To think Miranda won't be funny in 10 years time?

I used to love Miranda. DD loved Miranda. I even took her plus a friend to see Miranda and had to wait a year after booking the bleeding tickets.

But I've just caught an episode (the one where she pretends to go on holiday) and it's just got a bit..... tired and dated. AIBU? I've got nothing against the girl. I think she was just a bit of a fad .

DS1 (16) watched an episode of Only Fools and Horses and was very meh about it but loves Blackadder.

Comedy is very individual.

Pipistrella · 22/01/2016 07:49

Sorry, I agree with some other posters, I tried watching it and it was painful. It's just not the sort of thing I can laugh at. I don't even like her.

SurferJet · 22/01/2016 07:49

She's a bit like Jo Brand - only has one joke. 'Oh I'm so fat - isn't it funny' oh I'm so big & awkward - hilarious!'
She's never made me laugh tbh, I find her a bit creepy for some reason? & in RL she'd never get the gorgeous guy, so I suppose it was fantasy as well.

southeastastra · 22/01/2016 07:51

lots of comedy is like that and doesn't age well. i find the young ones quite unfunny to watch on repeat but loved it at the time,.

NorthernLurker · 22/01/2016 07:55

I find Miranda funny. It's well written and performed and features some very acute observation. Of course that sort of thing will always go over some people's heads.........

Surferjet - what qualifies you to say who gets the gorgeous guys? Hmm

celeste83 · 22/01/2016 08:01

I've never found her funny to be honest.

Youcantmoancanyou · 22/01/2016 08:03

"She'd never get the gorgeous guy" - ffs.

Pilgit · 22/01/2016 08:06

I love Miranda. Can't stand Mrs Brown's Boys. Also find only fools and horses awful. Just goes to show that we all find different things funny and that's good as then there's variety on the TV and the world would be a very dull place if everyone was the same.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 22/01/2016 08:10

I liked her when she was the cleaner in Not Going Out which we loved, Tim Vine is hilarious.

Miranda didn't make me even half snigger.

Shows that stand the test of time:
Only Fools
Porridge
Yes Minister
The Good Life.

mollie123 · 22/01/2016 08:22

still would add

open all hours (the original with Ronnie Barker)
the two Ronnies
Victoria Wood - early stuff and acorn antiques
French and Saunders - early stuff

Catsize · 22/01/2016 08:22

People say I remind them of Miranda. Thanks to this thread I now take that as code for 'I can't stand you'! Grin Sad

mudandmayhem01 · 22/01/2016 08:22

I love Miranda, I love the fact she gets the gorgeous guy, because average or slightly overweight guys in films never get gorgeous girlfriends??

absolutelynotfabulous · 22/01/2016 08:23

I find her poignancy funny but the slapstick comedy doesn't do anything for me. Stevie is just irritating. But Sally Phillips and Patricia Hodge are class actors who can deliver anything.

I agree with still about the lasting comedy classics.

I think some shows are "of their time" too. I used to love The Office because it was fresh and original at the time; Benny Hill was of his time and even Alf Garnett was funny at the time.

ThursdayLastWeek · 22/01/2016 08:30

I like her, I'm not so keen on her show.

I do however love most of the comedy on channels like Gold.
I could happily watch Porridge, Only Fools, Dads Army, The Good Life over and over and over.

Modern British sit coms just don't seem to cut it.
For a while I preferred satirical/topical stuff on tv, but now I find if rather just listen to it in R4 instead!

breezeharbour · 22/01/2016 08:34

I remember Miranda first came out when I was at uni and my housemates were obsessed with it. I had to leave the room when it was on and my feelings haven't changed towards it. Same with Mrs browns boys.

WaitrosePigeon · 22/01/2016 08:35

It never has been funny.

She isn't funny. It's all very embarrassing.

RainbowDashed · 22/01/2016 08:47

I never understood how people could find Miranda funny, most of my RL mates love it, so I have found my people here . The awkwardness makes me cringe, possibly because I am quite awkward myself so when I see it in others it makes me shrivel up a little bit inside.

Agree with the list of comedy classics, Porridge, The Young Ones and Blackadder being up there at the top of my list.

LOVED Miranda Hart as Chummy though.

KERALA1 · 22/01/2016 08:50

Going against the grain we love Miranda. One of the few things we can watch altogether and everybody in the family likes.

rosebiggs · 22/01/2016 08:53

I didn't like the comedy show and I also don't like Call the Midwife, but I agree that she is very good in it.

MissBattleaxe · 22/01/2016 08:53

I loved it first time but it didn't stand up to a second watch. Surprisingly her stand up was very good indeed even though I was just expecting a rehash of the show.

YY to the Good Life still being funny. I also think The Office is still very funny and well observed. Also Patrick Baladi is in it, which never hurts. Smile.

rosebiggs · 22/01/2016 08:55

I can't stand Mrs Brown's Boys either.

I loved Only Fools but its not funny now. Also Black Adder unfortunately.

Porridge is still funny which is incredible as it was made in the 70's.
Father Ted is my fave comedy sitcom.

rosebiggs · 22/01/2016 08:56

Yes The Office is great.

Marcipex · 22/01/2016 08:58

I liked her in Call the Midwife, but all the 'I'm so big, I'm so clumsy, ' got tedious very quickly.

MissBattleaxe · 22/01/2016 09:00

Father Ted will always be funny. Fawlty Towers doesn't really stand up to rewatching though I found. Only Fools does, and I never get tired of watching the It Crowd. The Work Outing episode is a comedy masterclass.

Also, I had Miranda's book for Christmas a few years ago and it was just more stuff from the TV series. It was all self effacing rambling and "thrust" and "plunge" which sounds funnier written down than it was in the book!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 22/01/2016 09:00

I've never watched it. The tiny snippets I've seen didn't entice me in.

Other comedy shows I've never been able to watch:

Vicar of Dibley - can't stand it. My parents love it. These two statements are related! They saw The Royle Family with us once and it was excruciating because they just didn't get it at all. As Sparklingbrook says, comedy is a very personal thing.

Comedy shows that won't date (for me):
Fawlty Towers
Father Ted
League of Gentlemen (now there's an acquired taste if ever there was one)
Dad's Army
The Office (but a little of this goes a very long way)
