AIBU?

to think that Cilla Black wasn't as perfect as she is made out to be

According to her son, Cilla Black died laughing at Jeremy Kyle and drinking champagne.

As someone that was supposed to have remembered " where she came from" there are so many anecdotes about what a diva she was. From the way she treated cabin crew, to the time she showed no empathy to the family of a motorcyclist her son had killed in a crash (she was more worried about if he would go to prison) this is just another example of how she saw herself as being above the rest.

Laughing at people who obviously have issues, be it in relationships or in life in general isn't pleasant. I just don't get the public fawning over her when she sounds like an unpleasant person. Perhaps it is just another case of celebrity worship.

So her son remembering his mum is now deemed 'pathetic'

No. Making a news story and character assassination out of that fact us pathetic.

I have absolutely no idea what sort of person she was. But to have the level of success she had, for so many years, with a small amount of singing talent and no great beauty, I reckon she must have been very bright and very strong.

Do you know, I am close friends with a famous person who is regularly slated on MN, but she, and her husband are the nicest, most 'normal' people you could ever wish to meet.

Read the tabloids and you believe so much shit about them, all of it is absolute crap, and yet, even the intelligent buy into the gossip. 'A waitress told me,' 'apparantly', 'they reckon'......

Honestly, take a look at your own lives and think how what you did/said /looked like on a a bad day. Now imagine it being splashed all over the tabloids and gossiped about on here.

I have no idea about Cilla. Instinctively, I did not like her, but probably because I am as gullible as the rest of the general population.

Why do we think that those whose job it is to entertain should be so much better than the rest of us in their private lives?

Some of the attitudes on MN piss me off - what celebrities wear, plastic surgery, they do something for charity and are instantly labelled publicity seekers.

grrrr, sorry, just pisses me off knowing how perfect you all are I suppose Wink

In the 80s and early 90s I had a fun job working in television with lots of celebs and would sometimes attend celeby parties. In that time I met a lot of famous people, most of whom were charming and professional if you spoke with them. There were two that I met in all that time whom I thought were arrogant, big-headed and rude. They were Cilla Black and Jerry Hall. Let's make that three - I'll add in Chris Evans.

Two lovelies that I remember as being delightful were Harry Enfield and Joan Collins.

On another note, this thread has made me think of two of my friends from working class routes; both from very tough backgrounds. Both are the staunchest and most proud Tories you will ever meet. One is a dinner lady, lives in a council house and will be having her benefits cut as we speak, but she still would NEVER vote labour, however much you challenge her on her choice.

MrsDevere. Mean - not really. My opinion of someone. And it doesn't make you mean if you don't like them.

Irrelevant. Aren't most on here.

And it wasn't a poor comparison as it was of the situation not the people. But of course you are entitled to your opinion as am I.

And yes - I rolled my eyes because the Cilla black fan club thing was tongue in cheek but as normal
on here people took it the way they wanted to suit their own ends.

Sansoora what was that about? Really not necessary. I was just trying to make the point that none of us know what 'celebrities' are really like. Our views are mainly formed from the press.

It was certainly not meant as any sort of boast. This is the first time I have mentioned it, so don't understand the nasty response Confused

Bugger me, really ??

So let me get this straight.....

Because she came from the rough end of Liverpool she should have necessarily been humble in demeanour and left the diva histrionics those of supposedly higher social orders?

If so I think I like old Cilla for sticking two fingers up at such twattish presumption.

No-one is entitled to "diva histrionics". Good manners are available to all, regardless of background, social status or financial standing. Lots of people from what you call 'higher social orders' are polite and charming whilst others are rude and arrogant. Good manners has nothing to do with where you were born or what comforts you were born with, but a lot to do with how well you were brought up. And good parenting does not favour rich or poor.

You assumed I was stressed by your patronising "calm down, calm down". I never said I was stressed. You've made an assumption. Assumptions are often at the route of many a slip up.

I repeat ..... Good manners are available to all, regardless of background, social status or financial standing.

My 'calm down, calm down' wasn't intentionally patronising.

It was tongue in cheek, Cilla was a scouser and the phrase is used colloquially to take the piss out of scousers (of which I am one)

In any instance, it seems you and I are conversing at cross purposes. In all probability as a consequence of my woefully plebeian upbringing and lack of social etiquette Wink

(Willingness to take the piss out of myself)

Merry Christmas Queen X

And yes, when i am stressed I probably will swear. I was showing you that your 'calm down, calm down' was unnecessary as I didn't need to swear when I wrote it. My post was quite calm because I was feeling calm when I wrote it.

Luckily ever day is not a school day here - yay!

Again, I wasn't seriously 'telling' you anything.

You do seem oddly serious given the subject matter but I suppose that is neither here nor there.

Many glad and auspicious tidings of the season to you.
