To urge you all to buy a jar of coconut oil?

Some parts of this might be TMI, and I apologise in advance for that.

A few months ago, I had a boyfriend who had an unfortunate penis condition called balanitis, where it would get red, itchy and sore. The doctor prescribed him steroid cream and it did nothing to help, and in fact thinned the skin so much that his banjo string snapped Shock

I did some reading on the Internet, and found a forum saying someone had cured his balanitis with coconut oil. I suggested it to my bf and he gave it a go, his condition cleared up within a few days by applying coconut oil.

I bought a jar of it myself this week as it was on offer on Amazon. So far, I've tried it out on thrush...I woke up with a definite case of it, got a lump out of the jar (it's solid and melts on contact), ummmm inserted it, and hey presto, instant relief and no symptoms since.

Then yesterday I had a mega spot. Like the kind of spot that takes up half of your face and would normally take 3 weeks to heal. I applied coconut oil to it several times yesterday, and when I woke up this morning the spot had pretty much gone.

I've also been putting it on my hands and feet, where I get stress eczema, and it provides instant relief, and seems to be clearing it up.

Other things that it can apparently cure are nappy rash, impetigo, most kinds of infections (can be ingested if it's an internal thing), and loads more, do some googling.

Anyway, felt like I had to share. I'm well chuffed that for 6 quid I have a product that seems to deal with a lot of common health problems, and it actually works (and fast)!

Thanks SirCh - hair also the bane of my life, am continually searching for the holy grail.

SirChenjin · 06/12/2015 19:09

Just use it sparingly - but it's really good. Someone actually said my hair was looking "very sleek" recently - no-one has ever, ever said that before Grin

lljkk · 06/12/2015 20:17

Coconut oil makes my skin sting. Absolutely nothing else does.

coffeeslave · 07/12/2015 14:53

The KTC brand oil doesn't taste of coconut (to me!) - I fry my eggs in it in the morning & they just taste like eggs Grin

IMHO it's useful for cooking because it has a really high smoke point and doesn't burn, like butter & veg oil can.

y0rkier0se · 07/12/2015 18:12

Ooooh I love coconut oil. Has cured the dogs pyoderma and my carpet burn (fell down the stairs!)

Morebiscuitsplease · 07/12/2015 18:22

Used with Aloe Vera, it has helped my daughter's excema hugely. She uses that to hydrate the skin. Thanks to Mumsnet for turning me onto it. When I mentioned it to the practice nurse she said people found it very useful.

lutrinae · 07/12/2015 19:53

It works really well for my psoriasis bimandbam. I have to apply it a few times a day bit cleared it up when nothing else would.

ghostyslovesheep · 07/12/2015 20:08

hmmm

well I'll pass to be honest - people who are overly evangelical about the latest wonder cure all make my teeth itch - sorry

I'll stick to good old Aldi face cream

ghostyslovesheep · 07/12/2015 20:10

see Nutrogena Scalp Shampoo stuff worked brilliantly for my horrible scalp eczema but I wouldn't suggest rubbing it on your penis or labia

Senpai · 07/12/2015 20:40

I feel so boring. I only use food products for cooking. Grin

Christina22xx · 07/12/2015 22:43

used it for years and you can get it in the ethnic isles at tesco, cost about £2 on amazon its more expensive

Garlick · 08/12/2015 07:02

No, it has a middling smoke point. Higher than butter but lower than rapeseed, soy, sunflower, corn or grapeseed oil. If you like to fry in very hot butter you can use ghee, which has a smoke point 25% higher (+50°c) than coconut oil.

SmashingInAthleticWear · 08/12/2015 11:14

The deodorant thing baffles me. Doesn't it make your clothes all greasy? Eww. I love it for cooking because I love coconut, but I think I'll stop there, unless someone discovers its miracle weight loss properties.

BertrandRussell · 08/12/2015 12:13

I thought it had a lower smoke point than vegetable oil? Higher than butter, though.
It's a good, if greasy moisturiser. And good for the hair-but once again-greasy. Everything else is just bollocks pseudoscience.

PrincessMouse · 08/12/2015 21:04

Tried removing make up with it as suggested. It's brilliant.....

