Bible from school

DS goes to a standard secondary (not a religious school), he came home last week with a bible.

I remember we got them when we were kids but I had forgotten thought we had moved on since then

DS doesn't believe in God, his choice and nothing to do with us. But I'm just really shocked and irritated at this act, presumably an attempt to spread the word and indoctrinate kids into organised religion.

I am very, very anti organised religion right now, following a historical abuse case involving our family which has just been through the court and involved a vicar, so very aware that I'm probably oversensitive.

Is it me? AIBU?

How effective evangelism might or might not be is not, in my opinion, a relevant point when discussing where it is, and isn't, appropriate for that evangelism to take place.

"I always wonder why people worry so much about their kids being given bibles, what do they think is going to happen"

If you wonder that, then I presume you haven't actually read any of the threads where people have explained with great care why they feel that evangelism of any sort has no place in schools.

Children should be equipped with an understanding of different religions and the role they play in today’s world. But you don't need to give children a bible or a Quoran to do that, unless it's part of specific homework exercise.

Does the school give out copies of Aesop's fables. The complete works of Shakespeare?

No, but presumably if an organisation offered schools free copies of these, the schools would accept.

Two years ago I was in a Greek citizens advice centre that issues many of the documents you need to deal with Greek bureaucracy. There was a stand with leaflets on it. One was about local recycling services, the other was a leaflet about the dangers of abortion. It presented a distorted view of the risks of the various options and finally came out and said that God is against abortion. Would you be happy to see this leaflet in a public building? Given out at a school?

That is why church and state should be completely separate.

The bible is the only book DSs have ever been given at High school. English is done using photocopied bits of books. I don't even think they have a library :(

batshitlady · 18/12/2015 19:42

they'd probably flog them celtic.

And if this school was offered a lorry load of free bibles (?) they should do the same.
