On mn I mean. Just something I seem to be spotting more and more.
happy to be told I'm wrong in words of one syllable

I'm a female academic in a male-dominated STEM subject. Dear god, yes, I've been the subject of mansplaining - and in my younger days it genuinely made me doubt my knowledge. I've never had that level of condescension from a fellow female academic. These days I just wait for them to finish and then pretend they haven't spoken.

amarmai · 18/02/2016 19:16

why not walk away? That's what i do.

RedTitsMcGinty · 18/02/2016 19:19

I should do. I will do in future.

LineyReborn · 18/02/2016 20:08

I've been looking back at reviews of published works in my subject's main academic journal. Dear God, the mansplaining in those reviews - it is seriously gendered.

It makes me almost want to publish my next book under a non-female name.

Crabbitface · 18/02/2016 20:17

I thought that mansplaining went beyond the usual patronising "I know more than you" interactions and was specifically when men attempt to educate woman about women's experiences e.g. periods, feminism etc. As 'whitesplaining' is when white people 'explain' and describe racism to black people. So in fact no women don't do it (mansplaining) because it is about a more powerful group trying to define the experiences of the less powerful group. That was my understanding but I'm willing to be educated.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 18/02/2016 20:23

Yes have noticed. Not sure why on threads about scented sanitary products and a discussion on lady parts smelly some men have decided to tell us what we should do or reassure us that all is fine with how we smell

Hmm Hmm

But there you go girls you needed to be told

Sorry!!

COMPLETELY THE WRONG LINK

Ttry this one

sashh · 19/02/2016 04:37

DaddyDr

What you did was take a single example that has nothing to do with the subject being discussed, wrote your opinion on the one example you could think of, claimed it happens to you and that women do it too.

Read what Crabbitface put, then read your example - totally different situations.

DaddyDr · 19/02/2016 06:40

Wow, So out of this whole thread and some VERY strong opinions on the matter some fore, some against. Many calling the name sexiest, many saying it doesn't even exist and it's nothing more than a person being a twat. (I havnt stated if i think its a thing or not) The one you decide to kick off about is one that's 2 sentences long, that points out women also do this.

It also happens to be on the first (or second) page.
Two things strike me here, either you haven't read the entire thread......or its because my name obvious picks me out to be a man? Pick one!!!!!

And there I was thinking feminist are usually intellect, professional people. I guess there always must be an exception to every rule.

QuiteIrregular · 19/02/2016 07:04

And there's another gendered phenomenon demonstrated: (in my experience at least) men on the Internet assume women want their approval and will be sad if it is removed. Hence the tendency to revert to tropes like 'thank you to those on the thread who're being reasonable, unlike the rest' and 'I thought you were supposed to be...I guess I was wrong'.

Lweji · 19/02/2016 07:07

Sure, you said that women can be condescending and tell you things you know but they don't expect you to know. First, thank you for explaining that and dismissing the sexist phenomenon that undermines women in society.
Then, ask yourself why it's only about nappy changing that you felt women were condescending towards a man. And how that reflects how sexist our society is. But still to the disadvantage of women, that a man is not expected to know how to change a nappy. Third, imagine how that feels when it's everywhere for women and pretty much always from men.

I'd say it's like explaining what camo face paining to a woman even though she didn't ask what it was and replied to you "any face paint". Ring a bell? Wink

But imagine it happening frequently at work and whenever a woman wants to do anything, often including childbearing (not even just rearing).

I'd think you had got it from the reply on that thread, but here you are deflecting, rather than accepting that perhaps you had misunderstood the concept when you first posted. Or that you hadn't realised it happened to women.

But, always better to tell off women that admit you could possibly be wrong or mistaken, it seems.

Lweji · 19/02/2016 07:08

That took too long and it was to daddydr

Lweji · 19/02/2016 07:10

And, sorry,
... than admit...
Not
...that...

DaddyDr · 19/02/2016 07:53

As I explained on the face painting (mentioned) thread, but it seems some people are very selective about what they read and how it's read,
I explained myself with a link in the understanding I wasn't being very clear with my description, as opposed to the other person (whom I should add, I don't know if it's a man/woman/transgender) not understanding it.

So from that example being called Mansplaining one can only come to the conclusion that no man can EVER explain anything to a women, even if he thinks he's not being clear on said instructions because it makes him out as a Mansplanner that obviously hates all women.

Well I'm not sure how I'm going to answer my wife when she asks what I'm cooking tonight and how I intend to cook said food, I'd hate her to think I'm a woman hater.

I also hastern to add I never mentioned the word condescending. What I said was women also assume men don't know how to do stuff and therefore will go on to tell them stuff that the man may already know. But you seem to think that's me saying women are condescending; where if a man does it then it's mansplaning.

I guess I'm never going to "get it" I am a man, and I'm bloody happy in that fact. I don't understand the plight of how tough it is to be a women, but equally I'd say you're pretty good at letting me, and every other person in ear shot, know just how difficult life is. Well I say life is what you make it, don't go looking for difficulties. I've faced enough in my life, but I'm doing well now and that's cause I have done stuff about it.

I'm ranting on now I know......Blush

One more thing, let's ignore your posts directed at me for one second and also my last post and get back to my contention with sashh
Why out of all the posts on this thread does she feel most strongly offended by mine that doesn't once say that mansplaning isn't a thing? It doesn't say it doesn't happen, it doesn't say it's wrong to use that word, nothing. Yet that's the post she gets all uppity about.
I'm sure even you lweji the card carrying feminist (do feminists actually have cards, I'm serious on that question; would be interesting to know) must be a little perplexed by this??

Ha, Matilda it was an insight which arrived by confusion rather than careful thought - I have a reasonably androgynous first name, so occasionally online ppl mistake my gender. Found myself thinking 'But dafuq you think I care if you don't approve of what I said, why you talking to me like I'm on job probation or some...ohhhh!' And light dawned.

Okay I concede that offended might have been the wrong word, I should have said "why does she feel my comment suggests it's not a real thing (she does say that) and that my comment is saying I know more about feminism then she (again, she does say that)"
where as there a posts on here that do actually say those things she claiming mine say. I'm just a little bamboozled by it.
