To have had a bloody good cry over the news about David Bowie this morning

Bit of a strange way to react to the death of a stranger I guess but I am such a fan of his. I kinda cried like a family member had died! In my defence I am pregnant so I could just blame hormones Wink

comingintomyown sums it up perfectly for me.

Listening to golden years gave me hope at an awful point when I felt like I had none.

YANBU. Seem to have had a bit of a leaky eye all day. Sad,sad day.

Moln · 11/01/2016 19:08

I could never describe myself as a Bowie fan; I would never have bought an album, nor though to get a ticket for a concert. But I certainly liked a hell of a lot of his music. I also appreciated his talent and influence.

Now I felt saddened this morning and have been playing his music all day. So as you are a fan, of course, YANBU to cry.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 11/01/2016 19:09

Yup. A bit leaky here too. Last time I blubbed about a stranger was when Freddie Mercury died, I think.

This feels somehow outrageously wrong as well as sad.

Andrewofgg · 11/01/2016 19:18

The last time I wept for a stranger I was watching Winston Churchill's funerals, age 12, and my mother started weeping and it was infectious.

AnyFucker · 11/01/2016 20:09

I had a weep for Amy Winehouse.

Cooroo · 11/01/2016 20:14

I heard as I drove to work. I cried and put Hunky Dory in as loud as I could. Luckily didn't have an accident.
Bowie was my first serious music obsession. Space Oddity my first non-pop purchase. I remember playing Cygnet Conmittee to my DM and being astonished that she didn't seem to like it. Today my teen DD has been listening to and buying Bowie songs and posting 'why didn't I know how good he was?'

Yes I cried. He was a huge part of my teen life. And he just went on being good. And now I feel old.

Herrerarerra · 11/01/2016 20:18

I've been a total mess all day, and I've done nothing but listen to his music. The first of my music idols to go.

echt · 11/01/2016 20:19

I've had something in my eye, I must admit.

Being of much the same generation as Bowie, I grew up with his music, but the use of it the TV series "Life On Mars" made it come to life again for me.
"Jean Genie" now means the slo-mo dancing of off-duty coppers in a manchester disco.

Woodhill · 11/01/2016 20:20

Yanbu I felt upset when I heard this on the way to work today

tilliebob · 11/01/2016 20:22

Oh absolutely echt, I know exactly what you mean. I love LoM.

echt · 11/01/2016 21:25

In fact, this calls for a re-view of that episode. It's the one about police corruption, where our hero gets drugged and photoed. And the bad guy looks, bizarrely enough, like Benedict Cumberbatch's older and craggier brother.

It's overcast today, I'm on school hols...

I consider it a mark of respect.:o

SoleBizzz · 11/01/2016 22:20

Just watched David Bowie introduction to The Snowman.

"You see, he was a real snowman".

I believed him. Such a lovely voice and so handsome.

Lockheart · 11/01/2016 22:22

YANBU. I was born too late to ever see him in concert, but I saw the David Bowie Is exhibition three times at the V&A, and once in Paris. I was hopign that maybe he might tour again, with the two most recent albums and all, but knew he probably wouldn't.

When I saw posts on facebook this morning my heart stopped for a second. I've been busy at work all day but this evening have been watching Labyrinth and crying over Space Oddity Sad

BestIsWest · 11/01/2016 22:29

YANBU. I had a little sniffle on the train this morning when DH texted me. So sad for his family and friends. He was very much the sound of my teenage years. Heroes got me through some lonely times at university.

mumeeee · 11/01/2016 22:38

Yanbu. I'm another one who felt very sad and tearful when I heard the news this morning

lovestea · 11/01/2016 22:43

The stars look very different today.

HelenaDove · 11/01/2016 22:50

I was ok till just now when channel 4 played Life on Mars Sad

Pannn · 11/01/2016 23:00

and of course being all patriotic and stuff, and having a Brit and London boy have Team GB enter the Olympic Stadium in 2012 to his music.."We can be heroes, just for one day.." and what followed was fantastic. Cheers David.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 11/01/2016 23:04

Yes, I cried for Amy Winehouse too, quite surprised myself.

AnyFucker · 11/01/2016 23:06

that poor girl, she had no chance with some of the people she had around her

springscoming · 11/01/2016 23:10

I had a few tears in the car when they announced it on the 8 o clock news and played his music. He was a class act. I was never a big fan but his music was part of my life as a teenager in the 70s. It's a loss - as if some part of my own life/past is gone too. It's really hard to explain but I felt the same about Terry Pratchett and Willy Rushton. It's like a diminishing. I wish I could explain it better.

EachandEveryone · 11/01/2016 23:12

I'm watching Channel 4 now. I couldn't just pick one but Drive In Saturday would be in the top 3.

headexplodesbodyfreezes · 11/01/2016 23:12

I've been a bit teary a few times today. He's the first stranger I've done that for and I suspect he may be the last. Such a unique talent. RIP.

headexplodesbodyfreezes · 11/01/2016 23:14

spring I know just what you mean Flowers
