To turn up at hospital with toothache? I can't cope with the pain anymore

VaticanAssassin · 22/12/2015 18:14

I am booked in for an operation to remove 2 back teeth, which has to be done under GA because they need to cut into my gum and remove in pieces because they cracked while eating a while ago.
But the operation date is not til February and i can't cope with the pain anymore, physically and mentally losing my mind with it- I'm taking Tramadol, 30/500 Co-codamol, Ibuprofen, Aspirin and Naproxen and still having stabbing pains in my face, jaw and ear, throbbing in my gum, and blinding pain.
I haven't eaten in 5 days because I can't put any pressure in my mouth at all, so just having warm cup-a-soup, and warm water.

Taken a full course of antibiotics, but still in fucking agony and feel totally useless and depressed, I'm going to ruin my kids Xmas because I can't do anything but cry with pain. The thought I l'll have to stay like this for 2 months makes me want to die, I've never known pain like it. Total blinding pain that leaves me screaming and cold sweat down my back, my 3 births were nothing compared to it.
Do hospitals have dentists on call that can put you under and operate? Please help if you can, I feel like I'm cracking up with pain

If you don't get anywhere tonight, I'd be on my dentist's door in the morning when they open the door, asking for treatment I.e. get me an emergency appt with relevant person today.....even if it meant paying for private.

HelsBels3000 · 22/12/2015 22:51

You have my greatest sympathies - the pain after my horrendous wisdom tooth extraction was like no pain I could ever describe ( and I've delivered a 10b baby on gas & air which resulted in a 3rd degree tear) I actually rolled around on my bed wanting to die. I have never had suicidal thoughts but honestly I couldn't think straight.
You cannot go on like this. My wisdom tooth had to be cracked to be removed in bits, I was awake (had about 20 local anaesthetic injections though) and it was bloody awful. However I'm pretty sure you would take anything right now?! Mine was done at local hospital.

R3alxmastr33 · 22/12/2015 22:57

I have had bad toothache & swollen face up to my eye, alot of pain
I took various pain killers

So I sympathise

I phoned my dental surgery out of hours

Who booked me an emergency appointment

I saw an emergency dentist the next day ( not at a hospital)

Dentist prescribed me antibotics

He did not look in my mouth
He did not touch my face

It cleared up after a couple of days

I hope you feel better soon

ButterflyUpSoHigh · 22/12/2015 23:45

I had a bad abcess nhs direct told me to go to A&E. When I got there they wouldn't see me and told me off for wasting their time. I managed to get in with an emergency dentist at 2a.m, Toothache is agony you have my sympathy.

VaticanAssassin · 22/12/2015 23:50

I've been to hospital and given morphine and it's done nothing. Can't be seen by dentist til tomorrow, I cannot cope it feels like I'm dying with pain

Sounds bonkers, but try a heat pack in your face and running something like a whisk up and down your cheek until the morning. Try and focus in on the feeling of it on your face, without gouging your cheek out. It was the only thing that kept me sane, whilst looking like a crazy person on strong pain killers.

PingpongDingDong · 22/12/2015 23:55

Oh op I so feel for you. Massive hugs and sympathy. I had something similar years ago and it was truly truly horrendous. I went to A and E like yourself ( was told to by my dentist) and saw the maxi facial people who put me on IV anti biotics. Did the trick after 3 days. Bloody hell I felt ill. Could you possibly go back again?

lorelei9 · 22/12/2015 23:56

Poor OP
You're able to see a dentist tomorrow I hope?
I really feel for you Flowers

PingpongDingDong · 22/12/2015 23:58

The night before I went I spent the entire night with a pillow pressed against my face and trying to breath as deeply and calmly as I could. I had a long bath at one point.

sleeplessinmybedroom · 23/12/2015 00:01

Poor you, dental pain is the worst. I hope the dentist sorts it quickly for you tomorrow.

wowfudge · 23/12/2015 00:13

My god severe toothache is the worst. Where in the NW are you OP? My own dentist was brilliant when I was in agony earlier this year. They fitted me in when I told them how bad the pain was (and it doesn't sound as bad as yours), but otc painkillers weren't touching it and I couldn't sleep. The relief when the tooth and abcess were removed was immediate, I could tell even though I'd had anaesthetic.

You have my sympathy and I think you need to demand treatment.

kippersmum · 23/12/2015 00:15

Oh Vatican :( how awful for you. I have had similar dental issues & it is truly horrendous.

The only positive thing I can think of is I will never, ever, ever forget the feeling when the anaesthetic kicked in before they took the bloody teeth out. The fact the pain was gone meant I didn't mind in the slightest I was losing my front teeth.

You are in my thoughts.

Please be careful with the painkillers tonight, I was so frazzled I nearly misread one of the packets I had & took far too much. Easy mistake to make when in that much pain.

Baddaybidet · 23/12/2015 00:24

Aintree Hospital in North Liverpool has max fax department who do on calls if that is any help.

