to think that Cilla Black wasn't as perfect as she is made out to be

According to her son, Cilla Black died laughing at Jeremy Kyle and drinking champagne.

As someone that was supposed to have remembered " where she came from" there are so many anecdotes about what a diva she was. From the way she treated cabin crew, to the time she showed no empathy to the family of a motorcyclist her son had killed in a crash (she was more worried about if he would go to prison) this is just another example of how she saw herself as being above the rest.

Laughing at people who obviously have issues, be it in relationships or in life in general isn't pleasant. I just don't get the public fawning over her when she sounds like an unpleasant person. Perhaps it is just another case of celebrity worship.

I laugh at Jeremy Kyle every time I see it.

Ohbehave1 · 22/12/2015 17:11

I am not doubting she was a pioneer for women on tv, but then Margaret Thatcher was a pioneer for women in politics and I am sure people would rip her to pieces on here. Dead or alive.

It seems you are are only a 'good' person if you vote the same way they do.

I think its more likely that people didn't like the fact she went through life on the back of her working class roots yet she was a staunch Tory when most people from her background were anything but.

wasonthelist · 22/12/2015 17:12

I don't see why she was obliged to keep quiet about her politics though?

She wasn't

I don't like the Tories either but they are a legitimate political party. I can't really see the problem.

Well there isn't one as long as it's fine for me not to like her for it, and consider it a legitimate area for comment - if I intimate my political leanings to someone, I expect they may discuss it and may ultimately like or dislike me partly on that basis. I am not being particularly personal (although it disappointed me a lot that Cilla was such a Thatcher apologist) - I would say (and have) the same about many Thatcher apologists - but they don't generally have a thread on here.

Of course not - I have debated politics with lots of people - and there are a few for whom I have respect for their differing politics. I don't think it's especially easy to divorce personal values and aspirations from a general political will - I haven't found anyone advocating the generality of Thatcherite policy that I have much in common with - and it's hard for me to see virtue in person who would advocate such things.

Oh right, so if you're working class, you have to vote Labour?

It would seem that way.....

NameChanger22 · 22/12/2015 17:28

I don't know what she was like as a person but I do know she was a terrible singer and rubbish at presenting. I never understand why she was famous.

var123 · 22/12/2015 17:34

I was listening to that clip with her son this morning and thinking to myself how she must have dominated his life. I felt sorry for him and I was wondering if he feels relief to be free of her now or if he really thinks she was great.

Ohbehave1 · 22/12/2015 17:36

MrsDeVere. It was it a comparison of them as people but of the situation. But you knew that of course.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 22/12/2015 17:37

Thatcher was ripped to pieces here when she died.

Ohbehave1 · 22/12/2015 17:37

Should have read "not a comparison of them as people"

Ohbehave1 · 22/12/2015 17:40

Exactly Stillsaying. But I guess that is ok because Some people don't agree with her politics.

Sansoora · 22/12/2015 17:41

Who said that?

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 22/12/2015 17:42

Thatcher destroyed communities and lives of those people with some of her policies.

Cilla didn't.

Sansoora · 22/12/2015 17:42

*Oh right, so if you're working class, you have to vote Labour?

Not at all.

Ohbehave1 · 22/12/2015 17:44

Some would say it was the unions that destroyed it stillsaying, but that is a different discussion.

I live in Liverpool, grew up here and after seeing our City destroyed, by underfunding in the 80's, enforced poverty, distraction of industry, large employers moved down South and of course Hillsborough, it's very difficult not to dislike her.

She gave such public support for MT and the Right wing press.

However it's my first Christmas without my Mum, as it is theirs, so the Thread is very unnecessary. My Mum wasn't a very nice person to many (and to my shame voted Tory in 1979) but like everyone, she had good points, it's called being Human.

Entertainers don't have to have high intelligence and thinking abilities, it's the press that set them up as Role Models, they should never be. They have to be good at entertaining, Cilla was.

Her Sons have given statements, stories because a tribute show has been approved by the people handling her Career post death.

The only thing I find odd is that this Son had interviews with the Coroner and the final conclusion was that Cilla died between 12.30-2pm.

Why was this verdict allowed if he didn't leave her until 1, alive and well?

Having said that, I'm sure each family member would recount my Mums last days differently, that's how memory works.

She achieved a lot, but then she made the right friends to be able to do so.

Birdsgottafly · 22/12/2015 17:58

Destruction not distraction.

Sansoora · 22/12/2015 18:00

I wonder if the time difference factors into it and people have UK time and Spanish time in their head. I do it all the time. I live in this time zone but when thinking of the Uk I think of Uk time.

Does that make any sense?

I grew up in the North West. A lot of working class scouse from CB's generation grew up and were able to move into the middle class. Their voting habits changed from Labour to Tory and they moved out of Liverpool, mainly to the Wirral and Chester but also North Wales and further into Cheshire towards Manchester. Cilla Black is one of those people. She just moved further south. If the television studio had been in the Liverpool/Manchester area she would have been living either in Caldy or Hale/Alderley Edge. Once she had her children she was a pioneer in terms of being a working mother. Reports of her refusing to stay overnight in Liverpool was because she wanted to be home with her DH and children when they were young. I admire her for demanding this accommodation. If you think about all the presenters on television, not many managed to have the type of marriage that CB had.

My grandmother knew Cilla Black from when she first started trying to establish a career and they remained friends until my grandmother passed away. People have always loved to pull her down because Cilla didn't put up with crap from anyone. She had very high standards that demanded from herself and others. It was hard for her to accept that there are others who are happy to 'just coast along'. It is a totally different mindset that you have when you see your mother doing hard manual labour and you see you have a shot at getting away from that.

80schild · 22/12/2015 18:16

I can see why people want to let it be known that she was not perfect. Basically, what the media likes to do nowadays is to beatify people after they die, which is kind of alright if they are really nice people but frankly most celebrities aren't and it is really annoying. It is not necessary about being awful about someone but just acknowledging people's weaknesses would be really refreshing.

Quite frankly, remembering the articles I saw about blind date I recall more than once hearing that she was a diva and her voice was grating to the max.

Chippednailvarnish · 22/12/2015 18:20

What a weird thread to start...

Birdsgottafly · 22/12/2015 18:22

Sansoora, you're right, it was 1.30-3.30 local time.
