What is it about people being offended these days. Another thread on here says that someone was offended because someone else called their parents idiots. Someone is offended because of a jumper that says OCD -Obsessive Christmas Disorder and wants it banned. Christians are offended at this and Muslims at that so they should be banned.

Whatever happened to being allowed an opinion. Or being funny. It seems that the "I'm offended" brigade only exist because there are idiots out there that will listen to them and pander to their needs.

I am not saying that people should be allowed to be abusive or incite harts but there needs to be some common sense applied.

Well my best friend's life has been crippled by OCD so I wouldn't find a jumper making light of it funny at all. I wouldn't ban it but I would question the sense of humour of the wearer.

Agreed. People take other people's opinions far too personally and see them as a judgement on their own choices, so immediately get defensive. If you're not spouting hate speech, you're entitled to your opinion. Wanting to shut others down for it is ridiculous.

When you've seen your child so consumed by OCD that he wants to commit suicide you too would be offended by that jumper.

I don't think those are funny. It's up to them to use language or wear messaged jumper or whatever, but I would question their intelligence.

One of a mum in my ds's reception class used to wear jacket which said "slut" on the back. I was worried if my ds might ask me what that means.(He was a good reader)

My ds couldn't even drink water or eat because the OCD made him believe he would be contaminated. It's really not something to make fun of.

I have a close friend who has attempted suicide several times because of her OCD and she finds it hilarious.

You chose what you are offended by.

Can't say I find the jumper funny but hardly offensive.

I do think it's a tiny minority that are professionally offended, a close relative is like this but she's a massive pain in the arse and we take no notice of her.

OP, so if my young son saw the jumper and was upset by it that wouldn't bother you at all?

I do think some people just LOVE to be offended. I'm not sure when it became an expectation to go through life and everything would always be sunshine, ice cream and bunny rabbits. I find it much easier to just dismiss stuff that might offend me - possibly mentally file the speaker under 'TWATS' - and then move on. I don't think I'd ever tell someone they'd offended me. If something offends you just discard it and move on. There's quite enough other shit to be getting on with!

Ok. Christians wanting abortions banned. Muslims wanting cartoons that contain Mohammed banned? Are they good enough?

Also, The difference is that your friend is presumably an adult. Maternity brings the ability to deal with things better. A child hasn't yet developed those coping mechanisms.

I have diagnosed OCD since a child. I would buy the jumper and wear it. I can take the piss out of the ridiculous condition that I have. Its taking the piss out of our obsession with Christmas not the fact I have to check every appliance before I leave the house.

Unfortunately there is potential in absolutely everything that could offend/upset/trigger/traumatise/whatever anyone.

eg - DS was attacked* by a dog once and became terrified of all things doggy. Should jumpers with dogs on have been banned?

*Jumped on - but he was little and the dog was big and it was awful for him.

Offence is increasingly taken to any instance where someone is in disagreement with or takes a different view from the offended. That used to be defined as bigotry.

Pepper. I am sorry your child would feel like like. If it were my child I would say that it is a play on words and some people find a play on words funny. I would tell them that it was not meant as a personal joke and that they shouldn't get upset about it.

As I said, a friend that has tried to kill herself several times because of her OCD finds the jumper hilarious. She thinks people that are offended by it have no sense of humour.

I do think that it is up to us as parents to ensure that our children are taught how to deal with things that upset them. It's how they grow and build their coping mechanisms. I thinking banning things so they don't have to cope with them is helpful in the long run.

But I'm talking about a child OP. When OCD is really bad telling them not to be upset by it doesn't really work. with OCD they can't control the negative thoughts. It's like telling someone with depression to snap out of it. It just doesn't work.

That you can't even see that it could be upsetting for a child makes me question your intelligence.

OP, I don't think you really understand OCD at all. Knowing someone who has it doesn't mean you really understand.
