To turn up at hospital with toothache? I can't cope with the pain anymore

VaticanAssassin · 22/12/2015 18:14

I am booked in for an operation to remove 2 back teeth, which has to be done under GA because they need to cut into my gum and remove in pieces because they cracked while eating a while ago.
But the operation date is not til February and i can't cope with the pain anymore, physically and mentally losing my mind with it- I'm taking Tramadol, 30/500 Co-codamol, Ibuprofen, Aspirin and Naproxen and still having stabbing pains in my face, jaw and ear, throbbing in my gum, and blinding pain.
I haven't eaten in 5 days because I can't put any pressure in my mouth at all, so just having warm cup-a-soup, and warm water.

Taken a full course of antibiotics, but still in fucking agony and feel totally useless and depressed, I'm going to ruin my kids Xmas because I can't do anything but cry with pain. The thought I l'll have to stay like this for 2 months makes me want to die, I've never known pain like it. Total blinding pain that leaves me screaming and cold sweat down my back, my 3 births were nothing compared to it.
Do hospitals have dentists on call that can put you under and operate? Please help if you can, I feel like I'm cracking up with pain

I had a GA for my wisdom teeth! Deffo that and not sedation.
And had to wait as was pregnant at the time that the pain started and remember rolling around the bed in pain in agony!
I truly am sympathetic and would have 10 babies back to back then go through that again.
If you are in as much pain as you said you are then go!

Pidapie · 22/12/2015 18:43

Ouch this sounds terrible. Go find help, good luck!

notapizzaeater · 22/12/2015 18:45

That sounds horrific, can you not ring nhs direct and they fund you an emergency dentist (or more pain relief)

I had GA when I had my wisdom teeth out.

Mrsmorton · 22/12/2015 18:45

So, in short YANBU. Some people go to A&E because they've lost their dentures.

JE1234 · 22/12/2015 18:46

Does the hospital with max-fac also have an A&E even though it's further away? If so I'd go there, I can't see your local A&E being able to help much. Could you call OOH for advice first?

RaskolnikovsGarret · 22/12/2015 18:47

Go to the emergency dental hospital asap OP. I've been, and they sorted it out. There is no way you should be in this much pain for two days, let alone two months. This is a total emergency. If you can afford it, get a cab and GO. Flowers

ammature · 22/12/2015 18:48

I called my out of hours gp once for dental pain and they gave me an injection. Would that be an option?

Boomingmarvellous · 22/12/2015 18:49

Max fax will only deal with facial emergencies like fractures, at this time, sadly not dental.

Pain relief is at maximum. Diclofenac is not as powerful as naproxen and she is already on that and ibuprofen. A dose of oromorph might be possible but under no circumstances would they give that or morphine patches for 2 months for toothache.

Your dentist will have to refer you as more urgent to the dental hospital and speed things up. The pain must be unimaginable Sad

waitingforsomething · 22/12/2015 18:50

Gosh you poor thing. Where I used to live there was an out of hours emergency dentist based at the hospital- have you got one.
I have just had oral shingles and it was the most painful experience of my life- it was only 2 weeks of pain and I started to get depressed and cried in pain all day so I get a smidgen of how you're feeling. It is not fair for you to suffer until Feb- I wouldn't blame you for going to a&e but I think a dentist would be better if possible

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 22/12/2015 18:52

sounds horrific I really hope it gets sorted out asap whichever option you go for.Flowers

kali110 · 22/12/2015 18:54

Yes op go.
I'm on those painkillers for severe problems, so i can only imagine the pain you are in x

FrostyNipples · 22/12/2015 18:56

Poor OP Xmas Sad

I had an emergency (emergency meant half filled fucking agony root) root prep to tide me over until I can have the three root canals I urgently need Xmas Shock

I got the date of March 2016 but after my call they kindly bumped me up to a 4.5 set of appointments in February.....

I've been self medicating marijuana since early November .

