To urge you all to buy a jar of coconut oil?

Some parts of this might be TMI, and I apologise in advance for that.

A few months ago, I had a boyfriend who had an unfortunate penis condition called balanitis, where it would get red, itchy and sore. The doctor prescribed him steroid cream and it did nothing to help, and in fact thinned the skin so much that his banjo string snapped Shock

I did some reading on the Internet, and found a forum saying someone had cured his balanitis with coconut oil. I suggested it to my bf and he gave it a go, his condition cleared up within a few days by applying coconut oil.

I bought a jar of it myself this week as it was on offer on Amazon. So far, I've tried it out on thrush...I woke up with a definite case of it, got a lump out of the jar (it's solid and melts on contact), ummmm inserted it, and hey presto, instant relief and no symptoms since.

Then yesterday I had a mega spot. Like the kind of spot that takes up half of your face and would normally take 3 weeks to heal. I applied coconut oil to it several times yesterday, and when I woke up this morning the spot had pretty much gone.

I've also been putting it on my hands and feet, where I get stress eczema, and it provides instant relief, and seems to be clearing it up.

Other things that it can apparently cure are nappy rash, impetigo, most kinds of infections (can be ingested if it's an internal thing), and loads more, do some googling.

Anyway, felt like I had to share. I'm well chuffed that for 6 quid I have a product that seems to deal with a lot of common health problems, and it actually works (and fast)!

Jux- if you do tell people about the thrush thing - the instructions on the Internet were to soak a natural (health food shop type) tampon in it. I didn't have any of them so I just whacked a lump of it up there, quickly, because it melts fast, and it did the trick.

I do love coconut oil, find it is a great moisteriser. I am a bit doubtful of it's medicinal claims though, healing thrush, suncream and other ills. I don't mean to pee on anyone's coconut tree but some things just seem to beg belief.

TheSpectreOfMorningtonCrescent · 05/12/2015 14:32

Only two problems with it, it smells of coconut and tastes of coconut (yes it does) I know who knew eh? 🙀
Second only to marzipan in horribleness. But glad it worked for you.

Potatoface2 · 05/12/2015 14:38

most cases of balanitis are caused by a tight foreskin.....maybe thats why his banjo string snapped.....also poor hygiene/thrush/smegma....all being continually passed on.....and i cant understand any GP prescribing a steroid cream for a penis, you need to get rid of the cause before treating the inflammation....never put steroid cream on sensative areas..ever!

bruffin · 05/12/2015 14:38

Bigbuttons
There are no benefits to eating it over any other vegetable oil

NinjaLeprechaun · 05/12/2015 14:41

"it doesn't make the food taste coconutty at all."
Yes, it absolutely does. The only reason I know that my mum uses it on her roast potatoes is that I commented that they tasted like coconut.
She then proceeded to inform me that it doesn't affect the flavour. Hmm

Enjolrass · 05/12/2015 14:51

It's not difficult to grasp really.

It is meant to have lads of health benefits. None which are proven.

However, many people find it helps spots, hair, scalp, skin etc so use it.

I don't need for the claims to be scientifically proven to know I like the taste and and that mine, dh and dds skin complaints have cleared up.

I always find it weird when people say they like something and everyone shouts about evidence.

The evidence I need, I have.

And yes it bloody does taste of coconut.

If it doesn't smell or taste of coconut you have bought refined coconut oil that is usually extracted using chemicals rather than pressed.

It's not the same thing. Incidentally Extra virgin and Virgin are exactly the same. It's not like olive oil.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 05/12/2015 14:52

Ninja I've never noticed it and no one else here has said "Oi Diego, what's with the coconut taste".

partialderivative · 05/12/2015 14:52

Oh dear, I'm not sure I should ask.

But what does a banjo string breaking mean in this context?

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 05/12/2015 14:55

Who'd have thought a post about coconut oil would have so many replies.

For the record I have bought Biona Organic Coconut Oil which isn't refined, I still didn't think my food tasted of coconut.

IfNotNowThenWhenever · 05/12/2015 14:57

Nrft, but I found it totally cured thrush too, when nothing else was working. Just the bog standard cheap stuff too.

Garlick · 05/12/2015 15:00

This thread is like bad science bingo. Grin Yeah.

I go through the odd coconut oil phase, however I get better moisturising results with almond oil and find olive oil makes a very good hair-rescue treatment. After I rediscovered lard, I went back to cooking with it :)

Don't put oil on burns. Ever.
Effect on eczema & psoriasis unpredictable - like any oil treatment.
Swilling your mouth with water for 20 minutes will have the same effect.
Coconut oil has no magic antibacterial properties.
Tea tree oil does have magic antibacterial properties; it isn't actually an oil.
When people talk about putting coconut oil in their coffee, they mean the cream from tinned coconut milk. Coconut oil in coffee is disgusting.
End of contribution!

The80sweregreat · 05/12/2015 15:01

Not heard of it before. Will give it a go!

Garlick · 05/12/2015 15:02

Bio yoghurt can cure thrush, and that's proper science! (bacteria & yeast are natural enemies)

It's good for dog's too. A bit in their dinner and their coat's will be lovely. Most of us dog showies use it with our dogs when it's shedding time.

AllMyBestFriendsAreMetalheads · 05/12/2015 15:06

I used coconut oil to get rid of my kids cradle cap, worked overnight.

Not sure I'd want to cook food in it though.

IfNotNowThenWhenever · 05/12/2015 15:08

I think coconut oil does have antibacterial properties though..I just tried it cos I was going nuts with the itching at night, and thrush was cleared up within a couple of weeks. I had been using all the usual things, and nothing else worked.
Coconut oil is magical so there Garlick.

Enjolrass · 05/12/2015 15:09

When people talk about putting coconut oil in their coffee they mean the cream from tinned coconut milk.

No they don't. You put coconut oil in black coffee and whizz it up with a hand/stick blender. When it's been blended it looks like coffee with milk.

Some people may be speaking about creamed coconut or coconut milk. But lots of people use coconut oil.

Some people believe it's a good preworkout and/ or helps lose fat.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 05/12/2015 15:10

It's not for me, did nothing for my eczema, made my hair lanky and I hate having to chisel it out of the jar for cooking, bits fly out everywhere and make a mess. I tried the oil pulling once and nearly threw up. I'm glad it's working for you and your DH though.

bruffin · 05/12/2015 15:11

Ifnotnowthen
Thrush can clear up by itself . I used to get it for 2 days after my pwriod. It always cleared up by itself. Two weeks is a long time for it to take to get better

DeirdreDoo · 05/12/2015 15:15

So you shove it up your foof because you have thrush

and your bloke puts it on his cock because he too has thrush something different Hmm

What about some canesten for both of you?

As for puttig it on burns - words fail me.

This is like bleddy forever living. Have we turned into facebook?

Pisghetti · 05/12/2015 15:17

Wait wait wait - what does bimandbam do to their hairy pony with coconut oil??

P.s. Did naff all for DD's nappy rash.

IfNotNowThenWhenever · 05/12/2015 15:17

No bruffin I see what you are saying, but I am talking months with it, back and forth to the docs. I still use coconut oil intermittently to prevent re occurence. I have no idea why it works, but it does.

Vey funny clip, whoever posted that! Nearly as good as the gluten free one.

mmgirish · 05/12/2015 15:18

My son had a very serious health problem as a baby. As a result, he wasn't able to consume enough calories. We were advised to add coconut oil into expressed breast milk to boost calories. Apparently it has similiar type of fat as breast milk. It was a miracle product.
