to think that Cilla Black wasn't as perfect as she is made out to be

According to her son, Cilla Black died laughing at Jeremy Kyle and drinking champagne.

As someone that was supposed to have remembered " where she came from" there are so many anecdotes about what a diva she was. From the way she treated cabin crew, to the time she showed no empathy to the family of a motorcyclist her son had killed in a crash (she was more worried about if he would go to prison) this is just another example of how she saw herself as being above the rest.

Laughing at people who obviously have issues, be it in relationships or in life in general isn't pleasant. I just don't get the public fawning over her when she sounds like an unpleasant person. Perhaps it is just another case of celebrity worship.

I've read all sorts about Cilla, good and bad, but what struck me most about the recent drama about her and her autobiography is that she was brutally honest about her own ego and not allowing her husband to follow his career. I don't like her politics, but she was catering for and encouraging a gay audience way before it became fashionable or acceptable to do so and that makes me like her.

Plus I tend to judge people by the company they keep and two of her closest friends were Paul O'Grady and Christopher Biggins. I've got a lot of time for POG but I once spent an afternoon at a work thing with Biggins and a nicer, more generous, self deprecating, funny and simply lovely person I've yet to meet. So I don't reckon Cilla was so bad.

flatbellyfella · 22/12/2015 20:10

I loved her strong voice in the 60s , still worth listening to.

EachandEveryone · 23/12/2015 00:10

Whenever I read on here about Cilla I always think of Paul O'Grady and his eulogy and I do not think for a second he would have time for her if she was an utter cow. His books are fantastic and she was a true fag hag if that expression is still allowed on here. Sure, she was a diva but I don't think for a second she was the vile person people on here like to say she was. He wouldn't have given her the time of day.

Sansoora · 23/12/2015 05:47

I love Paul's books as well and I watch his shows but I think he's as much a professional Merseysider as Cilla was.

EachandEveryone · 23/12/2015 06:59

Who doesn't do that though? Plenty of Northern rock stars act as if they are still in Manchester when they live in Hampstead. Jane Horrocks is another one of the top of my head. I think it's normal in show biz.

EachandEveryone · 23/12/2015 09:17

Even myself I've lived in London 20 years and people often tell me I haven't lost my accent.

MrsJayy · 23/12/2015 09:24

The woman is dead fgs perhaps jk was being funny the audience laughed and cilla laughed along who knows but starting a thread to poke a dead woman is pretty distasteful

pictish · 23/12/2015 09:28

Cilla's voice wasn't a nice one, singing or otherwise. A very shrill woman to my mind. And I would have said the same while she was alive, so don't start any of that ne'er-speak-ill-o-the-dead nonsense either. Grin
Terrible hair too.

BooyakaTurkeyisMassive · 23/12/2015 12:11

The thing about POG and Biggins though. Cilla seemed to be capable of being charm personified when it benefited her. So showbiz friends she saw as 'good enough' who were valuable contacts would, of course, have been treated to 1,000 watt Cilla charm. It's how she's supposed to have treated little people, those who couldn't do her a favour, which I think shows her true character. So cabin crew, shop assistants, runners. And those reports are almost universally bad.

In fact, after she died, it was reported on Popbitch (which is a good, reliable, insiders source) that the reason Cilla couldn't get any TV work in her later years was because most of the top TV execs by that time were people who had started out as runners and therefore been treated like shit by her in the past and wouldn't entertain any sort of idea of a TV comeback.

FlatOnTheHill · 23/12/2015 14:23

None of us are perfect. If im ever off work and catch a glimps of the Jeremy Kyle show I generally laugh. I think most people do and that includes the audience on the show.

KakiFruit · 23/12/2015 14:26

Agree with BooyakaTurkeyisMassive. By all non-celebrity accounts she wasn't a nice person.

Want2bSupermum · 23/12/2015 14:35

I will correct you because my gran was no celebrity and CB was always lovely. CB was working hard and always called my gran every Sunday. When she stopped working she still called my gran. If my gran was in London she would call on her way round and ask if my gran needed anything picked up from the supermarket.

Ohbehave1 · 23/12/2015 17:17

Want2b. So she was nice to your nan who obviously was a friend.

That doesn't mean she was a nice person all round. I am with Booyaka. It's those she thought were serving her she seemed to treat as beneath her.

It's really not important.

Lightbulbon · 23/12/2015 17:44

I didn't like the way she treated that cosmo journalist on blind date.

var123 · 23/12/2015 21:00

I haven't read the thread, so it may have been linked before, but I think its a fairly credible description of cilla.

I didn't like the way she treated that cosmo journalist on blind date.

I thought that was bloody brilliant!!!

var123 . . . the Daily Fail?? Really??

SevenOfNineTrue · 24/12/2015 14:31

I doubt any of us would stand up to such intense scrutiny. I doubt she was a saint but I've seen people who have been far too familiar with celebrities and then when the celebrity does not act as their 'best friend', they get upset and bitch.

FlatOnTheHill · 24/12/2015 15:01

Just come back to this thread from yesterday.
Bloody hell. Was Cilla so bad?
Because she laughed at Jeremy Kyle show that lets be honest is full of toothless dole spongers. (And before anyone has a go at me about saying dole spongers). They all look capable of working!
The woman is dead for goodness sake.

I don't get this thing about Jeremy Kyle? What are you supposed to do whilst watching? Surely everyone laughs?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 24/12/2015 16:02

Depends if you find the misfortune of others funny or not I guess...

Sansoora · 24/12/2015 16:04

I laugh at JK as well because the sense of humour of some of those taking part just cant be beaten.

VagueIdeas · 24/12/2015 16:09

Popbitch did a compilation of their best Cilla gossip. Worth a read, it's really funny Grin
