To think Miranda won't be funny in 10 years time?

DottyBlue2 · 21/01/2016 23:18

I used to love Miranda. DD loved Miranda. I even took her plus a friend to see Miranda and had to wait a year after booking the bleeding tickets.

But I've just caught an episode (the one where she pretends to go on holiday) and it's just got a bit..... tired and dated. AIBU? I've got nothing against the girl. I think she was just a bit of a fad .

It's about as funny as Mrs Brown's Boys.

Which is about as funny as a broken leg.

RonniePickering · 22/01/2016 10:16

I find Miranda funny. It's well written and performed and features some very acute observation. Of course that sort of thing will always go over some people's heads.........

Grin Grin Jesus tonight that is funny Grin

RainbowDashed · 22/01/2016 10:17

Father Ted.

Comedy genius, right there.

celeste83 · 22/01/2016 10:19

I think Miranda is not very well written, a bit predicable and tries too hard to be funny. Although different sort of programme its a bit like Absoloutely Fabulous which i also found to be totally unfunny for the same reasons as above.

ComposHatComesBack · 22/01/2016 10:21

YouTube carpool karaoke, he's BRILLIANT

Are you the case for the prosecution or the defence here?

It was 12 minutes of him obsequiously firing soft questions to a boring celebrity whilst driving around and then singing tunelessly.

Brown nosing shite.

Pantone363 · 22/01/2016 10:24

Rod Stewart, Adele?

Wash your mouth out!

MackerelOfFact · 22/01/2016 11:09

Does anyone remember the awful, interminable BBC 'sitcom' My Family?

It went on for about 10 years longer than it should have done. It was painful. Then we had to suffer the son in those awful BT adverts to boot.

MissBattleaxe · 22/01/2016 11:15

My Family was dreadful. Great cast, piss poor so called comedy.

absolutelynotfabulous · 22/01/2016 11:15

My Family...agree completely. Even Zoe Wanamaker and Robert Lindsey couldn't rescue it.

And that awful Welsh dentist man-child: wtf were the Beeb thinking?

Wagglebees · 22/01/2016 11:26

Mrs Brown's Boys is the worst thing to ever be on tv. It's not funny or even likeable. It's just dreadful.

But I know lots of people who love it and have cried laughing at it and it gets the prime time Christnas day slot every year.

I really like the BBC three series Uncle, with Nick Helm and Daisy Haggard in it. Really loved Car Share which did actually make me laugh out loud which is rare. Rev was good too.

Owllady · 22/01/2016 11:29

Oh I still like Miranda but I love a bit of slapstick. The less realistic the better :o

Wagglebees · 22/01/2016 11:31

I used to dislike James Corden but I think he's pretty good on the late, late, show. Particularly like the segment where he takes over someone's shift for the afternoon. Take a Break.

DottyBlue2 · 22/01/2016 11:42

Father Ted is real. If you watch the late night Irish music TV channel on sky you'll see that the writers based it on fact.

Blimey. I started this thread randomly and didn't expect such a response! The thing that gets me about Miranda is that she repeats all her material. How many times have we heard the "When I roll over in bed my boob does a clap" routine? At least three times, say I. However, the Radio 4 House Party series was excellent.

The other thing that I have to say is that Clare Balding, Sandi Toksvig and Sue Perkins are national treasures.

Friday Night Dinner is brilliant as is Rev.
Peep Show was cringingly good.
I also loved Butterflies but then again I fancy 1970's Geoffrey Palmer
The Inbetweeners had some inspired episodes but the films were shite.
Episodes was good too and had the added bonus of Stephen Mangan

DottyBlue2 · 22/01/2016 12:53

Ohhh, Rev was wonderful!

I have submitted my tax return, thank you for asking. I have also informed HMRC that I am no longer self-employed/sole trader so I am now officially a DBAM (Does Bugger All Mum) and can swan around on Mumsnet completely guilt free.

I thank you.

^Looks to Camera

Falls Over

Says in Mrs Doyle accent: *Would ye like a cuppa tea? Oh go on. Go on. Go on! Go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on^

I think it's really funny, I know it's slapstick it but I don't mind that it still has my son and I in stitches, that and the thick of it. I love Malcolm Tucker!!!

celeste83 · 22/01/2016 14:14

My Family was good when the guy on BT adverts was on. It went downhill and very silly quickly after he left. The Inbetweeners films really are cack i agree. Father Ted is up there with the very best in my book. Brilliant dry humour. Along with Only Fools, The Office, early Peep Show. The best recent one for me is Peter Kay's Car Share.

BabyGanoush · 22/01/2016 14:16

Not watched it for age

Quite liked Miranda the first time around, she's utterly likeable

Love Rev

I find that some series which I thought were great at the time, have now dated a bit (at the same speed at which I have aged). Used to love Spaced, back in the 90s when I was 20 and lived somewhere rough in London, we all had flat shares etc.

Then I loved tge office, when I worked in my first office job, with a mad boss who used to lecture me on random life issues. I felt "The office" was lifted straight out of my own life.

But now these programmes mean nothing to me Sad

Same with "friends" meh...

rosebiggs · 22/01/2016 14:25

Yes Peep show is fantastic. Everyone knows a Mark and a Jeremy!

My ds2 is just starting to watch it. He watched the Interview episode in series 1 on youtube and he was trying to tell me about it, but he couldn't finish off his sentences he was laughing so much.

2rebecca · 22/01/2016 14:39

Agree that when a comedian's routine is all about them and their personality/ body shape then it becomes repetitive and boring.
OK you're big and clumsy, next joke?
I find the self deprecation thing rather depressing in a woman as well, too many women rely on self deprecation to make other people laugh.

helenahandbag · 22/01/2016 14:45

Yes Peep show is fantastic. Everyone knows a Mark and a Jeremy!

I'm definitely a Mark Blush

celeste83 · 22/01/2016 14:47

The last couple of series of Peep Show were not so great in my opinion.

batshitlady · 22/01/2016 14:47

Miranda overdoes the falling over -- 'oh how embarrassed am I in front of handsome man' bit. The Jokes are thin and the supporting cast aren't very good either. Has anyone seen Little Britain lately? That really is embarrassingly.

LittleLionMansMummy · 22/01/2016 14:48

On the other hand, Fawlty Towers only did six episodes, it's as funny today as it was then, and they should have made more! Probably the reason it was so successful though was that they didn't flog the proverbial dead horse.