PastaLaFeasta · 22/12/2015 18:59

You are on a lot of pain relief but it isn't the strongest stuff, liquid morphine is great but toothache is constant so you can't take that daily until February. Is the pain due to the nerves? There are drugs that are better for nerve pain like SNRI anti depressants and tricyclics which may help with sleep too. I've just started tapentadol which is an opiate like Tramadol but stronger, it is supposed to be good for nerve pain too. GP is worth a try but they aren't great, any chance of pushing for an emergency op? A&E should be able to help, I'd certainly hope they would. The pain specialists are usually anaesthetists but a routine appointment would take months. Any chance of paying privately? It must be awful - my back ache is like toothache at times, the worst pain ever, deep gnawing pain and you can't concentrate on anything else.

legohurtswhenyoustandonit · 22/12/2015 19:02

Our local Health Board has an emergency dentist - I think it may be part of the local dental hospital. Might be worth looking online to see if your local Board/Trust has something similar.

ihearttc · 22/12/2015 19:03

If you've had a course of AB's and you are still in pain it might suggest the infection is still there. If it is then you might need a course of IV antibiotics.

I would try A&E and see if they can get one of the Oral Surgeons to look at you. (I used to be a dental nurse in a previous life)

VaticanAssassin · 22/12/2015 19:12

Chipped I live in the North West Sad

I saw the emergency dentist who straightaway said he couldn't do anything. DH just spoken to NHS 111 number and they've said go to A&E for more pain relief.
I dont want pain relief I need them out!
I can't cope with this pain it's non stop stabbing making me jump out of my skin

This sounds awful ... I have had my fair share of dental pain and it is miserable.

Who is doing your operation and where? Is it at a hospital under max fax? Can you telephone your surgeon / surgeon's team tomorrow - ring the secretaries - explain you are in agony, on multiple painkillers and cannot eat - perhaps they will do you on an emergency list.

MrsFrankRicard · 22/12/2015 19:17

I have rocked up to A&E when I had a dental abscess and my face started to swell, I was booked in for extraction later in the week but my dentist advised me that if swelling got worse to go to the hospital and it did get worse - neck started to swell so in I went. I had 2 teeth removed at the hospital by the max fac doctor, they were brilliant. Also the pain you are describing sounds like you need more antibiotics.

Roussette · 22/12/2015 19:18

I can only offer sympathy having had the same... I was literally rocking from side to side counting the minutes to the next pain relief which didn't even touch it. I would rather push out a 16lb baby than suffer like that again. I honestly felt like digging out my tooth myself, my face was huge with infection, just dreadful.

Is Christmas impacting on this... I can only suggest going back to the dentist and asking for some sort of referral. (which I see you have but you can't go on like this till February. Every minute seems like an hour when you're in such pain)

DecaffCoffeeAndRollupsPlease · 22/12/2015 19:24

My sympathies, dental pain is the worst, hope you can get some relief.

I was patronised and laughed at by receptionists for emergency dentists once, their "What do you expect us to do?" made me want to throttle them.

Others have said a&e have provided emergency pain relief so, I would try there.

SomedayMyPrinceWillCome · 22/12/2015 19:24

Just be aware that not every hospital has a maxilo facial dept & even then they may not have an on call from that department. It maybe worth checking out what departments / services the hospital has before you attend

MrsBungle · 22/12/2015 19:25

What a nightmare. Dh had to go to a and e with his tooth last year. They brought someone down from max facs and they took his tooth out in the middle of the night, his face had swollen like a football. Sounds like your local a and e doesn't have that department though. Could you travel the 40 miles to their a and e? It sounds horrendous.

I'm another one who had wisdom teeth out under a general in hospital. I know quite a few people who have.

PitilessYank · 22/12/2015 19:27

Oh, dental pain can be horrific! Before I had a root canal I had this terrible pain which reminded me of labor, in that the pain had a rhythm of ramping up and down which was like having every 5 minute contractions with a tiny bit of relief in between.

Some emergency room doctors are able to do dental nerve block injections, and if they use the right combination of medications, they can last a while and usually provide good relief. I hope you find one! (That is what is usually done here in the US in a case such as yours, to temporize until a more permanent solution can be found.

TingleBells · 22/12/2015 19:28

As you are in the NW, is the Liverpool University Dental Hospital of any use to you? www.rlbuht.nhs.uk They have emergency advice and daily clinics.
