To urge you all to buy a jar of coconut oil?

Some parts of this might be TMI, and I apologise in advance for that.

A few months ago, I had a boyfriend who had an unfortunate penis condition called balanitis, where it would get red, itchy and sore. The doctor prescribed him steroid cream and it did nothing to help, and in fact thinned the skin so much that his banjo string snapped Shock

I did some reading on the Internet, and found a forum saying someone had cured his balanitis with coconut oil. I suggested it to my bf and he gave it a go, his condition cleared up within a few days by applying coconut oil.

I bought a jar of it myself this week as it was on offer on Amazon. So far, I've tried it out on thrush...I woke up with a definite case of it, got a lump out of the jar (it's solid and melts on contact), ummmm inserted it, and hey presto, instant relief and no symptoms since.

Then yesterday I had a mega spot. Like the kind of spot that takes up half of your face and would normally take 3 weeks to heal. I applied coconut oil to it several times yesterday, and when I woke up this morning the spot had pretty much gone.

I've also been putting it on my hands and feet, where I get stress eczema, and it provides instant relief, and seems to be clearing it up.

Other things that it can apparently cure are nappy rash, impetigo, most kinds of infections (can be ingested if it's an internal thing), and loads more, do some googling.

Anyway, felt like I had to share. I'm well chuffed that for 6 quid I have a product that seems to deal with a lot of common health problems, and it actually works (and fast)!

I got mine from Amazon. Three jars for £12.
I get the one that is odorless and tasteless used for cooking, so no bits of coconut floating about in it. I pull it through my curly hair after a shower, love it, and rub a bit on my dry eczema prove hands.

BrandNewAndImproved · 05/12/2015 12:17

That's the same one I buy timri.

MoriartyIsMyAngel · 05/12/2015 12:18

I was evangelical about coconut oil, I even ate spoonfuls of it, believing it to be excellent for thyroid health - eventually I had to stop ignoring the scratchy feeling at the back of my throat and the rash that would pop up on my neck five minutes later! But if you're not allergic to it, then yeah, it's great!

Timri · 05/12/2015 12:20

Ooh brandnew may have a little shop around in the Caribbean food shops then!

DoreenLethal · 05/12/2015 12:22

I've learnt about lots of new things by reading posts on here like the OP's. Don't reply if you know already! Or reply saying, 'yes, I agree-it's also useful for xyz'

I don't mind learning stuff, I do mind being 'urged' to do stuff that I've been doing for years. Urge overkill on here some days.

It has a SPF of around 10 so it can be used as a mild suntan lotion in not too bright sunlight.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 05/12/2015 12:23

Doreen Well you didn't need to post your snotty reply, ya knowHmm, just ignore it if it irritates you.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 05/12/2015 12:26

I bought some a couple of years ago and couldn't find one thing that it did work for. Made my skin spotty, dried my hair and skin on body out. Tasted like shit if I cooked with it.

Oh apart from pretending to my 3 yr old at the time it was magic cream if he fell over and hurt himself.

Timri · 05/12/2015 12:26

Ooh, you can also use it as a home made deodorant!

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 05/12/2015 12:26

Doreen - the urging was aimed at people who didn't already own a jar of coconut oil. I'm sure if you'd engaged your brain you could probably have worked that out for yourself though.

And toothpaste.

bimandbam · 05/12/2015 12:28

I need to get some. Apparently it i is very good on hairy ponies.

Is it any good on psoriasis? Dp isn't getting much relief from his steriod cream.

BertrandRussell · 05/12/2015 12:29

"Ooh, you can also use it as a home made deodorant!"

You could use an aubergine as a home made deodorant if you want to- it's not going to stop you smelling.......

Enjolrass · 05/12/2015 12:30

We use it for loads of stuff.

Dhs psoriasis, cuts, scrapes, in the bath, to make a body scrub. It sorted dds blackheads and the spots on my arms.

We cook somethings with it not all things. Some stuff doesn't go with it.

Not everyone likes it though, seems to make some peoples skin worse.

VulcanWoman · 05/12/2015 12:31

It's great isn't it. I use it as a moisturiser at the minute but have a recipe for toothpaste.

6 tablespoons coconut oil
6 tablespoons baking soda
25 drops of peppermint oil

whisk all together and store in glass jar with lid.

Enjolrass · 05/12/2015 12:31

Oh and for shaving!

PurpleDaisies · 05/12/2015 12:32

It has a SPF of around 10 so it can be used as a mild suntan lotion in not too bright sunlight.

If you want protection against uv rays that cause skin cancer you should use a proper sunscreen with an spf of 30. This thread is like bad science bingo.

VulcanWoman · 05/12/2015 12:35

I've used the Vita organic coconut oil.

Timri · 05/12/2015 12:37

Bertrand I've never tried it, so don't know, but I think you have to mix it with bicarb or something

bigbuttons · 05/12/2015 12:38

I always have tubs of the stuff, i get mine from coconoil, buy it bulk. Have on my toast in the morning and oil my scalp with it once a week. i can't stand using butter now.

Hopelass · 05/12/2015 12:38

I like it in the bath but like a pp it makes my eczema worse Confused
When I was suffering from tonsillitis I read it was good to gargle with so tried that and it was gone within 24 hours. Horrible experience though; hard not to gag!

bigbuttons · 05/12/2015 12:39

doreen you sound like an absolute delight.

DoreenLethal · 05/12/2015 12:42

Doreen - the urging was aimed at people who didn't already own a jar of coconut oil. I'm sure if you'd engaged your brain you could probably have worked that out for yourself though.

Well perhaps next time choose your words more carefully - by saying 'you all' it infers 'you all' rather than 'those that haven't discovered it yet'. Perhaps engaging your brain might help you put across your point?

limitedperiodonly · 05/12/2015 12:44

If we're recommending superfoods, can I nominate Aunt Bessie's Dumpling Mix?

I don't know how good it is for relieving irritations - genital or otherwise - but in a stew it's beyond compare.

BertrandRussell · 05/12/2015 12:44

As usual when these crazes appear, I wonder which particular bit of Big Business has a lot of coconut oil it wants to get rid of. Then I wonder what the craze is doing to the lives of farmers in the countries that grow coconuts.

Cynical? Moi?
