to think that a ham AND cheese sandwich is a teeny bit extravagant?

I know, I know!

We had friends round for the day this weekend and lunch was a "make your own sandwich" type affair, all bits out, put what you want in it. There was cheese, ham, tuna, salady bits, pickles and sauces etc.

Now my friend Bob* had ham AND cheese in his sandwich Shock To me, that seemed like he was having two fillings in one sandwich - terribly indulgent Grin

*Name changed to protect sandwich eater's identity ;)

One of my favourite sandwiches is salami and peanut butter. Yum!

Notso · 02/02/2016 10:21

DH has a friend who didn't eat lunch throughout the whole of secondary school because his Mum refused to allow him to have ham and cheese in a sandwich, he had to have one or the other.

I don't really eat sandwiches but ham and cheese together or separate would be very low down on my choice or filling.

There was only tap water on offer.... rationed ... from a pipette...

Are you my DM?

She was gutted when one of my friends made a tuna sandwich and used the whole tin on one sandwich. This was in the 1980s though - everyone was poor then and it was a bit much really - one tin of tuna could easily make sandwiches for 2 or 3.

Even now though, she won't let my dad have cream and icecream on his apple pie.

It does seem a bit indulgent, but only if you have been brought up in poorer/simpler times.

As other posters have said, just look at the fillings in shop bought sandwiches and those on sale in the US. I don't really like sandwiches but my favourite shop bought one is pastrami, cheese and saurkraut on rye and if at home I only really have toasties.

2 favourites are tuna/onion mayo and cheese done in the breville - I do use a whole tin of tuna but have to share with the cats, half for me, half for them to share.

Or ham and cheese and then dipped in beaten egg and fried - yum!

I'm starving Sad

BoboChic · 02/02/2016 10:25

Ham and cheese is a sandwich combination available all over the world. I know, because it is my DD's absolutely favorite food and she makes a point of tasting multiple versions in every country she travels to :)

ewbank · 02/02/2016 10:25

It's utterly unacceptable and I'd have ejected him from my house then and there*

*caveat, may be acceptable on holiday, but only in Europe.

ElBandito · 02/02/2016 10:26

Do you eat your single filling sandwich whilst sitting on a spike?

BarbaraofSeville · 02/02/2016 10:29

A cheese and ham toastie in Spain is known as a bikini .

ewbank · 02/02/2016 10:31

In Germany they put a fried egg on it and call it Strammer Max.

Fucking oddbods.

murphys · 02/02/2016 10:34

Ham and cheese is surely the most common sandwich... Shock Well it is to me, but I cannot for the life of me understand why ds prefers only ham OR cheese. I keep telling him that must be a flaw in his thinking somewhere along the way, but its clear now..... you all have flaws in your thinking too Grin

And I am right about this one..... because there is even a sign up in my kitchen which says I am always right...... Wink Grin

Scone1nSixtySeconds · 02/02/2016 10:34

I am taunted by the idea of cheese and ham toasties now. And there is no bread in the house as a result of dh. :(

Gobbolino6 · 02/02/2016 10:34

I used to think this, until I married an American.

NeedsAMousekatool · 02/02/2016 10:35

DD won't eat solid cheese but she loves a ham sandwich with cream cheese in lieu of butter. Even better on a wrap.

murphys · 02/02/2016 10:37

I got so carried away there, I really wasn't finished saying what I wanted to.... Wink

Ds claims the best sandwich is a mixture of two items, that being cheese and Oxo spread (or Bovril) but never, ever Marmite.

Can I tell him there are like minded folk in the world?.... Wink. He will be pleased.....

Quietlifenotonyournelly · 02/02/2016 10:38

Ham, cheese with piccalilli or Chutney here. Soooooo extravagant Grin

NinjaClaws · 02/02/2016 10:39

YANBU. It should have been ham, cheese and coleslaw at the very least!
Mmmmmm.

NinjaClaws · 02/02/2016 10:40

Pickle lovers....have you tried Ballymaloe relish on bacon butties?
It's the dogs do dahs.

elephantpig · 02/02/2016 10:41

I've had a ham, cheese and beetroot chutney sandwich for the last few days on the trot! And it was on a baguette !

Taytocrisps · 02/02/2016 10:44

Ninja I was just about to mention Ballymaloe relish. It's fab.

PrimalLass · 02/02/2016 10:45

I would have stuck cheese and onion crisps on the sandwich too. With mayo.

Taytocrisps · 02/02/2016 10:45

elephant you've clearly lost the run of yourself completely.

Janeymoo50 · 02/02/2016 10:49

Cheese, ham, mayo and smokey bacon crisp sarnie here (with the rest of the crisps on the side). YABVU.

00100001 · 02/02/2016 10:49

I concur with tayto, elephant you clearly need to calm down dear!

When I was a kid, on Saturdays my mum would make a sandwich which contained:
Three slices of bread
Tinned tuna
Sliced tomato
Lettuce
Mayonnaise
Grated cheese
Sweetcorn

The sandwiches were MASSIVE and we had them with crisps and lemonade. It was the best ever.

But for school we could only have rubbish sandwiches including left over roast lamb with nothing else. Those sandwiches went in the bin.
