Every TV show seems to have people banging on about how proud they are of what they've done.

It seems so big-headed - so immodest and boastful.

Perhaps this is more about poor usage of language

The BBC has an ad campaign for itself running on the theme of Run yourself proud, ride yourself proud, punch yourself proud, row yourself proud, wank youself proud....

that kind of thing - I'm living in the past I guess, where pride was a sin and modesty was a virtue

I agree, OP. We're creating a very narcissistic society, where everything is an achievement.

I don't think it's wrong to be proud of true achievements.
Something you've worked hard for or have found particularly difficult.
Not sure about the need to broadcast it to all and sundry though.

I agree OP. The interior design challenge contestants were particularly bad for this. Never mind what the client thinks of the rubbish mess I've made of their living room, I'm SO PROUD of myself.

I think there should be a level of pride in ones self and things you have worked for. That's not the same as Kardashian level self importance though

I am proud of myself sometimes. When I actually tidy the house before watching telly, or when I passed all my exams.
But I don't tell everyone about it.
I think it's nice when people are proud but a bit naive to think everyone else cares.

To be honest having worked with self esteem issues for years its on the whole a very good thing I would say. But the usual vacuous reality tv dickheads will ruin it I suppose ...

I think it's probably good if your parents or significant close people are 'proud of your achievements' but to be proud of yourself!?

To me, it just seems like saying "I've done a great thing but I can't be doing with standing around waiting for all you arseholes to see how great I am, so I'll just make it clear to you now - I'm proud of myself - so you should admire me too."

I kind of get what you mean. I do a bit of running and the amount of self congratulating that goes on on Facebook from other runners can be ridiculous, especially if they - gasp - run in the rain. You'd think they'd braved a raging blizzard to save a small child by the amount of patting themselves on the back they indulge in. They've just gone out and done their hobby for God's sake!!

Its just another word that's been hijacked and overused by the vacuous and self absorbed. If its used in the right context it doesn't bother me but it rarely is these days! I'm grumpy though. And proud of myself for noticing

I think it started with building self esteem. The trouble is some people take it too far a bit like " because you deserve it."

I think you're being a bit of a twat.

If you've done something to be proud of, then you should feel proud of it. It's not immodest, and not boastful - it's a fact. It's completely okay. And the bullshit attitude of "don't acknowledge your accomplishments because it looks arrogant" is what causes so many self esteem issues.

My SIL is always on Facebook being Proud of something not wanking so far

And why not tell people? We're always telling other people "you should be proud of yourself for that!" but then should disapprove if they say, "well yes I am actually"?

OK.. Sometimes I am proud of myself.

I am often proud of myself for being barely adequate, ie getting through a day without eating junk food or managing to clean the kitchen.

I think the issue is loudly proclaiming proudness on TV or facebook, it is a bit blah.

Pride - for me, is signified by a sort of puffed-up quality, an arrogance, a sense of 'look at me'.

Being pleased at having cleaned the house before that first drink of the day is great - I'm pleased about that - it's a step forward - but being proud of it...

Perhaps I am grumpy - it makes peoples lives seem pretty pissy generally when the thing they're most proud of is having run round a track or balanced a ball on their foot for an hour and a half - perhaps we're in an age where most of us (in the grand sense of things) are destined to achieve fuck all and the 'secret state' decided that to keep us all happy and passive, it would be good to allow us all to be proud of going to work on a regular basis or brushing our teeth and saving the NHS a few bob on fillings or making sure our kids get to school on time - all the tough stuff

That's not boastful.

Boastful would be jumping in saying "I'm so proud" before the other person says anything.
