This is hypothetical:

You're single.
You meet a lovely charming man.
He is kind to you, attractive to you and a real gent.
No one has been so kind.
He helps you when you need it.
He gets on with your friends.
He treats you.
The conversation is stimulating.
He defends you.
He is a nice person to you and you feel special.
You spend time together and over time are in a relationship.
You find out off someone else that he is racist.
You've seen no evidence of this before and no conversations have led down this road.
You investigate either by speaking directly to him or by other means and discover that not only is he racist but he is high profile in a racist organisation.
You discover he has committed violent racist acts and treats others of a different race in complete contrast to the way he treats you and makes you feel.

You love him.
He is racist.
What would you do?

Please note that I have not referenced any specific race here.

Sorry I should have said they accept all Muslims as long as they are loyal to daesh. I didn't mean they accept all Muslims.

Helmetbymidnight · 16/12/2015 19:42

Anti semitism is racism.

Murdering other people for their religion is racism.

decisionsdecisions123 · 16/12/2015 20:06

So Ethiopian Jews are from the same race as Israeli Jews then?

Helmetbymidnight · 16/12/2015 20:09

So anti semitism is not racism?

Is there a special dispensation you can get so you can hate Jews (or Muslims) but no way, you're not a racist?

acatcalledjohn · 16/12/2015 20:13

OP, are you in love with Paul Golding perchance?

MultishirkingAgain · 16/12/2015 20:13

In the UK, Jews are considered a race under anti-discrimination legislation.

But the level of acceptance of casual anti-Semitism as "normal" - like your question decisions decisions - in this country is still pretty shocking.

PamDooveOrangeJoof · 16/12/2015 20:28

Is this a reverse? Is it the man posting to find out what she will do?

Krampus · 16/12/2015 20:29

bucking beat me to it.

There are people out there who are charming as long as you conform to their expectations.

decisionsdecisions123 · 16/12/2015 20:29

What was shocking about my question?

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 16/12/2015 20:38

Actually, it's a valid distinction. It doesn't mean that religious bigotry is ok, and hate crimes are hate crimes whether religious or racist. Jews are considered an ethnic group but in terms of actual ethnicity there is a big variation. Judaism as religion and Jewishness as ethnicity are conflated but not the same thing.
I don't believe that hatred on the basis of religion is the same as racism. There is a massive crossover but they are not quite the same thing.

Helmetbymidnight · 16/12/2015 20:53

It's regarded as the same in the law.

When I hear someone say a nasty comment about Muslims, my racist alarm goes off. The same when anti-Semitic comments are made.

I know that generally, neither the anti-Muslim people, nor the anti-Semitic people care to regard themselves as racists but hey, tough titties, that's what they are.

Doublebubblebubble · 16/12/2015 20:56

Leave immediately. Contact the authorities if necessary. Change number. There is no amount of love that can change the fact that I hate racism of any kind. I've said openly that if either of my children were racist id disown them so nothing would stop me leaving a man for the same reasons... Do the right thing I say x

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 16/12/2015 21:03

How is it the same in the law? Do you mean the same category of crime (hate crime)?
I agree, much anti-religious feeling is motivated by racism, but that doesn't mean they are the same thing. It's also not helpful to categorise daesh as a racist organisation as that obfuscates the real motivation and threat.

Helmetbymidnight · 16/12/2015 21:14

I mean all forms of discrimination whether its against those of a certain race or a certain religion is covered by the race discrimination act.

I agree that daesh's racism isn't by a long way our biggest issue with them but yes- they're hatred of non Muslims/attacking Christian groups and Shia Muslims is racism.
And the idea that it's white people in Europe who are racist and IS aren't is simply...bizarre.

decisionsdecisions123 · 16/12/2015 22:13

I find it strange to class religious discrimination as racism as I generally take racism to be against someone's skin colour/country of origin. Surely there must be a better word.

Atenco · 17/12/2015 16:00

I find it strange to class religious discrimination as racism

I think an awful lot of the vile repeated about Islam has a racist basis. Just look at mumsnet, nobody would dare make an anti-black comment, but the racists haven't gone away they just assume that Muslims are brown and identifiable and hide behind a lot of cliches to attack Muslims for being "other".

TheWatchersCouncil · 17/12/2015 16:40

A prominent, violent rascist? Sounds like a keeper!
