To have had a bloody good cry over the news about David Bowie this morning

Bit of a strange way to react to the death of a stranger I guess but I am such a fan of his. I kinda cried like a family member had died! In my defence I am pregnant so I could just blame hormones Wink

My alarm is set to go off at 7am but I was woken before then due to lots of texts and notifications coming through. I cried and cried, I've been a fan for over 32 years. I went to work and went through the motions but every time I think about it I get upset.

How can David Bowie be dead?

Pannn · 11/01/2016 15:52

ouryve - I'll take that from any of them as a starter.

Yanbu. I cried when I listened to Absolute Beginners on the radio this morning. I felt like a right wally, so glad I'm not the only one! I've been hoping to see him at Glastonbury for years now and it's a huge regret that I'll never get to see what would have been a spectacular headliner. Sad We're danced to his music on new year's eve and I intend to educate my ds in his music.

Jux · 11/01/2016 16:11

Born in late 50s, so Bowie provided a sound track to my youth. I have all the original early vinyls too, the ones from the 70s anyway. Hope they're not too scratched! RIP and (utterly inadequate) condolences to his family Flowers

Orange1969 · 11/01/2016 16:17

I'm sad he has died and feel sorry for his son and wife but I never liked his voice. There were better singers out there, but he was a one off and shall be missed by his generations of fans.

I met him in 1992. My boss had, in the past, worked for EMI and new David's manager. She and I were on a business trip to France and visited Mr Bowie and his manager on Mr B's yacht.

Mr B was perfectly charming and poured me a drink of orange juice. It was blood orange and he tried to convince me it had actual blood in it.

Oh, I do like to remember my glamorous past as I do my lowly dog walking job....

Orange1969 · 11/01/2016 16:18

knew

Savagebeauty · 11/01/2016 16:21

I'm about to open a bottle of champagne to toast him...my best mate is coming at 5 to watch Bowie DVDs from Old Grey Whistle Test onwards.
And cry. We saw the V and A exhibition 23 times between us. Sad

OnlyLovers · 11/01/2016 16:22

Let's be having the details, then, MrsDeVere...

LittleLionMansMummy · 11/01/2016 16:24

Oh how I loved the Goblin King.

BalloonSlayer · 11/01/2016 16:27

Pannn that was on my 7" copy of Life on Mars too. We thought it was so cool, tried so hard to listen to what he was saying. I assumed it was on all of them! (Blimey I don't know where it is, it might be valuable!)

We always loved it when people spoke on records. Like that bit at the start of Daydream Believer. I think we thought it wasn't "allowed" or something Grin

I feel sad too although I wasn't all that much of a David Bowie fan. But reading the obituary I was surprised at how many songs they mentioned that I thought "Oooh I loved that one!" Also feel sad as he had just released an album . . . he wasn't finished with his life or career!

RedToothBrush · 11/01/2016 16:29

Just a little update to my first post on this thread.

I posted that I had not heard off a friend who got me into Bowie in some time and thought that they had moved on with their life. I have been very upset about this of late as they haven't replied to a number of emails.

I emailed them this morning just saying thank you for those good times with Bowie.

I have just received a reply.

The first in over 9 months. Together with an apology for having not been in touch.

Floods. Of. Tears.

OnlyLovers · 11/01/2016 16:31

Oh Red. Smile I so hope this rekindles your friendship. Something good out of something sad.

Pannn · 11/01/2016 16:36

Balloon my LoM 7" is in a wrack of singles, all in white cardboard sleeves in a box in the loft. In no particular ordered way. There's hundreds. It will take for ever!

wasonthelist · 11/01/2016 16:51

Op YANBU that's up to you.

I have a few old vinyl Bowie records.

At the risk of being told off extensively, I didn't care for his later work, or for the way Ronson and Bolder got treated during and especially after Ziggy.

Nonetheless it is sad when anyone dies, especially in such circumstances.

grannytomine · 11/01/2016 16:54

On the news all the stuff about Bowie was followed by starving kids in Syria. Sort of put it in perspective. He had a good life.

Andrewofgg · 11/01/2016 17:05

Every cloud . . . the DM printed a vicious attack on him by his horrible ex and went to press before the news broke. They will probably apologise tomorrow!

MrsDeVere, that resoundingly wins the prize for Least Rock n Roll Story Involving a Rock Star In Their Pants Ever. Grin

RickOShay · 11/01/2016 17:36

He made me feel like it was ok to be different.
He was one of us.

comingintomyown · 11/01/2016 17:56

A great love of mine was obsessed with Bowie and so for years I was heavily exposed to all his music , thank goodness

Agree with all those who are not just mourning him but whole swathes of their past where his music was playing. And in my case realising how very long ago it was

PiqueABoo · 11/01/2016 18:02

"He made me feel like it was ok to be different."

Talking of which... sifted from amongst all the more vanilla celebrity tributes we had the initially very different Marc Almond, a very serious Bowie fan, in pieces this morning (you probably have to be a bit of an MA fan to get it, but I see some depth behind their likely unconscious choice of a couple of their words):

"It's not often I truly cry at the loss of an artist but I'm devastated. He meant so much. Goodbye David Bowie and our youth. We loved you. X"

"There will never be another that comes close. It's too much . Just can't take it in. Black day!"

somewheresomehow · 11/01/2016 18:31

I haven't shed a tear over the other 'celeb/musicians' but for some reason Bowies death has got me blubbing so Sad

tilliebob · 11/01/2016 18:41

I've not cried but I've barely cried over my dads death a few months ago. I am completely gutted though. I wish everyone would just stop dying yes I know that's stupid but it's where I am right now

OnlyLovers · 11/01/2016 18:45

It's not stupid at all, tillie. Thanks Brew
