ExitPursuedByABear · 12/03/2016 08:53

The figures ive seen show we contribute far more than we get back.

Chocolatteaddict1 · 12/03/2016 08:54

black Grin sounds interesting ! Nearly spat my banana smoothie out!

If we leave the EU theyare not going to give us a free trade agreement for free, we will have to pay as much, if not more, than we currently do and we will have no say in any of the rules or workings of the EU. If we decide not to pay then the import taxes on goods and services will be passed onto the people much like CCT is now.
We will also have to negotiate other trade deals with other large trading blocs and we won't have the economies of scale that the EU gives us so that will cost more as well. The rest of the world doesn't want to encourage the EU to break down so they will NOT give us favourable terms.
I hate the idea that if we leave then we have no voice within the EU which account for 50% of our trade.
In terms of the laws that people seem to hate I don't see them as a problem. I have benefited from the maternity and sickness protection that the EU gives us.
I also believe that having lived in a time of peace in Europe bought about by better integration I owe it to future generations to maintain these close links and not support the march towards nationalism.

EponasWildDaughter · 12/03/2016 09:18

Out.

purits · 12/03/2016 09:25

If we leave the EU they are not going to give us a free trade agreement for free

They sell more to us than we sell to them. They would be cutting off their nose to spite their face.
Worst case scenario is that we default to world tariff prices which IIRC is only about 2 or 2.5%.

I hate the idea that if we leave then we have no voice within the EU which account for 50% of our trade.

Put it another way: if we leave then we can forge great deals with the Rest of the World, which already accounts for 50% of our trade. Our trade with the EU is declining - why do you want a 'voice' within a declining market, let's go chase growing markets.

The EU has convinced you that we cannot survive without them. It's like an abusive relationship. Let's LTB.

PageStillNotFound404 · 12/03/2016 09:26

In, for many reasons already mentioned upthread. On a more selfish note, my sector would suffer significantly under Brexit.

NameRanger · 12/03/2016 09:28

Does anyone know whether MNHQ's referendum survey was majority In or Out?

I've found this;

www.mumsnet.com/surveys/results/the-eu-referendum-survey-results

But it only list (as far as I can see) who voters trust etc and not an actual In/Out result.

I'd be interested to know how the 1500 odd who took part voted.

positivity123 · 12/03/2016 09:32

exitpusuedbyabear the 'rediculous notion' that it will take years to negotiate these trade agreements is based on the fact it took 5 years to agree the Canada/EU deal then a further two years to implement. The recently signed TPP took 9 years to get to the point it is at now ( involves about 12 countries).

GruntledOne · 12/03/2016 09:34

In. We would be insane to leave.

Roonerspism · 12/03/2016 09:35

Out.

Bureaucratic. Undemocratic. Expensive. (Why don't people get where the EU money comes from to begin with). Authoritarian.

And, sadly, I feel the concept of free movement of persons only really works well where there is an equal standard of living across all EU countries.

blackistheneworange · 12/03/2016 09:37

chocolatte as soon as I posted I realised. A completely different thread that one! Grin

Hoppinggreen · 12/03/2016 09:37

There are several reasns why I will be voting in but mainly because we have absolutely no idea what the situation would be if we did leave. People argue that "this will happen" or "French farmers won't allow xyz" but in fact NOBODY knows what would happen. We are one small country and not n the same position we were n when we joined. We simply do not have the power to negotiate an agreement that would be favourable to us.

Roonerspism · 12/03/2016 09:39

Uncertainty isn't a good enough reason to remain for me hopping. It's uncertain either way. The EU is in a bloody mess either way. It's negotiating with Turkey for membership FFS.

purits · 12/03/2016 09:39

'ridiculous notion' that it will take years to negotiate these trade agreements

That will be an interesting one. It is actually written into the Treaties that on exit it should take no more that two years to negotiate trade agreements.
But when did the EU ever implement its own laws? They will footdrag and obfuscate, like they always do.

Ohbehave1 · 12/03/2016 09:40

The common market was a great idea. The
State of Europe governing us and giving us no real say in the running of our country is destroying us.

Looks like the Germans are getting their way at the third attempt.....

MajesticWhine · 12/03/2016 09:41

I'm really horribly undecided. But at the moment possibly In.

Followyourart · 12/03/2016 09:43

Agree with hopping that we simply do not have enough power, without the Eu. We may have been powerful in the past, but not anymore.

positivity123 · 12/03/2016 09:44

Only 2% to 2.5% that is a huge amount! Imagine having to pay that extra on all imported goods. If inflation jumped up by that amount a lot of people would struggle.
They sell more to us we still sell more to the whole EU and they would cut off their nose to ensure others don't follow suit. What growing markets should we chase?
I think GB is a really strong economy and has a lot going for it but I honestly think that we benefit far more from being in the EU than we would out of it

purits · 12/03/2016 09:52

So we don't import from the EU, we go elsewhere. Honestly, if people are normally this small-minded then we jeer at them for being 'little Englanders'. The EU are trying to scare you into beliveing that we, the fifth biggest economy in the world, cannot survive without them. It's laughable.

Roonerspism · 12/03/2016 09:55

It is laughable. It is in the EU's interests to continue to trade with us. Those trade agreements will be concluded pretty damn quickly.

positivity123 · 12/03/2016 10:09

I'm not scared I

positivity123 · 12/03/2016 10:10

TinySombrero · 12/03/2016 10:10

NameRanger I haven't found the results either!

tangerinesarenottheonlyfruit · 12/03/2016 10:17

"It is in the EU's interests to continue to trade with us."

It certainly isn't.

It is in the EU's interests to keep the other member states in. That far outweighs any incentive or trade deal we can offer them.

Giving us a good deal risks destabilising the EU project entirely. They will punish us for leaving. We will be at greater risk of having our country carved up and sold off to the highest bidder - more so than it is already.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 12/03/2016 10:17

I'm an out, fairly sure I'll remain an out, but I actually think a lot of outs or undecideds will bottle it at the polling booth and vote in.
