Just had a discussion. aibu to say that cultural appropriation works both ways? A number of black bloggers and models have slated Kim Kardashian and Kylie jenner for wearing "boxer braids". But I have yet to see anyone commenting on Beyonce culturally appropriate Indian culture , hairstyle, dress and adornment for her song Hymn for the Weekend?

We shall respectfully agree to disagree then Bale! Wink
(actually I used to listen to loads of metal, but I went off quite a lot for a variety of reasons, still listen to some though!)

If learning other cultures instruments was stopped on the basis of percieved CA the music in the country would be awful!!
Lutes anyone?! Grin

TheBalefulGroke · 26/02/2016 11:56

Lutes and dulcimers sound utterly gorgeous, actually!

vienna1981 · 26/02/2016 12:04

Interesting that the sort of music that Hall and Oates and Simply Red make (or used to) was often labelled 'blue-eyed soul'. Yet Simply Red's early line-ups consisted of at least two black members and I doubt either of these gentlemen had blue eyes.

Culture is a funny old businessConfused.

TheBalefulGroke · 26/02/2016 12:07

Gosh- would simply red classify as culture?

This musical musing is all getting somewhat off-topic though.

Lanark2 · 26/02/2016 12:12

I do hate it when working class people start buying Joules and getting up themselves, Have I understood this to be the same thing? I was quite impressed by working class kids at school, so maybe it feels the same? What do you think?

Ubik1 · 26/02/2016 12:18

What about the swastika?

I know of a little girl called swastika. she is Hindu.

What about st Patrick's day in America?

Cultural appropriation just doesn't make sense to me. Our cultures are s mishmash of everything we take from our environment.

What is 'black culture'?

BadDoGooder · 26/02/2016 12:21

Grin at using thewords "Simply Red" and "culture" in the same sentence!!

As you were......

MitzyLeFrouf · 26/02/2016 12:23

Simply Red is basically just Mick Hucknall. His band are more like session musicians than true band members.

TheBalefulGroke · 26/02/2016 12:26

Ubik- is there anyone on MN that would not denounce the appropriation of the swastika by the Nazis as wrong?

I think it all depends on where the power (and the money) lies. White English girls wearing native American headdresses at Glastonbury is all a bit Marie Antoinette dressing up as a shepherdess for lolz.

Awadebumbo · 26/02/2016 12:50

And here we go again with the mockery and snide remarks. Oh those silly black people moaning about their lot again.
I tell you what shall we just all as a race just shut up about what we find offensive and derogatory. A lot of white people seem to be very uncomfortable when they told something they do offends them, sometimes I think that white society will only accept you as a black person as long as you act like a good little house nigger and know your place. I view point that is re-enforced here whenever there is thread about race on this site. Ridicule and mocker is all you get for try to explain to people how you feel. I'm out of this thread and doubt I will return, it's soul destroying to try and make people understand you and have them laugh to your face and amongst themselves about what you're trying to explain.

Lanark2 · 26/02/2016 12:51

What is a house nigger?

Please read the link I posted.

Katenka · 26/02/2016 12:58

ilove was the everyday feminism one?

I could read it as it kept telling me I had won an iPhone six and the pop up wouldn't piss off. Looked interesting though

BertrandRussell · 26/02/2016 13:00

"those in India were encouraging me to do it and were pleased to see a tourist embracing their culture."

Yep. People often have to do very depressing things for money..........

I don't think you do see Lanark. At all.

BarbarianMum · 26/02/2016 13:04

I think cultural appropriation can be hugely insensitive. However, I also don't think many physical things (including hairstyles in this) can easily be ascribed to a cultural. Curved buttocks are not exclusive to black women fe.

MitzyLeFrouf · 26/02/2016 13:04

What a stupid fucking post.

BadDoGooder · 26/02/2016 13:04

Who's making snide remarks?
We were taking the piss out of Simply Red!

I am genuinely asking questions, because I don't know what lines people draw. I am in no way trying to dismiss your feelings or opinions.
I have honestly never, ever spoken to any black person in RL life who had a problem with my hair (as I pointed out, the last convo I had with someone they said I looked more like Ragnor Lothbrook!!) so I have taken the chance on this thread of trying to understand more.

I think as PP said, there is a lot of "appropiation" of lots of different cultures now a days, a lot of those cultures were also oppressed in some way or other. Also there can also said to be debate about the origins of some hairstyles/tattoos etc (though not rasta dreads admittedly).
Is it possible to have a conversation about this without offending someone?

Did you read my question about ska music? I had never thought of it before I read this thread and I would be interested to hear your opinion.

MitzyLeFrouf · 26/02/2016 13:04

That wasn't aimed at you Barbarian.

BadDoGooder · 26/02/2016 13:07

And yes, if I am offending people I will take it on the chin and hear it out. But as I have never come across someone in my life who objected, I wasn't aware that there were lots of people who do.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 26/02/2016 13:12

I do hate it when working class people start buying Joules and getting up themselves, Have I understood this to be the same thing?

no, that's a really fucking stupid and insensitive comment- SHAME ON YOU

you sound like a "disgusted from Tunbridge wells" DM reader saying stuff like that

BadDoGooder · 26/02/2016 13:20

I do agree with stopfuckingshouting that the stuff you are coming out with Lanark is just out of order.
I'm trying to listen and understand, and ask questions, and I don't want to be lumped in with your comments, thanks.
