To throw away ugly Xmas cards I receive?

BollockSandwich · 11/12/2015 11:48

Some of the Xmas cards we've received this year are really horrible, gaudy, cheap looking things.

I don't want ugly cards on display in my house so I want to just keep the nice ones that fit with my colour scheme.

DH said he doesn't care and also doesn't want ugly cards up.

My friend came around today and was horrified by the idea that I wouldn't display every card we get, no matter how ugly.

So WIBU to dump all of the cards I don't like? We don't have any visitors over Xmas so no risk of offending anyone by this if they come and don't see their card up.

RiverTam Hmm Who the fuck would ever tell someone their cards are ugly? Erm, did you mean to be so rude. Imagine the AIBU:
AIBU to tell PILs/BIL/Friend that their card is ugly and I'm throwing it away?

Confused

A co-ordinated tree sounds hideous to me. I do like white and teal together though (but in a Scandinavian kind of way, if that makes sense...)

Sparklingbrook · 11/12/2015 13:09

Trees with higgledy piggledy decorations look like they should be sitting in the foyer of an old folks home.

Confused

Doesn't really seem in the spirit of Christmas to bin cards.

Sparkling That's my point, it's personal taste. I hate higgledy piggledy trees with (what I perceive to be) ugly kids christmas shite on it. Other people hate co-ordinated trees. Fine, just personal taste.

What, no robins and candles? The cards I've sent out this year all have robins on. I picked them all from the John Lewis and Paperchase individual card stands if that makes it any better.

This is probably why I never get cards in return from anyone; not even my mum.

Sad
Sparklingbrook · 11/12/2015 13:13

I am beginning to wonder what your point is OP.

BollockSandwich · 11/12/2015 13:13

Maryz No I don't have them on the fridge, it looks a mess. We have a pinboard-type thing in our hallway and most goes on there

It's not just personal taste though. It reflects a certain attitude towards those children's handiwork that I find a bit cold.

squoosh · 11/12/2015 13:13

I like to buy Christmas tree decorations when I'm on my travels as a memento. Museum and art gallery gift shops are great for these.

So every years when putting up the tree there's a lot of 'oh do you remember that time we went to X and bought this?'

You're doing exactly that behind their backs. You sound very shallow, and a coward - you want to go something that is pretty mean-spirited of you at best but you wouldn't have the balls to actually tell anyone you do this.

And you're asking if you're being unreasonable???? You actually need to ask???

PaulAnkaTheDog · 11/12/2015 13:17

I thought white trees were hideous/gaudy/tacky. And teal decorations on them made them worse. They were a few years ago anyway. I doubt a few Christmas cards would make it look tackier bad. Not really in the spirit of the season either.

needastrongone · 11/12/2015 13:18

Op, thanks for the reply. I can see you do give to charity/recycle your decorations. Trouble is, you then go and buy another one, which has had to be manufactured, use more resources etc. Seems a shame, that's all.

Even with the DC at teens, we have a tradition of each buying a bauble from the local garden centre , all together we walk up there and choose. The tree is an eclectic mix of memories. When they were little, they could decorate the tree too, all the bauble used to end up on one branch Smile

RiverTam · 11/12/2015 13:18

Just seen your comment about 'ugly kids Christmas shite' ShockHmm. You really haven't a clue what Christmas is about, have you? Or life in general.

findingmyfeet12 · 11/12/2015 13:19

I also agree with a previous posters in-laws about co-ordinating being naff (only my opinion). It's the kind of thing i'd expect to see at the Bekhams' house.

squoosh · 11/12/2015 13:19

I do think white Christmas trees are ferociously pretty tacky. I could only contemplate one if I lived inside a 1950s Doris Day/Rock Hudson film.

IWasHereBeforeTheHack · 11/12/2015 13:23

It's the thought that counts.

WitchWay · 11/12/2015 13:26

I keep most of ours in a heap on the hall table. Ones from family & close friends are displayed on the mantelpiece, along with any particularly beautiful ones.

My PILs have got a tree stuff with decorations they've collected over 35 years and most that DH and his siblings made as kids. It gives me a headache.

Oh that sounds just like my tree!!

I try to buy a new decoration every year - preferably from somewhere we have been on holiday. It always makes me smile and reminisce when we get them out. And yes there are decorations on there which DD made in nursery (she is 20 now). Personal taste I know but I think it looks just lovely and like a Christmas tree should. It will be a real one of course.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 11/12/2015 13:26

squoosh oh good, it's not just me! I have images of feature walls and wooden wall signs, filled with inspirational quotes, when I think of them.

BollockSandwich · 11/12/2015 13:27

findingmyfeet Christmas at the Beckham's sounds amazing.

RiverTam No, I don't have a clue what life's about Hmm but I do really enjoy being patronised so thanks ever so much for that.

I like robins, Icrackedup! As far as I'm concerned, the more traditional the better. I would be disappointed not to get at least one robin amongst my Christmas cards.
