To think Miranda won't be funny in 10 years time?

I used to love Miranda. DD loved Miranda. I even took her plus a friend to see Miranda and had to wait a year after booking the bleeding tickets.

But I've just caught an episode (the one where she pretends to go on holiday) and it's just got a bit..... tired and dated. AIBU? I've got nothing against the girl. I think she was just a bit of a fad .

You need a hobby Dotty!

LittleLionMansMummy · 22/01/2016 14:50

Sorry, make that 12 episodes.

batshitlady · 22/01/2016 14:50

They made 12 episodes LittleLion !!

batshitlady · 22/01/2016 14:51

opps 'how emarrased am I'?? ( In Miranda voice )

SwedishEdith · 22/01/2016 14:58

Rising Damp is still funny, I think.

ComposHatComesBack · 22/01/2016 15:12

I caught the tail end of an episode of Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads the other day. Forgot how much I enjoyed that too. Same writers as Porridge.

Namechangenell · 22/01/2016 15:14

It's all so subjective and definitely shaped by your upbringing and cultural reference points.

I grew up in the north, in a similar area to Peter Kay. I am roughly the same age as him. I never get fed up of him. The things he makes jokes of are the things that were central to my upbringing. His lines could be coming out of my grandparents' or parents' or aunts and uncles' mouths. Conversely, my southerner (posher) DH just doesn't get it. At all. I loved Carshare, he could not see the appeal.

Many of these things are of their time. Same with Miranda, Gavin and Stacey etc. There really was a time when garlic bread was considered fancy (or at least, there was where I lived). That we look back at ourselves and laugh that this was even the case makes it all the funnier to me.

ComposHatComesBack · 22/01/2016 15:20

Yes, my southern-born wife dismisses the Royale Family and Early Doors as "too northern and too depressing"

The idea of trying to cobble money together to get a pint or cadge one of someone else is just an alien concept to her.

spiderlight · 22/01/2016 15:25

I adore Miranda. I can't imagine ever not finding her funny.

AlpacaLypse · 22/01/2016 15:27

I disliked 'Miranda' from the start. I also never found Miranda Hart's stand up routines particularly dazzling. She's definitely a one trick pony with her falling over jokes. However her performance as Chummy was a revelation - I had no idea she could actually act rather than gurn and make a tit of herself.

What I did find very funny was the television BAFTAs one year, she was nominated in two categories, one of which was regarded as a shoo-in - I think it was best female performance in a comedy, for 'Miranda' - and she was seen as having a pretty good chance at the other. In the event she didn't get either. The camera was on her face when Olivia Colman got it instead. I have never seen a candidate at an awards show look more sour grape-d than she did!

chrome100 · 22/01/2016 15:41

Well I have never heard of her. So clearly she can't be that funny.

LittleLionMansMummy · 22/01/2016 16:04

Haha batshitlady was that said whilst tripping over in a comedic manner in front of a handsome young man?

Owllady · 22/01/2016 17:12

I used to love the royle family but it makes me cringe a bit now Blush mainly because I worry my dh is turning into jim
I still love Gavin and Stacey :)
And Father Ted
And only fools and horses
Bottom

I love man down too. Filth Blush

Actually I like most comedy that isn't offensive
Actually I hate Mrs Brown Confused

MitzyLeFrouf · 22/01/2016 17:14

Oh I love Rev, had forgotten that one!

MitzyLeFrouf · 22/01/2016 17:17

My Family was a real head scratcher. Baffling enough that they made one series, but that they went on to make a further 847 series was just beyond my understanding.

Dancergirl · 22/01/2016 17:19

On the other hand, Fawlty Towers only did six episodes

12 actually. Love Fawlty Towers.

We love a bit of Miranda in this house especially my teen dds. I also love Only Fools and Horses, I could watch them over and over again, still funny. And The Vicar of Dibley is brilliant, dd1's getting into it now.

Agree about My Family although Kris Marshall is quite funny in it.

absolutelynotfabulous · 22/01/2016 17:29

I used to like Royle Family but it makes me cringe now. Rev is good. Also like Mrs Brown's Boys (I can see why it's not to everyone's taste..).

Fawlty Towers, Only Fools, One Foot-all comedy classics now. And the Good Life.

Some of the 70s stuff was good; some terrible. Anyone remember Steptoe? On the Buses? Are You Being Served? It Ain't Half Hot? Wolfie Smith? Terry and June? George and Mildred?

Likely Lads was brilliant too.

LittleLionMansMummy · 22/01/2016 17:32

Yes I did correct myself Dancergirl Smile

Fluffy40 · 22/01/2016 17:35

Just watch Father Ted instead!!

MitzyLeFrouf · 22/01/2016 17:38

I love Father Ted so much.

'Down with this sort of thing' and 'that would be an ecumenical matter' are endlessly quotable.

Sparklycat · 22/01/2016 17:40

It's never been funny.

newyear16 · 22/01/2016 17:40

I never found her funnny but then I don't like slapstick and clumsiness and falling over isn't the slightest bit amusing.

TheSnufflet · 22/01/2016 17:51

Miranda is as funny as an ovarian cyst. The only thing I ever liked her in was Hyperdrive, and that wasn't too funny either. As has been said, her entire shtick is "I'M A TALL AND NOT TERRIBLY ATTRACTIVE AWKWARD WOMAN! HAHAHAHAHA!" I always just assumed she was related to someone high up to get the gig.

Aaargh and now I've just remembered the horror that was My Family. Why, BBC, why?

DottyBlue2 · 22/01/2016 18:49

I don't know about you lot, but I've had a couple of Negronis (my new fav cocktail du jour or should that be nuit?) and tonight I am definitely going to kick Bishop Brennan up the arse.

MitzyLeFrouf · 22/01/2016 19:02

Oh I love a negroni. Pass one my way please. Smile
