To urge you all to buy a jar of coconut oil?

Some parts of this might be TMI, and I apologise in advance for that.

A few months ago, I had a boyfriend who had an unfortunate penis condition called balanitis, where it would get red, itchy and sore. The doctor prescribed him steroid cream and it did nothing to help, and in fact thinned the skin so much that his banjo string snapped Shock

I did some reading on the Internet, and found a forum saying someone had cured his balanitis with coconut oil. I suggested it to my bf and he gave it a go, his condition cleared up within a few days by applying coconut oil.

I bought a jar of it myself this week as it was on offer on Amazon. So far, I've tried it out on thrush...I woke up with a definite case of it, got a lump out of the jar (it's solid and melts on contact), ummmm inserted it, and hey presto, instant relief and no symptoms since.

Then yesterday I had a mega spot. Like the kind of spot that takes up half of your face and would normally take 3 weeks to heal. I applied coconut oil to it several times yesterday, and when I woke up this morning the spot had pretty much gone.

I've also been putting it on my hands and feet, where I get stress eczema, and it provides instant relief, and seems to be clearing it up.

Other things that it can apparently cure are nappy rash, impetigo, most kinds of infections (can be ingested if it's an internal thing), and loads more, do some googling.

Anyway, felt like I had to share. I'm well chuffed that for 6 quid I have a product that seems to deal with a lot of common health problems, and it actually works (and fast)!

I was ignorant also - many thanks!!!!!

IoraRua · 05/12/2015 12:47

Oh well Doreen is clearly just a delightful specimen of humanity. Ignore, OP.

I used to use coconut oil on my hair but used it up and completely forgot to reorder. Must go do that!

UnGoogleable · 05/12/2015 12:47

Will it kill my gnarly fungal nail infection?

MrsUnderwood · 05/12/2015 12:48

I use it as a hair mask. If you're going to dye your hair you can slather it on before hand and it'll help minimise damage.

Enjolrass · 05/12/2015 12:49

Then I wonder what the craze is doing to the lives of farmers in the countries that grow coconuts.

If you buy it from a reputable source it's actually doing a lot of good for those farmers

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 05/12/2015 12:49

Ok Doreen, I'll ask mumsnet HQ to edit the title.

No, wait, that would be an utterly pointless waste of everyone's time.

Is there anything you'd like to talk about? You seem very tetchy.

OP posts:
Enjolrass · 05/12/2015 12:50

Don't use it as an spf, use a proper one

VulcanWoman · 05/12/2015 12:51

Bert you could be absolutely right but the fact is I have a cheaper moisturiser with no harmful chemicals in it, I'm happy.

DoreenLethal · 05/12/2015 12:53

It has a SPF of 10 - which means it IS a proper one. For light sun.

BertrandRussell · 05/12/2015 12:57

"If you buy it from a reputable source it's actually doing a lot of good for those farmers"

That's good news. Could you provide a link, please?

Enjolrass · 05/12/2015 12:57

My make up is spf 30, still not a proper one, imo.

Cerseirys · 05/12/2015 13:01

I wouldn't rely on coconut oil as an sunscreen, as I doubt it's broad spectrum. Far better to use an actual sunscreen of at least 15+.

VestalVirgin · 05/12/2015 13:01

I was aware of coconut oil and its many uses. From fungus to head lice, there is almost nothing it is not alleged to help against.

I don't get why anyone would object to being told again. People should not be made afraid of sharing useful information just because some other people might have known about it for ages.

PurpleDaisies · 05/12/2015 13:01

What do you mean by "light sun"? Even on a cloudy day about 80% of uv rays will still pass through the atmosphere. Dermatologists recommend at least spf 30.

Enjolrass · 05/12/2015 13:04

That's good news. Could you provide a link, please?

Or you could look it up yourself.

I can't link the converstation so have had with producers the Philippines. I work in the Fitness industry so have spent time looking at it.

The ones who supply Lucy Bee seem very happy.

Some companies are exploiting farmers. Like tesco and the dairy farmers.

As consumers it's up to us to look up the company we are spending our money with, if we have concerns.

Cerseirys · 05/12/2015 13:06

Also important is to apply it correctly - most people apply too little sunscreen and rub it in, when in fact it should be applied as a layer on the face and left to absorb for 15-20 minutes before heading outside. That's why it's a good idea to wear sunscreen under your foundation, even if it has a sunscreen, as you're unlikely to apply enough foundation to provide adequate protection.

noeffingidea · 05/12/2015 13:10

No thanks, OP. I already have things that do what coconut oil is supposed to do, for much cheaper. Like toothpaste, hair conditioner, moisturiser, etc.

BertrandRussell · 05/12/2015 13:10

I have tried. Couldn't find anything. Just assumed you would have links at your fingertips because you sounded so authoritative.

HermioneWeasley · 05/12/2015 13:12

Bertrand it's the Scheinhardt Wig Company with the surplus. (30 rock joke)

I've used coconut oil for years, I cook with it, bake with it, use it on my hair, use it to remove make up... it has a tonne of uses. I buy mine from the local African supermarket as it's only £2.50 a jar, whereas it's £10 in Tesco and £15 in Holland and Barrett.

ohmymimi · 05/12/2015 13:30

I found out about coconut oil on MN, and agree with Little; it's a great, multi-use product. I buy it from Naissance on Amazon, 1kilo @ £8.99, p&p £1.25ish. I decant it into various sized pots for handbag, bedside, bathroom, and the kilo lasts me around a year - in my book that's good value.

Enjolrass · 05/12/2015 13:31

Shockingly some people know things because their work involves speaking directly to people.

Not because they can google it. Confused

Jibberjabberjooo · 05/12/2015 13:37

I can't stand coconut, the smell of it makes me want to heave so I won't be buying it.

PrincessMouse · 05/12/2015 13:38

Little. I agree coconut oil is amazing.

  • I use it to cook (IMO, makes the tastiest scrambled egg - no milk) anything that requires oil. You can also get Fry Light Coconut oil if preferred.
  • I use it as a night treatment for my face. Wash etc. then put a load on my face and neck before bed. It's also recommended on the eye lid because it's so light.
  • I use it on my feet. I used to have really dry skin on my feet and it worked wonders.
  • I try to use it once a week on my hair as a treatment if I am not heading out

I love it