SirChenjin · 08/12/2015 21:25

Bertrand - doesn't make my hair greasy, it makes it lovely and shiny (which is a first). Obviously if you dollop it on then it will be greasy, but used sparingly it's amazing stuff.

abigamarone · 08/12/2015 21:34

Leaves my normally thick full wavy (yet a little dry) hair lank and flat when I've tried it. Even when I've spent what seems like hours rinsing it out.

It's lovely on toasted crumpets though.

I won't be trying it as a sunscreen.

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 08/12/2015 22:54

I tried putting it on my frizzy nightmare hair last night after I'd washed it (just used a tiny bit), and my hair has been amazingly shiny and frizz free today. Much better than the serums I've been forking out loads of money on over the years!

OP posts:
TheDowagerCuntess · 08/12/2015 23:07

I've used it on my thick, coarse, frizzy hair for a couple of days now, and it feels/looks remarkably swooshy.

I'll reserve judgement though - as my hair is notorious for seemingly reacting well to things, only to revert to type after a few uses.

Fingers crossed!

I cured mine after many, many years of suffering.
This is not medical advise & may be bad for you (disclaimer, as have no idea)
I'm an older man, suffered on & off forever!, v.rarely that bad but slightly red more often than not. sore & itchy fair bit, perhaps a few times a year needed Daktacort (steroid cream). tried saline washing, just lots of cleaning & drying (without soaps) all the usual stuff. even coconut oil, think helped a little but not great.
This is going to sound strange & bit horrible I guess.
Cured 99% and been 8+ weeks now so not a brief interlude. never ever been close to that length without some problems.
When I clean my teeth in the morning get the usual foam & froth.
I let a lot dribble down on to my winkie & make sure covers whole of the head, (do use fingers if necessary) Not easy trying to avoid my belly but is possible.
Within a few days no redness, pinker than ever before.
Leave it on for not even a minute but don't wash off, just put foreskin back.

I read years ago something about toothpaste but think tried neat, stung like hell & never repeated but the other week came up with this idea.

Now as I say, perhaps something in toothpaste that could be harmful, not designed to be put there but I guess if in the mouth & injested cannot be too bad for you generally. Also your saliva not usually there but perhaps a strangers from time to time if lucky. Try at your own risk but wish I had done 10/20 years ago.

UK Sensodyne & repair/protect (likely same for all types would think, perhaps it has some ingredients so mention)

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 17/07/2025 14:58

Thanks for this! I get thrush often and didn't know. Cheaper than Canasten!

Katemax82 · 17/07/2025 15:20

DoreenLethal · 05/12/2015 11:45

I've had jars of coconut oil for years.

Please do not presume that everyone is ignorant of things just because you are.

10 year old thread and its all been debunked!

It gets rid of nappy rash within hours. I'm trying it on cradle cap too. And it also works as a massage oil.

i use it on cradle cap too its great

They sell it in normal supermarkets too with the other oils. Don't buy it in a bottle with a thin neck Confused I have no idea why they sell it that way. Jars are better.

It is a good moisturiser and the fact it's solid at room temperature but melts at body temperature makes it feel intriguing but it's definitely not a wonder product.

Should note - it was going around like wildfire in a local group that it was great used as an, er, intimate massager. Then somebody got pregnant. They hadn't realised that as it's oil based, it should never be used with condoms. Be aware! Just because something is natural doesn't mean it's safe in all situations.

Also I second what Merde said. I've heard of this before. BTW anecdotally, "tight banjo" is linked to tongue and lip tie in babies. If anyone has a baby boy who had to have one cut then it's something to maybe inform them of when they become teenagers. Most boys apparently break theirs while masturbating, and then panic, but it isn't dangerous and doesn't cause a problem, normally heals up by itself as long as the area is kept clean.

Interesting re the tight banjo. Both my DS had to have tongue tie snipped so that will be an interesting conversation...

And coconut oil is great for the privates (helps my lichen sclerosis and clears up a mild dose of thrush) but definitely not if you are using condoms for contraception. I always remember the sex ed around condoms telling you not to use them with baby oil as a lubricant- the thought of baby oil down there horrified me! Since we all had that drummed into us, I'm amazed they didn't realise coconut oil would have the same effect on a condom.
