To think that this is the end of women's athletics?

fidel1ne · 23/01/2016 21:38

And women's international sport generally?

Transgender competitors will be allowed to compete as the gender of their choosing pre-operatively and after just one year of hormone treatment.

So I've googled again. The limit for women is also 10nmol/L. And there is some pressure to revise this upwards in fact.

So, in current testosterone terms, no difference.

I feel it must be more complex than that, undoing the developmental effects, but I really know very little about the science of it.

GarlicBake · 23/01/2016 22:59

Humphrey, the Olympics say that a male woman competitor must have less than 10 units of testosterone per litre of blood.

10 units is at the low end of normal for men.
Normal for women is less than 3 units.

TheFallenMadonna · 23/01/2016 23:00

The IAAF limit for female athletes, that is.

WilLiAmHerschel · 23/01/2016 23:00

Yanbu.

Cellardoor1 · 23/01/2016 23:00

This is disgraceful. It wasnt too long ago that female athlete Caster Semenya was banned from competing for a year until she could prove that she was a female. In fact the guidelines for the 2012 Olympics state that a woman can be stopped from participating in female events if she has testosterone levels within the male range.

So if it was acknowledged then that hormone levels do give an advantage, what is the difference now? This is completely unfair to biological women and will probably encourage some to use performance enhancing drugs so that they can compete on a level playing field.

lougle · 23/01/2016 23:00

Humphrey the NHS normal reference range for testosterone is Male: 10 – 30 nmol/L
Female: 0.7 – 2.8 nmol/L

The Olympic rules say that a transwoman must have serum testosterone levels of 'less than 10 for one year' prior.

That limit is almost 3.5 times above the normal range for women. That limit is above the range at which the NHS would prescribe testosterone to biological males who have low testosterone levels.

AyeAmarok · 23/01/2016 23:02

Why is it always fucking women that get sidelined for every fucking minority group that is so much important than a mere woman.

Yep. And

comfirmation of my theory that a woman is now "anyone who is not a manly man (by some arbitrary standard of manliness)."

Yep Sad

Cellardoor1 · 23/01/2016 23:02

Coldest I'm sure any female athlete speaking out about this will be labelled trans phobic

RufusTheReindeer · 23/01/2016 23:02

Fucking hell its getting worse, i didnt realise that about the testosterone levels

Fuckwits Hmm

MrsGradyOldLady · 23/01/2016 23:03

I'm really worried about the world my daughters are going to grow up in. I'm not so bothered about myself - I've had my time and managed to forge a good career. All the time female equality is being chipped away at. What's the future going to look like? Women being forced back to the fucking kitchen sink?

I'm sorry for swearing so much but this makes me so angry. It's just a constant chip chip chipping away to appease every other MALE minority group. Sod women because they count for fuck all.

Borka · 23/01/2016 23:03

Surely that means that all women will be able to have testosterone levels up to 10 nmol/L, regardless of whether it's naturally occurring testosterone or performance enhancing drugs. I mean, can you really say that women & transwomen are in the same category for athletics, but have 2 totally different acceptable testosterone levels?

And what about transmen? They can compete as male, but do they have to? What's an acceptable testosterone level if they continue to compete as female?

Pantone363 · 23/01/2016 23:04

Women are usually 3 Max

Men are usually over 10 minimum

Man only has to have level just under 10 to compete as woman for 4 years

Still a difference of 7.

Woman is fucked

Borka · 23/01/2016 23:06

Oh, took too long typing & I'm wrong about different levels.

It's still dreadful.

TheFallenMadonna · 23/01/2016 23:07

To be clear, the 10nmol/L maximum is also the limit for women. It's just much higher than the norm.

And the IAAF have 18 months to show that there needs to be an upper limit for female athletes at all.

SuffolkNWhat · 23/01/2016 23:07

Checks date.

Not April 1st.

Women, as usual, are being chucked under a bus.

Coldest · 23/01/2016 23:07

But if the women athletes agree to this that will be the end for any of them winning anything!

wickedwaterwitch · 23/01/2016 23:08

It's total bollocks

Pantone363 · 23/01/2016 23:09

Maybe we'll got our own woman Olympics. Events only born woman can take part in

  • Fastest tampon change
  • Mooncup shotputt
  • First contraction to birth race
Alibabsandthe40Musketeers · 23/01/2016 23:09

cellar I was about to say the same thing.

When you have groups who maintain to be 'for women' - I am talking about the WEP here - saying that they are including rights for transwomen in their manifesto and policies to the detriment of policies that prioritise biological women, it becomes very difficult to speak out.

VagueIdeas · 23/01/2016 23:10

comfirmation of my theory that a woman is now "anyone who is not a manly man (by some arbitrary standard of manliness)."

It's simpler (or worse) than that. A woman is someone who says they feel like a woman.

Justanotherlurker · 23/01/2016 23:10

I'm just being a thorn in the side for arguments sake.Ive had a few glasses so ignore me if you like. Although I actully think this is a wrong.

However, there was some discussion a couple of years ago on here with regards to men complaining that military entrance exams where being downgraded to enable more women to gain certification, there is a certain thought process that women should be able to compete in men's football for example.

BlueSmarties76 · 23/01/2016 23:10

So prsumably as a woman I could openly state I was going to take testosterone purely for performance enhancing purposes and providing I could produce documents illustrating levels of under 10 for the previous year I'd be allowed to compete as a woman?

If we are following that logic, what are they going to do next!? 3 categories of Olympics for men, trans women and women using performance enhancing drugs and a third category for women on no drugs? Because that's what you'd need to make it fair. BONKERS!!

Pantone363 · 23/01/2016 23:10

I really really want to know what would happen if a female declared herself male and tried to serve on the front line.

I'm pretty sure she would be told to get to fuck. Or back in the kitchen.

TamaraLamara · 23/01/2016 23:11

I'd like to see all female athletes boycott the Olympics in protest. Then they can just have male events & a smattering of M-F trams events.

Let's see how stupid the Olympic Committee look when that happens.

I doubt a mass boycott will ever happen, but it would be delicious.

fidel1ne · 23/01/2016 23:11

WEP are a huge disappointment.
