DS glued to the poxy thing. He is 15 a good boy. Does go out and see mates so sociable. Does not bring me amy trouble. Studies hard at school. Somim very lucky. But when he is on that thing, I call it 'the machine'. He plays GTA with mates and all you can hear is him shouting out ya mother fucker" or fucking get ouuut my way or oi you ya silly prick etc etc.

I have spoken to my friends about this and work colleagues and they say their sons are the same Confused
Would point out does not act like this when not on play station.
AIBU in wanting to launch the fucking thing out the window or accidentally on purpose cut the wires. He has been on GTA for about a year. Drives me nuts. And when I go flying in his bedroom to tell him off he goes mad shouting at me. As I said only behaves like this when on that poxy 'machine'

Yes, I have two that are just the same. also 15, also play GTA. I know it is an 18 but their dad checks out the games first and decides if they're suitable, and set ground rules if anything is dodgy, or doesn't buy it.

Yes, they get bad-tempered, yes there is a bit of shouting, a bit of swearing, but nothing excessive, nothing I would say myself in frustration when the children aren't around.

If it's the swearing that bothers you, you should be aware that teens speak three languages - home, school and mates. You're hearing mates language. As long as you talk to him about it and he understands it's not really socially acceptable in all situations then I'm sure he's as 'normal' as the next lad.

JakeyBurd · 29/12/2015 01:32

wouldn't say myself!

bloodyteenagers · 29/12/2015 01:41

Haha he just does the races.
Bollocks he does.

Did he also tell you that to race you have to unlock them which means game play.

You don't want him to play the game, you don't buy them.
You don't want him to listen to others through the headset swear then change the wifi password.
You want to be a parent, set up the parental controls.

No kids aren't the same as they used to, because a lot of parents cannot be arsed, just buy technology and don't put any controls and buy any game because apparently all their mates have it... My mates were doing Coke at 15, by that logic my parents should have been buying me Coke.

AlisonWunderland · 29/12/2015 01:50

Am I the only one who sees the irony in the thread title when the OP is complaining about her son's bad language?

babyboomersrock · 29/12/2015 02:10

No, I answered your question, that's all. You possibly think that I'm too old to know what modern teenagers are like but you'd be wrong.

I'm out, though.

Seriouslyffs · 29/12/2015 03:14

My 15yo has had it since he was 14. It's in the living room- only TV and there's usually someone else around.
He doesn't play much or swear at it, no OP.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/12/2015 03:23

I know it is an 18 but their dad checks out the games first and decides if they're suitable, and set ground rules if anything is dodgy, or doesn't buy it.

So their dad checked out GTA, with it's violence towards women, and said it was A OK. www.huffingtonpost.com/malika-saada-saar/grand-theft-auto-v-and-the-culture-of-violence-against-women_b_6288528.html

Pobspits · 29/12/2015 03:31

Id confiscate the game

I would read the riot act at anyone of any age using that expression in my house and generally swearing as routine..

Mine isn't a teenager now but it wasn't that long ago he was. He didn't behave like this.

Oh and nice to know that the prostitutes aren't the seedy sort. I might have taken the opportunity to develop that discussion.

araiba · 29/12/2015 04:14

GTA is great fun

The game is not about shooting prostitutes. You can shoot policemen too. or run them over and steal their police car. You can do all sorts including racing.

My level of swearing goes up considerably when playing competitive computer games with my friends.

TaliZorah · 29/12/2015 04:55

Right this thread is absolutely OTT. I played 18 games below 18 as did everyone I know. Everyone. None of us have raped prostitutes btw.

OP swearing at games is normal. I do it. Everyone I know who is a gamer does it.

FlatOnTheHill · 29/12/2015 09:01

Tali
Ive been told by other parents their kids swears on them. I just think ds goes over the top at times. I think as you say so many over the top on here too. Raping prostitutes is something im sure ds has not done

OP posts:
FlatOnTheHill · 29/12/2015 09:06

And for the record im not naive. I know you shoot people to get in cars etc.
It is part of the game.

OP posts:
notquitehuman · 29/12/2015 09:07

There's rape in GTA? That's weird. Played the series a lot and I've never come across it.

I think it's normal to swear while you get into a game. It's cathartic. But it's your house and your rules, so if you don't find it acceptable then tell him.

LordBrightside · 29/12/2015 09:10

Give the kid a break. He is relaxing, having fun and harming nobody. 15 year olds swear, that's just reality and who cares?
As for the game being an "18", this is the real world. In a year's time he'll be able to work, get married, join the military and pay taxes.

Just leave him alone.

FlatOnTheHill · 29/12/2015 09:56

Lordbright
I think you are right.

and you all think that is ok Confused^^

LyndaNotLinda · 29/12/2015 10:12

Over my dead body will DS have GTA when he's 15. Because I'm the parent, I get to choose.

That's how parenting is supposed to work I believe.

Nanny0gg · 29/12/2015 10:12

Lordbright I think you are right.

There you go, OP.

The validation you were waiting for.

AndNowItsSeven · 29/12/2015 10:12

Flat is this thread done kind of wind up? If not take the game of your child and act like a responsible parent.

AndNowItsSeven · 29/12/2015 10:13

Some!

gabsdot45 · 29/12/2015 10:15

You're the parent, you can lay down the rules. IMO you only have yourself to blame for letting him play an adult game in the first place. Replace it with Fifa.

AlisonWunderland · 29/12/2015 10:19

This thread reads like the 15 year old son is the OP, rather than the mother

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 29/12/2015 10:22

I do have some flexibility around age certificates of films and music. Dd is 15 and has been watching some 15 rated films since she was 14, depending on the content which I check beforehand on the IDMB website.

However there is quite a gap between a 14 year old and the recommended playing age of 18 here.

Does your ds watch 18 certificate films? I do understand what it's like to have a teenager, but ime they need boundaries and guidance as much, if not more so, than younger children.

You have said that he is mature but his inability to self regulate his behaviour after playing (swearing, shouting at you, moodiness) really shows his emotional maturity isn't fully developed. That's why I would avoid GTA.

My teen is actually pretty mature. She shows that in the way she listens to advice and guidance about what is/isn't suitable for her.
