form of spread. I don't have butter on both slices but might put mayo on mustard on the other slice.

RhiWrites · 16/03/2016 17:10

It goes

Bread
Spread
Filling
Spread
Bread

YANBU.

I like my sandwiches a certain way. I make them myself.

lighteningirl · 16/03/2016 17:27

How did he get to be your dh without knowing how you like your sandwiches I think he's an ea and you should ltb

IdBuyThatForADollar · 16/03/2016 17:33

Hah lighteningirl - I think that tells you more about my control issues around cooking than it does about him. He should probs LTB instead.

OP posts:
Yika · 16/03/2016 17:36

I have not RTFT but in fact the way to make a BLT according to the law is mayo on one slice and mustard on the other.

There is no butter in a BLT.

AlpacaPicnic · 17/03/2016 16:14

I have stopped accepting sandwiches at my friends house. He doesn't use butter or spread but will occasionally use the meagerest (sp?) swirl of sauce.

So it'll be
Dry bread
one 'thin as a post it note' slice of ham
tiny swirl of hp sauce
dry bread.

His sandwiches make me sad. So dry. So tasteless. And he has double butties, i.e. four slices of bread into two sandwiches.

We disagree on what counts as 'a sandwich' as well, so I had to be very specific - I would like two slices of bread please.

He uses thick bread and thin ham, all you can taste is bread, but it's tasteless bread.

Making a sandwich is an art, therefore it comes down to personal preferences with no rights or wrongs. It would be very unreasonable to expect someone to know how I like mine.

Janeymoo50 · 17/03/2016 16:27

Butter on both slices of bread, whatever filling and seasoning, a sprinkle if pepper always is the last thing i add to a sandwich. Plus they have to be cut in half not triangles.

MyFriendGoo52 · 17/03/2016 16:37

Dtwat p Doesnt butter the corners.

Even worse, he doesnt match the crusts up either 😠

EasilyDistracted21 · 17/03/2016 16:49

to be fair, i'm part of the mayo is awful team

lavenderhoney · 17/03/2016 16:54

OP, if he made the bacon on a pan, why didn't he drop the bread in to make the inside part of the bread in the sandwich all tasty and a bit crunchy? And get the flavour of the bacon in the bread, not waste etc. But then I fry bacon in a tiny bit of butter.

I don't even eat sandwiches, I don't like them. The DC do though:)

FithColumnist · 17/03/2016 16:55

OP, please supply your home address ASAP so that the mob has adequate time to gather pitchforks and flaming torches before assembling outside. YABVU. Your poor DH is clearly a saint to live with such a deviant.

peppatax · 17/03/2016 16:58

YANBU. I can't fathom why people butter with peanut butter - the clue is in the name. Otherwise it's double buttering.

iseenodust · 17/03/2016 17:12

Butter has been around thousands of years and is clearly a good thing on bread. Mayonnaise is nearly liquid, new-fangled and foreign and so very, very wrong.

shovetheholly · 17/03/2016 17:21

Cold veggie sausage sandwiches MUST have ketchup in them. If not, the product is an abomination and my human rights have pretty much been violated.

Health food peanut butter with all the skins mashed into a lumpy paste is a penance not a food.

Jam is perfectly acceptable for adults, as is chocolate spread. Chocolate spread combined with peanut butter is smashing.

ScoopyDoo · 17/03/2016 17:39

My preference is mayo OR butter, not both, and never a dry slice UNLESS it is abutting the pickle on top of a cheese and pickle sandwich.

I can accept and even celebrate differences across and within the sandwich-making-community apart from the pp who said they'd butter an egg mayo sandwich fortheloveofgod

BUT, recognising this may be off-topic, my DH would butter a wrap and this is NEVER acceptable.
