fwiw there are no kill shelters where I am, so no dogs are dying in rescues.

CityFox · 19/02/2016 22:18

It puts people off when so many won't, it makes you assume there had to be a pretty good reason why so many won't.

People don't like to take unnecessary risks were their young DC are involved.

CockwombleJeff · 19/02/2016 22:19

Tooold carry on with your raising awareness - we all have issues that are personal to us - but within that you have to live and let live and accept that other people's views are equal to yours .

lastuseraccount123 · 19/02/2016 22:19

izza idk what's cuter, the dog or the baby. omg.

TotalConfucius · 19/02/2016 22:19

Well, I have nowt world-changing to say, but wouldn't it be blooming marvellous if Toy Golden Retrievers were available. Perfick replicas with feathery tails, slobbery soft mouths and big brown eyes. About the size of a Yorkshire terrier would do it.
It would save me getting dead feet every night from Big Dog sleeping on em.

rusticmeadowwildflower · 19/02/2016 22:21

I'm not sure whether I'm broody for a baby or s puppy now! Grin

Did you see her paws?

lastuseraccount123 · 19/02/2016 22:22

That's a shame but I'm sure your dp will be rehomed soon Grin Wink

I just have cats at the moment - have to satisfy myself by making an unholy fuss of dogs belonging to friends, with the result that I am like the dog whisperer and am surrounded by hounds when I visit as they know I will scratch bellies/throw toys/give treats!

OttiliaVonBCup · 19/02/2016 22:27

I think people are fine with mongrels, but Hmm when mongrels are called a fancy made up name to charge more money for them.

Sagethyme · 19/02/2016 22:28

For all those saying take on a dog that is in a shelter its not that easy! Our two local shelters won't let you take on a dog if children are under 8 years old. A dog is a part of the family, people choose their dog as they would a partner, why should they be restricted to whats in the shelter, if its not quite what they are looking for? Bloody hell if i'd been restricted to what hung out at my local pub i'd rather be a spinster Grin

OttiliaVonBCup · 19/02/2016 22:28

The Bernese Sheepdog has such lovely pink paw pads.

Awwww!

rusticmeadowwildflower · 19/02/2016 22:29

I've never heard anybody state they are buying the dog for the name.

IME it's generally related either to allergies or to a fairly legitimate want to not have the house submerged in dog hair. I had a bichon frise (which themselves were derived from poodles and Maltese) and I adore the breed but yes, the hair thing influenced my eventual choice.

Whitney168 · 19/02/2016 22:29

A brief look at the history of all breeds shows it came about through selecting the traits of the breeds that were wanted.

Absolutely - but they were bred by true stockmen, who had little interest in anything but how the dogs performed their required job - which also required them to be healthy - not by someone who thinks Dog A and Dog B will make cute puppies.

Goadyflattery · 19/02/2016 22:29

Any takers? The breeder says too ugly to sell, so dumped it on the rescue

No, you have a mongrel
rusticmeadowwildflower · 19/02/2016 22:30

Looks gorgeous to me :)

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 19/02/2016 22:30

Some of these names are... Great? I now want a bull-shitz for its name.

Actually, I would get a collie/staffie/shepherd from a shelter if I could have a dog here.

Goadyflattery · 19/02/2016 22:30

It's bollocks about rescues not re homing with children too, a convenient excuse. Lots of independents do.

HamaTime · 19/02/2016 22:31

I don't get how it is deemed perfectly normal to breed 2 dogs to get a load of puppies that look like/have the traits of the parents just so long as the parents are cousins look the same but it's deemed twatty to breed dogs with the hope that they will have traits from both parents if the parents are different. Some cross breed dogs are really cute and the idea that pure breed dogs are born on clouds of feathers and are sold for pennies to people who can see some sort of bigger picture rather than wanting a cute dog that fits in with their family is bollocks.

If everyone had cats instead this wouldn't even be an issue. Get cats people.

OttiliaVonBCup · 19/02/2016 22:32

I did consider a Great Danoodle just for the fun of saying Great Danoodle.

I have enough dogs as is though.

rusticmeadow that's been part of my conversion experience. Mine doesn't shed at all which I LOVE.

fwiw we got rescue cats.

and i have a MAJOR hankering for a rescue rat, but the OH says no. SAD FACE.

lastuseraccount123 · 19/02/2016 22:34

devere omg he is so cute. melts

Goadyflattery · 19/02/2016 22:34

And if everyone 'minded their own business and concentrated on their own lives' nothing would ever be done about animal cruelty or puppy farms.

rusticmeadowwildflower · 19/02/2016 22:35

All my cats are rescues too. Mine are older cats and are really really good - I'd recommend older cats to anybody. Kittens are adorable but the older ones are no trouble at all and do get overlooked.

MrsDeVere that dog is gorgeous! He looks mystified Grin
