Hello all- I'm pretty sure I am BU to ask but I was wondering- have you ever known someone on MN was talking about you? Or have you been caught out on here referring to Someone who knows you in RL? I'm a nosy begger I know but some of the stuff on here I think (surely) someone would know? Ps new here and loving it - apologies in advance if this isn't appropriate chat :)

Have recognised two very detailed and specific threads from parents at different schools I've worked in. One SN and housing related and one which was a very complicated Social Care case. They both needed and got good advice and there was no need for me to comment.

So if you share the same WIFI connection as another poster, you will have the same IP address and MNHQ will kick off?!

What about if you and your DP are both MNers? ShockConfused

... or if you've lent your wifi password to your neighbour!

pieceofpurplesky · 30/12/2015 02:12

I recognised an ex pupil on a silly names thread as she named two people in her year that had silly names ...

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 30/12/2015 02:16

MN, nor for that matter, anyone else, can't tell who is actually using a particular static WiFi address.

When WiFi was first a thing that was one of the reasons we were told to secure it by a password and not to share the password with a neighbour. At the least problematic the neighbour uses up all your monthly allowance and at its worst neighbour is accessing sites which involve burly men in uniform doing an unannounced dawn raid on your house.

Conversely, I am always amused when someone puts up a piece of information so utterly nondescript and then fret they might have outed themselves 'I'm in my thirties and I work in an office in London (oops, hope I haven't outed myself here)'

Fitzers · 30/12/2015 06:20

Yes I've twice recognised posters. Once in another forum and once here. Both post very specific details, the first poster about her children and the second about a nasty divorce. I assume both know they are easily identifiable and don't care.

I haven't contacted either to say I recognised them as I don't know them particularly well and I don't think they'd be bothered.

ComposHatComesBack · 30/12/2015 07:09

I did have an anxiety dream that I'd inadvertently changed my mn username to me real name. It was a pretty realistic dream so I had to check I hadn't.

Compos I've had a very similar dream too! I was sweating in fear when I woke up Blush
I'm probably very easy to recognise... And I've been known to have a right whinge on here as well! But it's nothing I wouldn't say to someone's face if I really had to so it's fine Smile

Alohamora · 30/12/2015 11:09

MrsC it wasn't you but it was very similar to what you described. What are these men thinking when they crash onto threads?!

TheFormidableMrsC · 30/12/2015 11:18

Alohamora, I am amazed that they do! I am not sure what goes through their heads. My ex just made himself look an utter arse. He also wrote something that was so blatently awful and untrue in relation to my DD that the post was immediately taken down. Not sure what he was trying to achieve, there was absolutely nothing he could possibly say that would have justified what he had done. Very odd indeed!
