To throw away ugly Xmas cards I receive?

BollockSandwich · 11/12/2015 11:48

Some of the Xmas cards we've received this year are really horrible, gaudy, cheap looking things.

I don't want ugly cards on display in my house so I want to just keep the nice ones that fit with my colour scheme.

DH said he doesn't care and also doesn't want ugly cards up.

My friend came around today and was horrified by the idea that I wouldn't display every card we get, no matter how ugly.

So WIBU to dump all of the cards I don't like? We don't have any visitors over Xmas so no risk of offending anyone by this if they come and don't see their card up.

I haven't sent xmas cards for a few years now as I feel they are just a waste. Luckily we receive very few as well. The three we have so far are just lying down on the coffee table atm. They'll probably stay there too.

Thank goodness squoosh. I think last year someone on here was being judgy about crackers being downmarket/tacky.

I think hat quality is important when choosing crackers.

wasonthelist · 11/12/2015 15:51

When I die off, some collector of vintage Christmas ephemera will hit the jackpot at my estate sale
I doubt it.

Bettercallsaul1 · 11/12/2015 16:00

I go for joke quality - choice is generally "very low" or "non-existent". However, agree that crackers, like robins, are non-negotiable at Christmas.

RiverTam · 11/12/2015 16:04

Tinsel is great! It reflects the tree lights (coloured, of course) and is so lovely and sparkly!

Sparklingbrook · 11/12/2015 16:05

I get disappointed if I don't see one of those curly fish that you put in your hand out of a cracker at Christmas. not keen on mini tape measures/spinning tops/hairslides/metal puzzles.

squoosh · 11/12/2015 16:06

Anyone who thinks Christmas crackers are downmarket and tacky should be shunned by decent society.

I think the bit that the OP is missing is that many people see a Christmas tree as a family tradition, as something that reminds them of the past. Getting the old decorations out, which might not be the most fashionable right this minute, is sentimental - if you don't really see Christmas as a time for sentimentiality, for looking back at previous years, a time for traditions and your family's small private history. A time for taking stock.

Christmas isn't about food and gifts, but people. (and faith for those who have it!). Old decorations aren't just about stuff, they remind us of the people involved.

If you aren't a very sentimental person, if you judge a christmas decoration purely off it's aesthetics, then this might seen odd to you. You might see a mis-matched tree and just think it looks a bit crap, without seeing the meaning behind it. If you are just seeing a bunch of crappily made decorations, then you might think it's rubbish, whereas other people see the care and thought that went into their (and other peoples) DCs creations.

The OP clearly doesn't do "emotional" side of stuff. Which is fine, but it feels odd and cold to a lot of people, most people do see the emotions tied up with Christmas traditions.

and teal tree decorations always look a bit crap, like they have been produced in some corporate colours for Barclays bank branches and you've just nicked their tree

I put my cards on a string. The kids like the string, I used to like it when my mum did it when I was a kid. They don't fall over or get up in the way.

And floating in mid air, they are high above the colour scheme they may destroy for you.

Aeroflotgirl · 11/12/2015 16:34

you sound lovely op, just hide them at the back and put the more desirable ones at the front. I could never bring myself to throw away, cards that people have taken the trouble and time and money to post.

ThursdayLastWeek · 11/12/2015 17:29

My cards all go on string too - held up by little pegs with felt reindeer stuck to them.

I luffs them.

I also totally agree with Dinosaurs and also the pp who said they like to but a new decoration each year, or as a souvenir.

Looking at Instagram I think teal must be in this year.

But presumably the OP loves her white tree and teal decs, just like lots of people love their multicoloured baubles and green trees. Just because she's being grumpy grinch doesn't mean we have to join in. [santa]
It's Christmas innit. 🎄🍾

Wagglebees · 11/12/2015 18:30

Again, waggle, like tinsel it's not quite so nice picking it up in dog poo in the garden

Nothing wrong with a festive poo. ✨💩✨ Makes it easier to see.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 11/12/2015 18:35

ConfusedInBath 😂😂😂😂😂

hownottofuckup · 11/12/2015 18:55

I get terribly attached to xmas decorations, I can't bring myself to ease out the old angel so we now have a semi headless no winged angel atop our tree.
It looks abit shit actually.
Couldn't cope with a white tree though!

CFSsucks · 11/12/2015 18:56

Was also coming to say 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 confusedinbath.

CFSsucks · 11/12/2015 18:58

hownotto that's probably not as bad as my nans shirty decoration she refuses to bin. It's a bizarre dolls head with a bit of wire for a body with some peachy net wrapped around said wire, net it ripped and coming off the wire. It isn't handmade (she actually bought this shite) and she refused to part with it. The amazing star I painstakingly made as a 6 year old is long lost though!

CFSsucks · 11/12/2015 18:59

shitty not shirty ffs!

Bambooshoots14 · 11/12/2015 19:06

confused Grin I was going to say the same thing

Outaboutnowt · 11/12/2015 19:39

Bloody hell what a bizarre thread!
You must have a lot of time on your hands OP to obsess about your Christmas colour scheme and which cards make the cut.
If a 'perfect' tree is your thing fair enough but I think it's sad that your kids make decorations at school and they're never good enough to go on the tree.

The only weird thing I do with cards is put out some of the same ones year after year - for example there's one from a good friend of mine who died a few years ago, and one my niece made me at school when she was little. I like having those ones up every year.

You'd probably be sick if you saw our tree - it's a hot mess of badly spread out mis match baubles nothing matches and tacky lights. But I love it, DS is only little still so I expect it will get worse over the years when he starts helping me decorate and makes stuff at school to go on the tree. Im hoping to make lovely memories, anyway, I'm not so bothered about an immaculate tree and coordinating cards.

Wagglebees · 11/12/2015 19:51

CFS We need a photo of that beauty.
