to be irritated by people being entitled (some would call it cheeky) when advertising for items wanted?

Just seen one today on a local Wanted board. Someone wants a fairly expensive item and has said "I'm a teacher so would be grateful if I could get this for a low price".

Wtf?

Wtf has being a teacher got to do with it, unless she genuinely believes teachers are somehow more deserving than other folk?

Its been bugging me ALL day it has Grin

as i said, you don't KNOW it isn't needed for teaching.

M48294Y · 10/01/2016 17:37

Oh hello again Blue.

What makes you think I don't KNOW it isn't needed for teaching?

How on earth could a cottage holiday be used for teaching?

SoupDragon · 10/01/2016 17:42

I would have thought what the fact they said "I'm a teacher" and not "I need this to take some of my more deprived pupils away for a much needed break" is a clue that is for personal use.

Blue14 · 10/01/2016 17:52

I don't think you have much idea how much travel teachers can be required to do to collect information, photos, samples, measurements, meetings, experiments, risk assessments, primary sources, etc etc etc, often at our own expense. I've spent several days travelling so far this year, for specific photos required in student portfolios and for risk assessments most of all. But there is all sorts of reasons it could be required for a teacher to do this, and like a lot of resources, they are at personal expense of the teacher.

StrugglingFool · 10/01/2016 17:57

Blue... behave!!! Lol

M48294Y · 10/01/2016 17:59

Oh Blue, I see. You are one of those posters. You started the thread about bleach too. What a good day's sport you have had.

ignorance, M4829. Just cos you don't realise it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. You might be deeply shocked at the extent that teachers are exploited. What exactly is your issue with my complaint about antibacs? ?

Blue14 · 10/01/2016 18:06

You have NO WAY of knowing if this request is needed for work purposes or not.

You have NO WAY of knowing either Blue.

The way it works on Mumsnet is that you generally assume the op is not lying (unless you think he/she is a troll) - and base your answers on the information the op has given you. Of course you can disagree with the op, that is a given, that is fine. But to play devil's advocate to the extent that you accuse the op does not know what they are talking about just makes for pointless exchanges which are tedious as fuck.

Heh, there's an ad on a wanted site on my FB where the poster is asking for Bump Beds, preferably free.

I've chuckled about that all day Grin

Blue14 · 10/01/2016 18:20

no, I have no way of knowing either, but I never said I did.

Vedamakesthebesttoast · 10/01/2016 18:21

Hmm blue. I'm self employed and often have to source materials and travel distances to collect things at my own expense, I'm not about to start posting for things for cheap using my job description as justification for wanting discounts... Where will it end? Plenty of people have to go above and beyond they just don't start pity parties about it.

Now back to my anecdote... He just expected a reckon lift with no prior arrangement! Cheeky fecker

Vedamakesthebesttoast · 10/01/2016 18:22

Feckin not reckon

Blue14 · 10/01/2016 19:02

veda, what is your point? this teacher may have to travel for work. You don't know if she does, or she doesn't. that is what I'm saying. What does that have to do with other people also needing to travel for work and pay for their own resources?

mypoorbottee · 10/01/2016 19:08

Yep, cheeky fuckers everywhere. When I get asked if I can deliver or post (and I really don't want to), then my standard answer is - Delivery £5 per mile - Postage £500 flat rate.

SoupDragon · 10/01/2016 19:39

I think trying to link a holiday cottage to a possible need to collect some kind of info for work is grasping at straws somewhat.

Vedamakesthebesttoast · 10/01/2016 19:43

Already made my point....

ethelb · 10/01/2016 19:43

Im wondering if the teacher does need it for a school and hasn't explained it very well. They could easily need appliances like washing machines etc for a school.
I have given up on freecycle etc after experiencing freeloaders, which is a shame as I have had some genuine seeming users who I have given stuff to.
That said I do think there is a small problem with givers having predetermined ideas of neediness which they cant verify and don't vocalise. The alternative would be a return to the bad old days of the poor waiting to be handed stuff rather than vocalising genuine need.
I remember pre-internet my granny informing the local priest she had a dining table set she needed to get rid of which she wanted to give to 'the poor of the parish'. Sure enough a young couple with a couple of children turned up to collect it a few days later and were v grateful. Tbf my Granny was perfectly civil and helpful and thanked them for taking it away. But it struck me as a bit patronising.
Now people are able to control this kind of charity themselves a bit better in a more empowering way.
If you really want them to go to the needy then perhaps donate them to Emaeus or DE Paul?

OhforGodsake · 10/01/2016 19:43

Biscuit for blue

maggiethemagpie · 10/01/2016 19:44

I don't mind them asking, but I put a nappy changing table on freecycle once (wasn't worth much and it was a bonus to not have to through it out) and the person who came to collect it didn't even say thank you. Now that did get my goat.

Vedamakesthebesttoast · 10/01/2016 19:44
Hmm
M48294Y · 10/01/2016 19:52

ethelb - I am intrigued as to how a teacher might need a week's holiday in a country cottage for herself, her dh and her dc and that somehow be related to her job? Can you elaborate?

OP posts:
ethelb · 10/01/2016 19:53

Just saw the teacher wanted a cheap holiday let. Wtf!
