Hello all- I'm pretty sure I am BU to ask but I was wondering- have you ever known someone on MN was talking about you? Or have you been caught out on here referring to Someone who knows you in RL? I'm a nosy begger I know but some of the stuff on here I think (surely) someone would know? Ps new here and loving it - apologies in advance if this isn't appropriate chat :)

MotherofFlagons · 29/12/2015 20:29

Not so far, but I'm pretty careful about what I post and change a few details and or NC to avoid obviousness. Plus no-one knows I use MN.

Notasinglefuckwasgiven · 29/12/2015 20:30

I'm easily identified. But I'm not a liar or a trouble maker and I'm exactly the same in RL so I don't care. Apparently there's someone in Glasgow really similar to me except for the company they work for and sibling different Grin so I could bluff it if needed.

AwfulBeryl · 29/12/2015 20:32

Shock MrsDevere. That sounds fucking harsh, it wasn't Olivia was it?

AwfulBeryl · 29/12/2015 20:32

DeVere - sorry.

ghostspirit · 29/12/2015 20:34

there is someone in rl who knows im on here and she knows my mn name to. i dont know hers. she probably sees my posts/threads now and then. but we never talk about them in rl.

im quite sure i could easy be picked out though. as im sort of an open book on here.

IamtheZombie · 29/12/2015 20:35

BikeGeek: "two sides to every story".

There was a thread a little while ago where the situation sounded very familiar (barring tweaks and change of minor details) and Zombie had to remove her hands and stick them under her arse to prevent herself posting just that.

FondantFancy66 · 29/12/2015 20:37

I spotted somebody. I was naughty and went to look up her other posts. Stopped myself from reading them though - I realised quickly that she only posts about one particular subject, one which I know is difficult for her to deal with (bad personal situation.) so I realised that this is where she comes for support and to let off steam. I won't tell her I know, and I'll never look for other posts by her.

MrsJayy · 29/12/2015 20:38

HQ sound scary

Imfinehowareyou · 29/12/2015 20:38

I recognised a close family member on here. They were getting A LOT of sympathy on their post which made sense with the info in the OP. I knew that LOTS of relevant info had been left out to show my relative in the best light. It taught me a lesson to remember that there are 2 sides to every story when I read other posters' threads.

I've been spotted a couple of times, and I'm glad the posters spoke up, because we've become good friends in RL as a consequence. I don't think I post much about specific arguments etc though- I generally feel quite baffled by the sheer amount of argy-bargy some MNers can get into just riding a bus.

ghostspirit · 29/12/2015 20:46

this thread is scary... someone might pop up and say i know who you are... and me yep me to

TheoriginalLEM · 29/12/2015 20:49

I know of a couple of people who have been 'outed' on here and it has caused them alot of personal strife (i don;t know them in rl just from here).

I try and keep anon as i can but do worry that i post too many details sometime.

Im not sure if id want to know if someone recognised me, there are a few people in RL who i wonder if they are on here or not and try to think who they would post like.

I think I've been recognised under a previous name. Someone said something to me in RL that made me think SHIT!

TheoriginalLEM · 29/12/2015 20:52

Mrs DeVere, i think if that had happened to me i would have told them to stick their site up their backsides and defected to the darkside! (just don't say cuntworms!). I am actually outraged by that, you are one of the most considered posters on here, what did they think you were trying to achieve other than sock puppetry?

You don't think they thought you were Jeff do you?

IamtheZombie · 29/12/2015 20:53

BOF, you may want to pop on to this thread:

Brenda, you didn't get a £100 voucher, did you? Grin

gBean · 29/12/2015 20:55

I was recognised by a drawing i did of a whisk. Seriously. This is what my life has become. I used to be cool.

My dd always recognises me, even if I change names or try to change my style.

My former colleagues recognise me.

I know dd's original username but not if she changed/changes it. I don't know my former colleagues' usernames.

I am conscious of saying far too much on MN but I get bored with television programmes and just type away...

CherryPits · 29/12/2015 20:59

I have identified two people on here. One was a long, long time friend who was going through a divorce. I know her writing style very well from years of writing emails (after I left the UK) and I knew her situation, so when she posted about what she and her DH had said to each other, it was obviously her.

Another time I'd read on here about someone whose neighbor had buggered off with some toys of their kids which they'd borrowed (moved away) and everyone had said "contact her and get those toys back".Then I was in the UK over the Summer a couple of months later at a sort of old friends get-together and one friend said this had happened to her (named the same toys). So it was obviously her. She still hadn't done anything about it!

And finally I was outed by someone on here who was I think searching for me and knew a specific story about how I met my DH. She asked everyone to write about how they'd met their DH and I stupidly said. Then she vanished / name changed but still knew who I was.

But I've long since name changed so thats ok.

God this is a long post. I hate reading long posts. So boring.

ghostspirit · 29/12/2015 21:00

devere i thought it seemed odd. if you had said it happend on the other site i would probably have believed it without a thought

BitOfFun · 29/12/2015 21:01

Cheers Zombie.

UndramaticPause · 29/12/2015 21:02

Who was the police officer (think that's what her occupation was) who was outed quite spectacularly and hq had to delete her entire history from here?
