To throw away ugly Xmas cards I receive?

BollockSandwich · 11/12/2015 11:48

Some of the Xmas cards we've received this year are really horrible, gaudy, cheap looking things.

I don't want ugly cards on display in my house so I want to just keep the nice ones that fit with my colour scheme.

DH said he doesn't care and also doesn't want ugly cards up.

My friend came around today and was horrified by the idea that I wouldn't display every card we get, no matter how ugly.

So WIBU to dump all of the cards I don't like? We don't have any visitors over Xmas so no risk of offending anyone by this if they come and don't see their card up.

I recycle cards asap, hate having them anywhere in the house. Make unnecessary clutter imo.
But yabu about your scheme.
Our tree is about as naff as it comes, multicoloured lights, random assortment of decorations from when the dc were very little, things they made at preschool, old saltdough Angels we made and painted, and as for the Angel on the top, well I won't tell you what it's made from!
However we have a real tree and we haven't got it yet so I'm feeling a bit jealous of everyone with theirs up already!

CakeNinja · 11/12/2015 14:58

thecats I love your ds decoration, how cute!

WeThreeMythicalKings · 11/12/2015 15:00

Teal and white? A bit chav B&Q for my taste.

Christmas colours are red, green and gold - that never dates. Pink and lime green are vile as well.

Badders123 · 11/12/2015 15:01

We have 2 trees...one real in the main room and an ikea fake one in the boys tv room.
The fake one has lights that also play festive music!!!!! Yes. I know. My house is awesome :)
We also have a couple of those m and s musical biscuit tins that the dc love to start up at 7am
Can't wait for the star wars baubles to arrive. The will up the awesomeness to unbearable levels, frankly.

A few cards are nice but I also hate clutter. It's the ones from DDs classmates that drive me nuts.

thecatsarecrazy your new decoration is very cute. I would be proud to have that on my tree too.

I haven't decorated my house or put any cards up yet. But it will be happening this weekend once I've given the house a good pre-Christmas clean.

I have noticed cards this year are cheaper looking. Don't know whether that's a sign people are cutting back on the expense or they are becoming old fashioned. Never the less they will all be displayed along with all the random things the DC have ever made.

shebird · 11/12/2015 15:02

With 2 DCs that's almost 60 of those little cards that keep falling over.

Wagglebees · 11/12/2015 15:03

The reindeer decoration is brilliant.

People feel quite strongly about cards and colour schemes don't they? Who knew.

For what it's worth, I really like robin cards. They seem to be on a lot of them this year too.

RiverTam · 11/12/2015 15:03

Am I the only one finding the concept of unnecessary clutter at Christmas a bit of a contradiction in terms? (I was going to say oxymoron but I'm not entirely sure that's right?) I mean, surely by that reckoning each and every decoration, let alone a sodding great tree, is unnecessary clutter?

Bettercallsaul1 · 11/12/2015 15:06

Absolutely, RiverTam - it's the season of excess, and meant to be.

LeaLeander · 11/12/2015 15:06

So the "point of Christmas" is to display ugly clutter just because someone else gave it/made it/selected it at a store? Who knew.

So sanctimonious. Why is it "sad" to bin the cards any more than it's "sad" to toss a gift bag, bow or wrapping paper? I've toiled over wrapping only to see it ripped away and tossed aside without even a moment's remark on the thought or effort that went into it, let alone attempt to preserve (the embellishements, obviously, not the ripped paper.) Why is a card any different?

The card was opened, sentiment read, done. No need to keep it lying about unless it's pleasing to the eye. And I personally don't find reindeer dressed in hunting gear or kiddie pix or religious scenes pleasing to the eye. Off to recycling they go! (Cards I like, however, I keep for years - have stacks of them. When I die off, some collector of vintage Christmas ephemera will hit the jackpot at my estate sale..)

When we were little my parents used traditional ornaments on the main tree but had a second artificial tree (one of those silvery aluminum ones with a revolving color wheel beneath it) in the basement near a bar / socializing area they had set up there. We kids were free to decorate it with our handmade items, some of which I still have - a cardboard tube from paper towels blobbed with glue and glitter, a small yogurt cup with a cotton puff "snow scene" glued inside, etc. But seeing trees today decorated with Minions, Star Wars, Disney claptrap because it's what the kids gravitate to, not for me.

GinIsTheBestChristmasSpirit · 11/12/2015 15:06

My thought was also this

Teal, silver and snowflakes I very much hope.

I may have actually snorted when it was so close!

I care not for colour schemes but do care about the people who send me cards so I would proudly display them, even the shit ones (which I have in abundance this year)

I'm just here to grin at your username, BollockSandwich GrinGrin

squoosh · 11/12/2015 15:09

I think everyone in the household should have some say over what goes on the tree.

squoosh · 11/12/2015 15:10

No Keeper of the Tree here.

Sparklingbrook · 11/12/2015 15:12

The point of Christmas is probably just to do whatever you want without feeling the need to run it past the AIBU topic of MN first Wink

Is it still okay to have crackers? As long as they are good quality obvs.

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 11/12/2015 15:34

Grin @chrome

CF yes its appalling shocking lack of manners.

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 11/12/2015 15:35

BTW BIG TINSEL fan here.

gotta have the smell.

squoosh · 11/12/2015 15:36

Crackers are a NON-NEGOTIABLE. One year we forgot the crackers, people still talk about it in melancholy tones

'remember the year we didn't have crackers?'
'ah yes, it was a dark time'
