To turn up at hospital with toothache? I can't cope with the pain anymore

VaticanAssassin · 22/12/2015 18:14

I am booked in for an operation to remove 2 back teeth, which has to be done under GA because they need to cut into my gum and remove in pieces because they cracked while eating a while ago.
But the operation date is not til February and i can't cope with the pain anymore, physically and mentally losing my mind with it- I'm taking Tramadol, 30/500 Co-codamol, Ibuprofen, Aspirin and Naproxen and still having stabbing pains in my face, jaw and ear, throbbing in my gum, and blinding pain.
I haven't eaten in 5 days because I can't put any pressure in my mouth at all, so just having warm cup-a-soup, and warm water.

Taken a full course of antibiotics, but still in fucking agony and feel totally useless and depressed, I'm going to ruin my kids Xmas because I can't do anything but cry with pain. The thought I l'll have to stay like this for 2 months makes me want to die, I've never known pain like it. Total blinding pain that leaves me screaming and cold sweat down my back, my 3 births were nothing compared to it.
Do hospitals have dentists on call that can put you under and operate? Please help if you can, I feel like I'm cracking up with pain

Good luck for today op. Flowers

tilliebob · 23/12/2015 07:40

Hope you've had some rest OP, I've also had 3 dcs with no drugs, and dental pain is worse than any labour. I recently had some dental hassles and I was sobbing to my doctor "but the tramadol doesn't work!!" (I take it for another issue, along with other pain killers). He said of course it wouldn't, as they are not nerve painkillers. He gave me a hefty prescription for gabapentin and it worked a treat (but it was a huge dose x3 daily) and kept me almost sane until I could get the teeth dealt with.

Hope your appointment this morning gives you some relief Thanks

ThreeRuddyTubs · 23/12/2015 07:46

Good luck today op I'll be thinking of you

Roussette · 23/12/2015 07:48

Hope you managed some sleep Vatican, I woke up thinking of you. Lots of us here know what you are going through and it is horrendous. I'm so glad you have your DH looking after you.

I've had absecces (with two swellings bigger than golf balls round my mouth), infected gum, a tooth that took 3 different attempts to finally get it all out and unless you have had the pain, you can't begin to imagine. I paced the floor once muttering to myself and crying all night. Even now, if I get just a hint of toothache, something that anyone else would barely register, I am in complete and utter panic in case it builds up to that nightmare of indescribable pain.

I do hope you get it sorted today, the relief when they get the tooth out is beyond words and the pain instantly recedes.

AgentProvocateur · 23/12/2015 07:53

You have my sympathy. I hope you get it sorted today. My body was tending just reading your posts. Take care Flowers

fuctifino · 23/12/2015 08:05

Hope you managed to get sorted today.
I spent a sleepless weekend, sobbing at points due to an abscess and mercifully had it pulled on Monday.
I too said to the dentist that I'd rather give birth again than suffer toothache Sad

TingleBells · 23/12/2015 08:05

Hope that you managed to get some rest and relief Vatican. Best wishes for today, I hope that they sort it for you Flowers

Pregasaurusrex · 23/12/2015 08:19

Hi OP, I have been in this exact situation with two infected, impacted wisdom teeth. I went to the MAc Fax surgeon and cried and refused to leave until they did something. They took them out under GA the next day. In the meantime, I found cold/ hot compresses helped and as many prescription drugs as possible!

Pengweng · 23/12/2015 08:41

That sounds bloody awful. I agree that nerve pain is not remotely touched by any general pain killer so ask for something else if they can't pull them today. Fingers crossed they will do something though. It is not right or fair to leave someone in so much pain. HUGS x

Backingvocals · 23/12/2015 08:43

God OP this sounds horrendous. They must do something before Feb surely. Thinking of you and hoping something gets done today.

Boomingmarvellous · 23/12/2015 09:52

I would seriously not use clove oil before a dental operation. I used to work for NHS Direct and they had dental nurses who always advised against it. I believe it inflames or irritates the mucous membrane which is the last thing your dentist wants if he is cutting into the gum.