SistersOfPercy · 23/12/2015 00:36

No heat! If there is an infection in there it can make it worse. You can use ice though.

I had 2 abcesses top and bottom in my back teeth once. If I could have found pliers I'd have pulled them myself. I genuinely wanted to die and have never known pain like it.

You really are in my thoughts x

serin · 23/12/2015 00:41

God, you poor thing. I had similar a few months ago, pain was unbearable, no sleep, worse than labour (which I managed 3 times without pain relief).

I saw a private dentist after my usual NHS dentist saw me, gave me antibiotics and left me to suffer for 2 weeks. Private dentist was bloody amazing, saw me the same day, X rayed, found that the tooth was fractured, pulled it and the pain just went. Cost £98, was the best money I ever spent.

I am in the North West, if you can't get in at the Liverpool or Manc hospitals I can PM you his details?

Italiangreyhound · 23/12/2015 00:45

Good luck. In your shoes I would sit in the dentist waiting room wailing in pain until they arrange emergency dental treatment. No idea if A and E can help but you need to go somewhere.

When I had a toothache due to a root canal problem, which was awful but does not sound nearly anywhere as bad as yours, I had a cool bag that is used for sports injury, put it in the freezer and then on my cheek, but be careful not to get frostbite.

Good luck, you need to make a lot of fuss until you get seen. Have you a friend or relative who can go and fight your corner for you. Sometimes having someone else there to say "This cannot go on" can make a difference.

TheWitTank · 23/12/2015 00:54

I sympathise completely. I has a wisdom tooth extracted, the dentist broke it during the process and left a fragment inside the hole causing a monstrous infection. I suffered for over two weeks, woke up crying throughout the night every night, couldn't do anything or eat anything solid, overdosed on paracetamol to try and cope with the agony Sad. Truly the worst pain ever, and I've nearly cut my big toe off completely, broken my nose a few times an given birth with no pain relief to a persistent OP baby. I swear I was on the verge of madness by the end, I remember going back to the dentist in a right state wailing in the waiting room until the saw me. Flowers I really hope you get some help x

TheCraicDealer · 23/12/2015 01:12

Teeth are just shit aren't they? The more you hear about them going wrong the more you think, "evolution, you fucked up here."

Justaboy · 23/12/2015 01:13

If it were me or any of mine I'd be holding a bloody sit down protest by now you should not be be in that sort of pain or kept there in it. I am not a doc but it seems that your on a lot of med's for that and i bet its starting to sod up something else.

Is there anyone else there who can help you at all?. To argue your case as good as the NHS usually is it has been sometimes in the past that you do have to agitate with them or put your foot down if occasion demands and this one does. If your still at hospital then stay there to make sure something does happen as soon as they can get someone to see you.

You poor soul:-(

toffeeboffin · 23/12/2015 01:42

You need to go back to the dentist or A&E or Liverpool Dentist hospital and literally refuse to leave until you are operated on. Literally. Rock from side to side etc. Sounds like hell, OP.

They can find surgeons if they have to.

VaticanAssassin · 23/12/2015 01:56

Thank you to everyone for your lovely words Flowers, you're all lovely and have been full of great advice. I've cried that much today my eyes look like I've had an allergic reaction, and can't take any more painkillers until 2 30. I'm a mess but just hoping when the dentist sees the state of me tomorrow he'll sympathise and take them out without the Maxilo appt beforehand. I feel bad as I've upset my kids with being such an incapable mess- luckily DH is here to take over when I've been sobbing and rocking in my room. Fingers crossed it passes v.soon.
Thank you all again x

DecaffCoffeeAndRollupsPlease · 23/12/2015 02:17

Many sympathies.

I hope you can get a little bit of sleep at least tonight, and a better solution tomorrow.

Could you phone a&e and tell them that the morphine hasn't worked?

Do you have transport, could you get to the hospital 40 miles away if they could treat you there? Have you phoned there already to explain the circumstances?

VaticanAssassin · 23/12/2015 02:42

Decaff DH did try phoning to get them if they'd admit me because I'm in horrendous pain still, even after the morphine. They said to him I coukd come up and sit in A&E until my appointment, but they have no on call dentist, and Co I'll dbt do anything until my appt in the morning.

At least here if the pain does ease I can sleep a bit. Though that's doubtful.
I'm really shocked that nothing works from Tramadol to Morphine to solpadol to Naproxen and it's still like someone is stabbing me in the jaw and ears. I'm totally drained and literally dropping with it. Thabk you. If the dentist won't treat me in the morning I'll have to rework my treatment options.x

Hi
Opiates don't work well for nerve pain. Ask for an amytriptaline prescription either from GP or a walk-in a&e. It's an antidepressant but is used for situations like this - albeit at a low dose. Found out since that Its saved many a patients sanity!!!

I tried it, was on all the meds you are on and it worked like magic - honestly! 12 hours later I was almost pain free x
