Purely in the interests of linguistic accuracy:

Cross breed = two breeds of dog

Mongrel = more than two

And in the interests of sanity:

All "breeds" were bred.

lastuseraccount123 · 19/02/2016 22:36

devere i also wanted a pug but was put off by what i found out.

Whitney168 · 19/02/2016 22:37

A dog is a dog.

Well, no - many, whether pedigree, crossbreed or mongrel, are entirely unsuitable for certain homes and it never hurts to accept this for everybody's benefit.

It doesn't matter if they are a pedigree, a designer dog, or you don't even know what they are - what matters is they are right for you and have a good home.

And healthy ... But agree with the rest.

If cross breeds are bred to the same level of care that a GOOD pedigree is with regard to official health testing schemes, temperament, advice, care for the right home etc. then let buyers buy what they will. The vast majority aren't though, and are marketed through blatant untruths.

moosemama · 19/02/2016 22:37

Yanbu.

Ds2 finds all the designer crossbreed names highly amusing, but insists he would love to have a Great Pyrenees cross Poodle, just so he can tell people his dog is a Great Poo. Grin

I have two mongrels that go by a sort of breed name though, as they are both Lurchers ... and both rescues, which is the only type of dog I will have, regardless of breed.

That said, one does regularly go by the name of Lanky Snoozehoud, so maybe that's could be his new designer breed.

I did train the dcs to tell their friends the younger dog was a Girfoo, (cross between a Giraffe and a Kangaroo) when we first got him as a pup - and was then gobsmacked when some of them actually fell for it and asked what breeds he was made up of. Confused

lastuseraccount123 · 19/02/2016 22:37

rustic agreed, we adopted a mum and her kitten. WE couldn't bear to separate them.

Luckily the OH adores cats, so that was easy.

CommanderShepard · 19/02/2016 22:37

I am reminded just how much I want a dog! That cocker spaniel - poodle cross is gorgeous.

Another mongrel lover here! I wouldn't be without my boy.

No, you have a mongrel
Goadyflattery · 19/02/2016 22:39

Isn't he? Scum breeder though.

rusticmeadowwildflower · 19/02/2016 22:40

Goady I don't think that's what is being said here - most of us on this thread I think love animals and would be very upset at one treated cruelly.

I'm not sure, myself, that cross breeding in itself is indicative of animal cruelty. I agree some breeders are unscrupulous but that applies to all breeds sadly.

I have known Labradoodles, cockerpoos et al who enhance the families they belong to greatly - just the right fit for that family. If I ever get another dog it will probably be a cockerpoo.

They are given names for the same reason all breeds are - it's descriptive. If I say 'labrador' you know what to expect but 'mongrel' you don't. Even rescue centres will try to indicate some of a breed for this reason - whippet cross or similar - to help give people an idea of size and temperament.

lastuseraccount123 · 19/02/2016 22:40

you might just have dogs but mine is my friend and my bff and my bestie. so there.

diddl · 19/02/2016 22:40

Shiloh the cockerpoo is gorgeous!

Bastardshittits · 19/02/2016 22:42

The strangest crossbreed I have ever seen was the product of a Great Dane bitch and a black show type cocker spaniel. Huge and boisterous. Beautiful though. He reminded me a bit of Clifford The Big Red Dog. Except he was black.

Kpo58 · 19/02/2016 22:44

It annoys me the amount of people who breed their dogs because otherwise they wont be 'fulfilled' and project human emotions on why they wont neuter them.

PovertyPain · 19/02/2016 22:46

This is for all those people who love to point out that their dog is a pure bred. Grin

rusticmeadowwildflower · 19/02/2016 22:46

That's quite a common school of thought for cats as well. I've known a couple of people who let their cat have one litter. It's a shame as it really perpetuates the problem of too many animals and it's distressing for the dog or cat when the puppies or kittens are taken away.

Goadyflattery · 19/02/2016 22:46

I just don't understand, when shelters are heaving with dogs, puppies, some with issues, some with not. Why anyone would do anything to encourage the breeding of more. I am straying off the point of the thread though which is what they are called, which doesn't bother me at all.
It's just that on my FB feed tonight, some lovely labs have been given up for no reason other than the owner changed his mind and the lovely Shiloh was deliberately bred and then dumped on a rescue to deal with because he is too ugly.
That breeder will go straight home and start breeding again from the exhausted mum. That goes for pedigrees too.
I just don't understand it and I should stay away from these threads.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 19/02/2016 22:47

Have what ever dog you like, but please stop with the 'labradoodle', 'shittypoo' 'pieceofcrapadoodle' shit. You sound ridiculous.

Yeah, no. We're not the ridiculous-sounding ones here. I think you might need to lie down for a bit, you're very tense.

Goadyflattery · 19/02/2016 22:48

Appalling grammar, random full stops, sorry.

Dungandbother · 19/02/2016 22:50

My DC are keen to have a dog. I think they need one for companionship as I'm a single mum. Good to tell their secrets too. I need to get on with it, dogs live for 10-15 years and my youngest is 5. Perfect timing.

I'm allergic to cats.

I live in suburbs but with good parks.

I have asthma.

I have a small house and garden.

I want a lively dog that is robust enough for my children to roll around with. I don't want a huge fur issue because of my asthma.
I would like a small dog as my house is small so bed/cage space is relevant.
I want a dog that can go for a run next to me, so athletic.

I've thought very long and very hard about what is right for our family.

I'm looking for a cavapoo or a schnoodle. Preferably slightly older because I've never trained a dog before.

I actually don't know where to start! So seeing as there are lots of dog folks here.... Does anyone have any suggestions?

limitedperiodonly · 19/02/2016 22:51

It's a crossbreed. Why does it bother you as long as the parents are kept well and the puppies go to good homes?

That should be the same with purebreeds, shouldn't it?

MrTiddlestheFatCat · 19/02/2016 22:52

And if everyone 'minded their own business and concentrated on their own lives' nothing would ever be done about animal cruelty or puppy farms.

I agree with this entirely. People seem to breed & buy them as a commodity, without little thought to the fact we are over-run with the poor buggers in shelters. Puppies are lovely, but I do genuinely believe that if you love dogs, you don't care what breed/style it was, you're just happy to have a dog in your life!

I know a lot of people who bought a dog because it seemed stylish, when in reality they weren't actually that keen on dogs...

SoupDragon · 19/02/2016 22:53

These threads are tedious and done to death. People can call their dog whatever they damn well like. I'm sure cocker spaniel was once a made up name/dog.

Crispbutty · 19/02/2016 22:53

when i was a kid we had a basset hound (pure pedigree with crufts history), he escaped a few times...(he was the naughtiest dog you could ever meet.. one example was pushing a chair up to to the kitchen worktop, so that he could get to the high cupboard where my mum had left the sunday joint to cool... another example was his ability to get into the fridge and raid everything in it.. ..

however on his escapades he met a few of the other neighbourhood females..

all i can say is, when you cross anything with a basset, no dna is needed Grin

disclaimer: this was the 1970's and there really wasnt a problem with over crowded rescue centres back then, and our next two dogs were both from rescues..

Ketsby · 19/02/2016 22:54

Eh, I guess the difference is a crossbreed, you know the two breeds you're gettig which allows for some selection of temperament and appearance, as well as features like non-shedding.

But it's not like this is a new argument. What's left to be said about it?