Clove oil does work though as does ,whisky-rubbed into the gum (I've tried it myself) so I can see why it's used but only very short term. They recommended not lying the head flat on a pillow but sleeping more reclined as it reduces pressure around the face. Cold compresses work too.

MrFMercury · 23/12/2015 10:03

You poor thing. Really hope you get some relief today. I had an abscess in my two front bottom teeth 18 years ago and can still remember the pain. My chin swelled so much I looked like Jimmy Hill! I've also had my top wisdom teeth removed twice even though you should only have one set! They were impacting the bottom ones and it was agony. They drilled the abscesses with no anaesthetic and pulled the top wisdom teeth with what felt like a spanner, the relief was instant so I didn't care. I have a congenital bone disease so they can't take the bottom ones out. They're sore but nothing close to what the other pain was like.
I'd go through child birth again in a second rather than that and I was also taking handfuls of painkillers with no real regard for the possible consequences because I was so desperate.
Every thing crossed you're feeling much better xxx

Justaboy · 23/12/2015 11:12

VaticanAssassin I just hope that your under an anaesthetic right now or at least soon to be but we can clearly see that this is a very severe type of pain and it seems to me that hardly anyone in the medical profession as far as A&E goes knows that much about it?.

If there are any dental pro's on the board do they teach you about this sort of thing at med school at all?.

ChatShitGetBanged · 23/12/2015 11:32

thinking of OP today and hope she has been sorted x

HappenstanceMarmite · 23/12/2015 11:55

Agree re worse pain imaginable. Probably because it is in your bloody head FFS. I remember thinking that I would actually cut off my own head if I'd had an axe handy.

Hope you get some help today.

VaticanAssassin · 23/12/2015 13:01

Thank you for all the messages last night and this morning - i really was losing the will to live with the pain.

I'm happy to say I'm totally free of pain now Grin minus the two back teeth, and still have a numb, lop-sided face but wow- the relief is amazing.

I have a few stitches in too, he said it'll help the healing- he's my new favourite person in the world atm, he's saved Christmas haha!

Might even get to enjoy some wine on Christmas day morning now Wink x

oh they did it right away? But how was it with no GA - am assuming no GA or you would not be posting now..?

so glad you're all right now Grin

notapizzaeater · 23/12/2015 13:11

Ouch ! Don't forget to put them under your pillow - the tooth fairy owes you big style .....

OnlyHereForTheCamping · 23/12/2015 13:12

That's fantastic news. Sorry to be a kill joy but I don't think you should have alcohol for a week after an extraction

WicksEnd · 23/12/2015 13:14

I feel relieved so Christ knows how you feel. Yay! Grin

Roussette · 23/12/2015 13:15

Fantastic! You will feel wonderful now! I've had so many teeth out, and really the mouth is very quick healing and a glass of something festive will not hurt you at all.

Hassled · 23/12/2015 13:15

So glad you got it sorted - cracked teeth and gallstones are now the two things I most hope to avoid, judging on the descriptions I've read of the level of pain. I cried when I dropped a jam jar on my toe - can't imagine how I'd have been with what you've gone through. Enjoy Christmas!

It's truly truly amazing when pain like this finally leaves you isn't it OP Grin

I'm sharing in your joy here. One xmas day a coupe of years ago i had to keep going upstairs and rocking/weeping/clutching my face because of appalling sinus pain. Didn't want to upset the kids. DH kept coming upstairs and just hugging me/looking at me/helpless.

I ended up nearly overdosing and made myself quite ill. Way too many pain killers (codene/apsrin/ibru) in 12 hours, but i was so desperate.

The relief when the pain left feels nothing short of a miracle! So glad to read you're ok. Happy Xmas!

ohtheholidays · 23/12/2015 13:22

That's brilliant news OP,I hope you get to enjoy your Christmas now Xmas Smile
