To categorically refuse to allow the cat in the bedrooms

We just got a cat about 10 days ago. First time, finally giving in to near-constant demands for a pet. However I discussed this before, ON ONE CONDITION that the bedroom doors are ALWAYS closed and the cat is NEVER allowed in.

The first night she did meow outside our doors, not too loudly, not enough to wake you up if you're fast asleep. She has been good more or less since, though getting up to pee has become something of a nerve-wracking activity.

She is visibly happy to see us in the morning.

I am now under a constant pressure campaign to let her in the rooms.

My reasons: I don't want (so much) cat hair in our beds and clothes, your aunt got bronchitis which two specialists said was exacerbated from sleeping with a (very hairy Persian) cat, I had two bouts of bronchitis over the past two yrs, right now I am just done a bout of antibiotics for a blocked sinus/ear channel.

Their reason: she's sad and you're evil.

YANBU, although you'll need both a will of iron and a decent dollop of luck for you to achieve this

We successfully trained two cats to stay out of our bed (although not out of the bedroom - we had cat beds in there). Cat number three refused to play by the rules, and basically broke us down until we were too weakened to refuse.

dejarderoncar · 10/02/2016 19:25

Keeping them off the bed is one thing (I don't, I love their company!) but how the hell do you stop them using the computer keyboard as a shortcut to everywhere?
And then leaving all their hairs for me to try and extract before computer implodes.
Also, last laptop, nervous boy cat decided to mark as his territory when my back was turned, and poor computer never recovered.

ErgonomicallyUnsound · 10/02/2016 19:34

I work from home and the minute I get up to go to the loo he's in my chair, stealing the warmth Grin

limitedperiodonly · 10/02/2016 19:46

YANBU. I gave in with my cat in December 2014. It was really cold. I'm sure he'd have survived but he looked so pathetic.

I do shut him out of the bedroom at about 5am when he decides it's time for me to get up and bats me in the eye and pulls my hair. He also licks my face

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 10/02/2016 19:49

YABU to think you can get a cat to do anything it doesn't want to do.

coffeeisnectar · 10/02/2016 19:56

Sometimes one of the cats comes up for a cuddle when I'm in bed but when I put the light off she goes back down on her own. One of my girls comes up in the morning to get a cuddle and then follows me down where all three join forces to badger me for breakfast. Thinking about it, she may be the advance party sent up by the other two. "We're hungry, go and tap coffee on the head til she wakes up and then bring her down to feed us" :o

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 10/02/2016 20:09

I'd sooner have the cat in bed than dh.

Ours choose, Reuben sleeps on our bed mostly...at the foot, or if dh is not there he squooches up at the top next to the pillow! Faerie mostly likes her own company, but for badness she will go in and poke about in ds2's room, he is her favourite. Mostly she just wants to wake him up, but sometimes she'll settle on the bed. When she does I can hear her in there purring from across the landing in our room!

Fieryfighter · 10/02/2016 20:14

Yanbu. Our cats are not allowed in the bedrooms, I don't think it's hygeinic but more to the point if they've been accidentally let upstairs they drive me nuts purring loudly in my ear, one grooms himself soooo loudly, they fight on the landing, jump in and out of the bath, jump onto the windowsill opening the blackout blinds. I love my cats but want to kill them if they're upstairs so they're not allowed up.

mintoil · 10/02/2016 20:18

mintcat sleeps on my head Grin

joeyno1 · 10/02/2016 20:19

YANBU, it's your house and your choice, but cats tend to find a way... mine does anyway.
Not sure I completely follow the logic of being disgusted by a cat in a bedroom, but fine in the kitchen Confused

Beth2511 · 10/02/2016 20:19

Me and my cat have taken to spooning with a hot water bottle in the middle of us. He naturally wont go near the toddlers room unless i lock him out at which point he will deliberately wake her up to get my attention

Sallystyle · 10/02/2016 20:23

Well I have a dog who sleeps in my bed.

I don't think YABU for not wanting pets in the bedrooms though.

Mouseinahole · 10/02/2016 20:24

My cats are confined overnight and have no access to bedrooms. However they are allowed onto our bed on weekend mornings which we love and so do the cats.
YANBU at all

Looserella · 10/02/2016 20:27

Mine is not really allowed but only due to DH thinking it's disgusting. When he's away the cat is free to do what he likes. It's really lovely spooning a warm cat under the covers. Give it a try!

ijustwannadance · 10/02/2016 20:40

I love cats and have owned cats but they were never allowed in the bedrooms and didn't give a stuff. It's pretty grim to have a bed covered in cat hair. It's more to do with the owners than the cats as the cats don't really give a shit they have just been allowed to do it.

Gabilan · 10/02/2016 21:05

So long as the cat has a warm, dry place to sleep, it's your choice if that's the bedrooms or not.

I grew up with cats and dogs. My cats are great hot water bottles in winter. In summer they're usually out hunting at night, so to avoid mice etc I usually shut the bedroom door.

Generally I'm a fairly hygienic person and I've never caught anything from a cat or dog. Humans are germy fuckers though.

MyKingdomForBrie · 10/02/2016 21:08

No way at night, shut down stairs with food and their cat flap, otherwise they yowl outside our bedroom door and wake me up.

They do come and snuggle in the bed on weekend mornings/if I'm having an early night with a book..

madasa · 10/02/2016 21:37

I share my bed with two ragdoll cats and a puppy :)

JaceLancs · 10/02/2016 21:46

I have had numerous cats over the last 30+ years
Currently have 2, they are not allowed anywhere in house other than lounge kitchen and dining room
I have never done it any other way - they seem quite happy and spend a lot of time out and about or in front of the fire when at home

FlowersAndShit · 10/02/2016 22:14

I have a boycat who I got from a family member, around 2 years old. I have tried shutting him out of my bedroom as i'm not getting any sleep with his fidgeting, but he can open the bloody door! He throws himself at the door and pulls the handle. I had to give in as I live in an upstairs flat and neighbours probably wouldn't be too happy at the noise. Any suggestions? I've tried putting his bed in my bedroom but he still wants to be next to me. Previous owner let him sleep on the bed with him.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 10/02/2016 22:33

YABU. As an earlier poster said she is one of the family now. Every cat I've had has slept in my bed. We have 3 cats at the moment and at least 2 are there every night, occasionally all 3.

Savagebeauty · 10/02/2016 22:49

When we were kids in the sixties, the cats were never even allowed in the house. They lived in the coal shed

Dollymixtureyumyum · 11/02/2016 06:34

My friend ended up with cat hairs in her eye from the cat being on her pillow and lying on her. She got a horribly infected eye, it was a right mess.
She still lets the cat sleep on the bed though Hmm

Gabilan · 11/02/2016 07:04

Mine seem to avoid my head and pillow. I'd probably shut them out if they thought that was a good idea. As it is, they're just a hot water bottle/ alarm clock combo.

JapanNextYear · 11/02/2016 07:13

Previous cats pre DH, free rein, loved them sleepin on the bed. He's allergic so current cat stays out of bedroom, we keep the doors shut. About once a year cat will set up pitiful yowling if he's hungry and we've overslept.

Mostly though he just lurks outside bedroom door.
