Just had a discussion. aibu to say that cultural appropriation works both ways? A number of black bloggers and models have slated Kim Kardashian and Kylie jenner for wearing "boxer braids". But I have yet to see anyone commenting on Beyonce culturally appropriate Indian culture , hairstyle, dress and adornment for her song Hymn for the Weekend?

Now I think people are confusing box braids and boxer braids. They are two completely different hair styles.

Yes they are. Kim kardashian had boxer braids. The back lash being the the name was changed from cornrows. To make it more appealing.

However the term boxer/boxing braids refer to a similar style as Dutch braid or multiple French plaits has been around for a long time.

Lanark2 · 26/02/2016 15:36

Real what's the line between homage, acceptance and appropriation

BadDoGooder · 26/02/2016 15:37

I don't know anything about the Kardasians tbf. But yeah, clearly the one at the top is cornrows, and the bottom pic is boxer braids.
They are different, and am I right in thinking cornrows have specific cultural roots?

Lanark2 · 26/02/2016 15:37

What? Why is it KKK to ask about appropriation, and why be offended if things cross over?

Not.

Katenka · 26/02/2016 15:41

Let's be clear. My dd wears BoxER/ boxING braids. Very similar to Kim Kardashian. Happily I can say she has been wearing these since before Kim Kardashian delighted is with her presence. I have worn them, as did mum and her mother.

She does not wear cornrows. I can't imagine her even being able to box broad or cornrow her own hair, not that she would try.

Debbrianabottomburp · 26/02/2016 15:43

"those in India were encouraging me to do it and were pleased to see a tourist embracing their culture."

Bertrand if you were talking about henna then I think it's also slightly different. A lot of places around the would use henna. The ones I can think of is India, Arab countries, Kenya, Tanzania, south and north Sudan.

I also I remember a few years ago when Camila and prince Charles when they went to Tanzania she had henna done and no one complained. I'd dint see anything wrong with it.

The third and fourth picture I posted they are called box braids not boxer braids. That is also why I included the twist because they may look the similar abut they are not. Boxer braids are French plates., only that it's closer to cornrows.( which they are but done bigger. ) wish I had done the pictures separately.

Katenka · 26/02/2016 15:53

I know deb

The point of the OP was Kim kardashians BoxER braids

BadDoGooder · 26/02/2016 15:55

Lanark what did you intend to say by just posting the name "Leroy" then?

And some of your other posts were offensive and goady, so you can't act all hurt when you do finally ask a semi-sensible question and get an angry response. If you wanted to actually engage in the debate you could have done so pages back.

Cornrows are most similar to French plaits, but lots of very narrow ones, which keeps the hair tight into the head.

Box plaits are small (box like) sections, each twisted/plaited/styled to the ends, so not tight to the head.

Dutch plait is an inside out French plait.

BoxER plaits are more than one Dutch plait.
