To turn up at hospital with toothache? I can't cope with the pain anymore

I am booked in for an operation to remove 2 back teeth, which has to be done under GA because they need to cut into my gum and remove in pieces because they cracked while eating a while ago.
But the operation date is not til February and i can't cope with the pain anymore, physically and mentally losing my mind with it- I'm taking Tramadol, 30/500 Co-codamol, Ibuprofen, Aspirin and Naproxen and still having stabbing pains in my face, jaw and ear, throbbing in my gum, and blinding pain.
I haven't eaten in 5 days because I can't put any pressure in my mouth at all, so just having warm cup-a-soup, and warm water.

Taken a full course of antibiotics, but still in fucking agony and feel totally useless and depressed, I'm going to ruin my kids Xmas because I can't do anything but cry with pain. The thought I l'll have to stay like this for 2 months makes me want to die, I've never known pain like it. Total blinding pain that leaves me screaming and cold sweat down my back, my 3 births were nothing compared to it.
Do hospitals have dentists on call that can put you under and operate? Please help if you can, I feel like I'm cracking up with pain

Bless you OP - I had a terrible abscess where I had trismus (where you are unable to open the jaw due to pain) a few years back and had the tooth out eventually at MRI but I was absolutely totally desperate and saw a very compassionate dentist at Manchester dental hospital.

Anyway happy to keep you company overnight, I can't sleep either due to pain from an enormous mouth ulcer. It must be awful if morphine has done nothing - not even made you slightly floaty and relaxed?

VaticanAssassin · 23/12/2015 03:15

Muji I definitely will ask, thank you. I just can't believe they aren't working, I had 2 of my 3 DCs wth no pain relief and it was nothing compared to this. I'll ask about possible Amytriptaline because the pain is beyond anything I've ever had Sad

My total sympathies OP... I so hope the 230 tabs have taken effect and you're asleep?

.. Am so glad that at least they're taking you seriously... Sorry things aren't working better...

I think unless you've experienced it- no one appreciates the total misery of this type of pain. I recall rocking with pain when I went thru similar... With me I didn't have a dentist as moved area and there were no vacancies... I too did the OOH/101/A&E waiting for 3 hours having been told to attend, to be told to go somewhere else, to be told they don't treat dental pain /abscess....etc etc

The one thing that got me seen quicker was saying loudly that it was completely unethical leaving me in this much pain...

8 really hope you're sorted soonest...

PitilessYank · 23/12/2015 03:24

Can you take some diphenhydramine or some other antihistamine to help you get a little sleep?

VaticanAssassin · 23/12/2015 03:41

Pitiless I've taken a Promethazine, even if I can't sleep I'm just going to rest as best I can. I really don't know how people without access to dentists in the world cope- DH has done everything today and looked after me, he's really helped, as has all the advice given here too Flowers.
Just praying the teeth come out easily tomorrow and this never ever happens again Smile

Good luck

PitilessYank · 23/12/2015 03:59

I hope that you get some rest and that you get the treatment you need in the morning. Thanks

PiccalilliSandwiches · 23/12/2015 04:35

Hope things get sorted for you OP. Just a reminder to not eat breakfast in case they can fit you on to an emergency list. You have to be fasted for 6 hours (food/milk/fresh juice) and 2 hours (water) for a general anaesthetic. Good luck, tooth pain is awful.
I'm afraid amitryptilline takes 2-3 weeks to properly kick in so wouldn't give the immediate pain relief you need. Gabapentin will work faster for nerve pain, though not as good a choice for longer term.

BoxofSnails · 23/12/2015 04:42

Rest well Vatican and hope help and the morning come quickly.

I got rushed into hospital once because of a broken tooth.I was in so much pain,I couldn't eat and I hadn't slept for 3 days and I managed to take to many painkillers,I was so confused because of the pain and the lack of sleep.

I came round on the frontroom floor at home, managed to dial 999 and the next thing I remember is coming round in the hospital.

They were really good, they got the head dentist for the hospital to come and see me,he ordered x -rays straight away,I had those done and then he came and told me what was wrong and what they were going to do.I was stuck straight onto 3 strong courses of anti biotic drips. That knocked me out,I was in and out of sleep for the next few days and then he removed the tooth and managed to remove a syringe full of poison that had collected in my jaw.The relief was instant and they allowed me to go home the same day a few hours later with more anti biotics and painkillers,an emergency number incase I had any serious problems and a follow up appointment for a week later.

donajimena · 23/12/2015 05:16

Oh bless you
I was like this last year with an abcess. I wanted to be shot.

crabb · 23/12/2015 05:27

Hope you've managed to snatch some sleep. Vatican.

ohtheholidays · 23/12/2015 05:34

Oh OP you poor sod,I was hoping they'd have been able to keep you in and give you something to help you sleep.

One thing that I've found that helped a bit was distraction from the pain.Like when I was in labour having my back rubbed. With killer toothache I've found rubbing my hands or moving my hands clockwise over my stomach helps.I know it sounds completely nuts but it's something to do with it interfering with the pain signals going to your brain,it works in the same way as a tens machine would.

I'm disabled now and seriously ill so live with daily pain now and when my pain meds aren't cutting it the distraction technique really helps.

Good luck with your appointment I hope they get your teeth out quickly for you.

wannabestressfree · 23/12/2015 05:41

You have my utmost sympathy.... I have a crohnic illness and am often in pain but nothing compares to the pain of toothache. I waited a YEAR to have my broken tooth removed and the crap that was leaking from it made me a mess......

Pobspits · 23/12/2015 05:49

All the sympathy in the world OP I had similar before i had dc and birth was a piece of piss in comparison!!!!

PoorFannyRobin · 23/12/2015 06:13

OP, just wanted to add my sympathy for your plight, too. Agree that there is no pain I've known to compare to a toothache had an almost invisible split in a tooth that would move slightly and press on a nerve. I swear it felt as if someone was knifing me through the skull into my eye socket with an added electric shock effect! Nausea, cold chills, sobbing the whole thing. The relief when it was removed! Please let us know what happens. Thinking of you.

cashewnutty · 23/12/2015 06:17

I hope you get this resolved tomorrow. It sounds horrendous.

SpaghettiMeatballs · 23/12/2015 06:20

You poor thing. I really hope they can help you today. Flowers

strayduck · 23/12/2015 06:20

Probably doesn't work with pain this bad but clove oil may be worth a shot. It's a natural anaesthetic. In the past I have mixed a tiny amount with olive oil, soaked the mixture in some cotton wool and placed wool on gum. You need to get the mixture right but when you do the relief is amazing.

Camembertie · 23/12/2015 06:29

Just adding my support hoping it goes well and easily for you today x

PingpongDingDong · 23/12/2015 06:59

Thought of you as soon as I woke op. Hang in there. Dentist day today. Surely they MUST take them out for you now.

piapiapiano · 23/12/2015 06:59

Hope you managed some rest, best wishes for today x

lostlalaloopsy · 23/12/2015 07:27

I was thinking of you this morning OP, I hope the appt goes well and they remove your tooth! Keep us updated x

Heyheyheygoodbye · 23/12/2015 07:29

I feel awful for you OP; I've had nights and days like that with my teeth and honestly thought I was going to die from the pain. I remember one of the lovely nurses saying to me that it was worse than giving birth in her opinion!

Hoping you can get some relief today Flowers

MummyPig24 · 23/12/2015 07:36

Gosh, how awful for you. Dental pain is hideous. I really hope the dentist sorts you out today.
