DS glued to the poxy thing. He is 15 a good boy. Does go out and see mates so sociable. Does not bring me amy trouble. Studies hard at school. Somim very lucky. But when he is on that thing, I call it 'the machine'. He plays GTA with mates and all you can hear is him shouting out ya mother fucker" or fucking get ouuut my way or oi you ya silly prick etc etc.

I have spoken to my friends about this and work colleagues and they say their sons are the same Confused
Would point out does not act like this when not on play station.
AIBU in wanting to launch the fucking thing out the window or accidentally on purpose cut the wires. He has been on GTA for about a year. Drives me nuts. And when I go flying in his bedroom to tell him off he goes mad shouting at me. As I said only behaves like this when on that poxy 'machine'

What policy have I broken? I haven't insulted you anywhere or "troll hunted" you by searching your posts or anything

Oh, please- can I remind you what you said. I think you're an elaborate troll to be honest

TaliZorah · 29/12/2015 19:53

Lynda what an ageist comment. You don't know better than me because you're older. I'm not going to not comment because someone older said something therefore must be right.

I find MN unbelievably hoity toity and uptight. Despite that you can sometimes get good advice and some posters are down to earth and decent, so I just deal with the annoying part.

Hotpatootietimewarp · 29/12/2015 19:54

whois yep there is that but in relation to this thread ops DS isn't mature enough to be playing it if he can't control his temper or curb his swearing when asked

TaliZorah · 29/12/2015 19:54

Lass that's not troll hunting troll hunting is going through someone's posts and tripping them up. I don't think it's against the rules to say you think someone is trolling? If it is then must be a widely broken rule I've seen lots say it

Floggingmolly · 29/12/2015 19:56

You've got that completely arse about tit, Tali...

itsmine I haven't said she can't say it. Just that it was an ageist comment. It was. I defend her right to say it.

Anyway I've given my opinion, OPs son isn't a horrendous fiend he's a normal teenager.

Blaaahdeblahdeblah · 29/12/2015 20:10

TaliZorah I get you. I also think there are a lot of hand wringing, worrying parents on MN. If you have brought your child up to use common sense and know right from wrong then you're doing okay. Swearing, in moderation, is the least of worries to have.
There but for the grace of God go I, as the saying goes. I have experienced adults, who as children, had this 'perfect parenting', believe me it does not protect them from the realities of life.
A little dose of 'real life' goes a long way in preparing teenagers for what's to come.

BitOutOfPractice · 29/12/2015 20:14

I don't think shouting motherfucker and swearing aggressively at anyone is "swearing in moderation". And I can assure you I'm not the pearl clutching type

TaliZorah · 29/12/2015 20:18

Blaaah exactly. Seems a lot of pearl clutching and over the top types who don't live in the real world.

No one I know, bar one particular person, would moan about someone swearing at a game

Blaaahdeblahdeblah · 29/12/2015 20:20

Can't we all accept that people parent in their own way and that we can only see how well we have done this when our children have become adults?

That's me had my tuppence worth, peace out everyone Smile

myotherusernameisbetter · 29/12/2015 20:24

I must be an anomaly becasue I don't have a problem with my teens playing the games and I was brought up around swearing, but I don't tolerate it in the house by my teens and certainly not at me. I don't think it's common or means anything in particular, I just don't think it's necessary on a day to day basis. I do accept that sometimes you do it out of a reaction though and it takes you by surprise. i.e. dropping a cup of coffee all over the floor might be met with a ffs or fuck-off.

itsmine You have just highlighted how topics discussed on here are so polarised. There is middle ground that can be found with everything.

I don't remember saying anyone was hoity toity Confused

TaliZorah Tue 29-Dec-15 18:19:49

I definitely think this is generational.

TaliZorah Tue 29-Dec-15 19:53:36

Lynda what an ageist comment.

:o :o :o :o

TaliZorah · 29/12/2015 21:35

Lynda how is it ageist to suggest the older population have more of an issue with swearing than the younger population?

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/12/2015 21:43

It's got quite a fun story line and it really isn't all about killing prostitutes. Well, as long as it's not ALL about killing prostitutes. I mean, some uptight people might think than any violence against women is too much but I suppose that's just pearl-clutching.

I posted on Feminism Chat recently about violence against actual live human prostitutes. It is rife and really, really horrifying. I tend therefore to have less tolerance for violence against marginalized women as entertainment.

Hotpatootietimewarp · 29/12/2015 21:57

I'm certainly not pearl clutching, I just don't think GTA is an appropriate game for a 15 year old and in particular this 15 year old due to not being able to control himself. I've seen what's in these games so I'm not just saying it.

I also know that there is worse things that could be going on but frankly I don't care, I will not abide by swearing in MY house by MY children or any visiting children whether they are nearly adults or not. What you do in your own house is up to you

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 29/12/2015 22:02

Why do you think younger people are less likely to be bothered about swearing ? Swearing as a matter of course is aggressive and intimidating.

If that is not what one has been brought up around I don't think it matters whether you are 22 or 52.

You seem to be overlooking many MNetters were in their teens and early 20s in the 60s and 70s -a time which enjoyed a revolution in cultural and sexual attitudes yet you have this notion it's age rather than good manners which means we object to gratuitous swearing.

MrsTP's points are spot on.

myotherusernameisbetter · 29/12/2015 22:08

I thought the comments about the older posters knowing better than younger ones were what the ageist comments were all about, and I say that as an older person :)

TaliZorah · 29/12/2015 22:09

Lass
I wouldn't say swearing is aggressive. And because I've seen it. You only have to listen to young people's conversations and compare to the elderly. There is more swearing amongst younger people. Young people in general do not find swearing as rude as old people do

And it definitely isn't intimidating, that depends on context.

Rdoo · 29/12/2015 22:09

There is no killing prostitutes in the story line (or side missions).

From memory, one woman gets killed during the story and you don't do it, it happens in a cut scene. You are required to kill hundreds of men during the story line though. Is that ok for you or does it get in the way of your pearl clutching?

wickedlazy · 29/12/2015 22:11

Haven't rtft. I would take the game of him for a week, and if he can't stop the shouting and mucking about next time, then a fortnight.

It's the football effect, when football fans go mental at crucial moments in the game because they're so engrossed they forget themselves. I would try to knock it in the head now.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/12/2015 22:21

'In GTA V, a gamer can purchase a woman (or is she a girl?) to perform a menu of different sexual acts that he experiences in first person. After purchasing the woman/girl, the gamer can choose to kill her -- and actually is incentivized to kill her to get his money back.' HuffPost disagrees with you Rdoo.

Clearly you can kill a prostitute.
FlatOnTheHill · 29/12/2015 22:57

Why is everyone picking on Talizorah? He/she has given a good input on here as have you all. Why does there have to be arguments?
Thank you all for comments. DS on been playstation GTA. Im going to chill out about it. But have told him if i tell him to kurb the motherfucker and prick shouting to a minimum then im happy for him to play it.
